  • Patent number: 7835006
Abstract: The present invention relates to a new fluorescence detection platform based on the integration of grating-assisted surface plasmon coupled emission (GASPCE). This innovation builds upon the traditional SPCE technique by adding a grating to the metal surface which thereby provides additional emission confinement. The original conical emission pattern associated with the traditional SPCE technique is “squeezed” into a “two-beam” emission pattern that is more readily interrogated and collected by a waveguiding structure. With the GASPCE method and system of the present invention, a fluorescence emission can be coupled into optical waveguide with greater efficiency. As such, the integration of the GASPCE and existing optical fiber networking offers distributed real-time sensing capabilities. Also, the integration with an integrated optical chip may enable multi-channel array sensing or high-throughput florescence sensing.

  • Patent number: 7811783
Abstract: A rapid method for detecting spoilage of a food sample, particularly a fish sample, by detecting and enumerating sulfide-producing bacteria (SPB). A growth medium containing iron and sulfur is combined with the food sample forming an incubation mixture which is incubated for a period of time. In one embodiment, a plurality of fluorescence measurements are taken during an incubation period of about 3 hours to 17 hours at 30° C. SPB are determined to be present in the sample if the fluorescence measurement initially increases and then decreases to form a fluorescence maximum (peak). The time to detection of the fluorescence peak can be used with a correlation schedule to enumerate the SPB in the food sample. In another embodiment, a visual test can also be used to identify color changes in the incubation mixture to provide a semi-quantitative enumeration of SPB effective after about 3 hours to 17 hours of incubation.

  • Patent number: 7807644
Abstract: Chimeric proteins comprising soluble Tissue Factor (sTF) and another subunit (e.g., annexin V) are described. The proteins promote blood clotting and/or inhibit cancer by targeting sTF to specific receptors such as phosphatidylserine (PS) on activated cells. These chimeric proteins are useful in treating patients with excessive bleeding due to inborn problems, drug therapy, trauma or surgery and/or as an anti-cancer therapy, for example by causing blood vessels feeding cancers to become clotted, thereby preventing adequate flow of blood to a tumor, which in turn will lead to tumor inhibition and death or may be used in a therapy to cause clotting within blood vessels that pose a threat in the subject in non-cancerous conditions.

  • Patent number: 7794726
Abstract: The present invention is directed to mutants of lysine decarboxylase, nucleic acids encoding the mutants, and vaccines comprising the mutants for inhibiting and reducing the development of periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. The vaccine composition comprises a recombinant lysine decarboxylase mutant which is based on a native version of the enzyme from E. corrodens and induces production of antibodies that inhibit the activity of the lysine decarboxylase enzyme in the oral cavity. The recombinant lysine decarboxylase mutant, in one version, comprises a mutation at residue 365 or at other locations within the active site, and in a preferred embodiment is produced from E. coli in large amounts and to form inclusion bodies. The purified inclusion bodies can then be used in the vaccine composition to induce in vivo production of antibodies that inhibit the activity of native E. corrodens lysine decarboxylase.
