  • Patent number: 6415231
Abstract: The present invention relates in general to a method and apparatus for planning a pressure survey, and in particular, a method and apparatus for using a pressure survey tool so that the user may predict in advance the number of pressure tests needed to be performed in a pressure survey such that the results fall within a desired standard deviation of the pressure gradient. The present invention further relates in general to a method and apparatus for performing a pressure survey, and in particular, a process of measuring pressure gradient and standard deviation thereof for downhole fluid bearing formations using information collected from pressure survey apparatus such that the requisite amount of information is collected to ensure the measurements actually received are within the desired standard deviation of the pressure gradient.

  • Patent number: 6399730
Abstract: A process for producing a substantially dry polymer particle powder. A mixture of polymerization reagents is formed from a mixture of at least one monomer source and a solvent selected from the group consisting essentially of water and organic solvents and an initiator source. The mixture of polymerization reagents is sprayed into a heated, controlled atmosphere, forming droplets of the mixture which are allowed to fall through the heated, controlled atmosphere for a sufficient period of time to obtain a desired degree of polymerization. The solvent is continuously evacuated from the atmosphere during the polymerization process.

  • Patent number: 6327753
Abstract: A clamp for securing wire rope or other flexible cord with a high retention force. The clamp of the present invention has an outer housing with a gripping surface therein for securing wire rope or other flexible cord placed therein against the opposing gripping surface of a traveling block, gripping force being applied by rotation of a threaded member in threaded engagement with outer housing. Wire rope or other flexible cord is thereby gripped with significant control over axial alignment and without compressing segments of wire rope or flexible cord together.

  • Patent number: 6289787
Abstract: The vane actuator according to the present invention is capable of operating effectively at a working pressure greater than 100 psig. The vane actuator comprises a vane shaft rotatably extending through a casing and a vane disposed within the casing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber therein. The casing includes stiffening members for resisting deflection of and maintaining an internal seal within the casing when exposed to a pressure of 150 psig. The stiffening member may be located in the range of about 10° and 20° on either side of a casing centerline to minimize deflection of the casing when exposed to a pressure force.

  • Patent number: 6183714
Abstract: This invention provides a method of making single-wall carbon nanotubes by laser vaporizing a mixture of carbon and one or more Group VIII transition metals. Single-wall carbon nanotubes preferentially form in the vapor and the one or more Group VIII transition metals catalyzed growth of the single-wall carbon nanotubes. In one embodiment of the invention, one or more single-wall carbon nanotubes are fixed in a high temperature zone so that the one or more Group VIII transition metals catalyze further growth of the single-wall carbon nanotube that is maintained in the high temperature zone. In another embodiment, two separate laser pulses are utilized with the second pulse timed to be absorbed by the vapor created by the first pulse.

  • Patent number: 5729905
Abstract: The invention pertains to an apparatus for measuring a foot's length and width to correspond to a shoe size and a method to eliminate multiplexers and demultiplexers in circuits. The apparatus is a low profile self-contained apparatus comprising a transducing medium, a microcontroller, a reference impedance element, a signal amplifier, an analog to digital conversion circuit, and a display to generate and display foot sizing data. A microcontroller unit ?is connected directly to the hybrid multiplexing circuit which! contains algorithms which solve a set of linear equations to indirectly determine the electronic image of a foot. The shoe size is then calculated using a sizing algorithm and then displayed on a display which is connected to the output of the microcontroller unit.
