    Abstract: A small size, flat panel, 1/6.sup.th wavelength antenna is provided. A flat copper-clad dielectric substrate is processed on a first flat side to produce a copper triangular or pseudo triangular-shaped radiating element having a linear copper feed line that extends from the triangle apex. The substrate is also processed on its opposite flat side to produce a rectangular-shaped first copper ground plane element that underlies at least a portion of the copper feed line, but does not underlie the copper radiating element. The first side of the substrate may also be processed to produce a second copper ground plane element that is out of physical engagement with both the copper feed line and the copper radiation element. Aligned through holes are formed in the first ground plane element and the substrate. The metal sheath of a coaxial cable connects to the copper ground plane member(s), and the cable center conductor penetrates the aligned through holes and connects to the copper feed line.

    Abstract: An antenna is formed from a single sheet of generally planar metal that is cut to provide four geometric antenna shapes that comprise a ground plane element, a two-section shorting element that is defined by two generally parallel fold lines, a radiating element, and an arm that has one end fixed to a generally central portion of the radiating element and has a free end that extends toward a fold line. Folding the metal sheet on the two fold lines positions the radiating element above the ground plane element. A transmit/receive coaxial cable is aligned with a gap that is formed between the two sections of the shorting element. The cable's outer metal sheath is connected to a metal tab, and the metal tab is secured to a surface of the ground plane element. The cable's center conductor is secured to a surface of the radiating element. A radome and its mounting tab complete the antenna assembly.

A channel (17) receives the binding edge in the middle of supporting surface and extends perpendicular to the supporting shaft thereby dividing the supporting surface into a first area and a second area. A first supporting frame (14) is pivotally supported on the supporting shaft over the first area. A first rotating shaft (25) is rotatably supported by the first supporting frame parallel with the supporting shaft. A first upper feeding roller (26, 27) is fixed on the first rotating shaft and forced to engage any page placed upon the first area. A second supporting frame (15) is pivotally supported on the supporting shaft over the second area.

    Abstract: In an electrostatic ink jet printer, all nozzles of a printhead are spaced generally the same distance from a moving paper print substrate. Three voltage levels are selectively applied to each nozzle of the printhead. As the paper moves past the printhead, a bias voltage Vb is applied to all nozzles which have a static protruding meniscus which shape is determined by a balance between the internal pressure, surface tension, and bias voltage. When the paper arrives at a print row, nonprinting nozzles have a shadow voltage pulse Vs, the "shadow pulse," applied thereto, and printing nozzles have a higher magnitude print pulse Vp applied thereto. The magnitude of the shadow pulse Vs causes an additional excursion of the ink meniscus to form at each non-printing nozzle. The higher magnitude of print pulse Vp causes an ink filament to move from a printing nozzle to the paper.

    Abstract: An optically addressed, optical relaying device placed between crossed polarizers utilizes an array of pixels made up of photodetectors, circuitry, and modulating pads, and an analog liquid crystal to modulate the intensity of an optical signal on a pixel by pixel basis. The photodetector generates a current proportional to the light detected. Once the current exceeds a certain level, the circuitry stores a charge on the modulating pad proportional to the photo-induced current. This stored charge rotates the molecules of the liquid crystal thereby rotating the polarization of the light signal. The output polarizer then attenuates the light beam according to the change in polarization.

    Abstract: A condition sensing apparatus/method includes a sensor-fiber-grating that is subjected to a physical condition or measurand (strain/temperature/pressure) that is to be sensed. A broad-band light beam is directed into the core of the sensor grating, and the constructive-interference light beam that is reflected from this sensor grating is directed into a reference-fiber-grating. The reference grating is subjected to a servo-controlled elongation force or strain, and in this manner the length of the reference grating is varied until the reference grating operates to reflect a maximum intensity of its received light beam, and to transmit a minimum intensity of its received light beam. This maximum/minimum condition of the reference grating is sensed by detecting the minimum intensity of a light beam that is transmitted through the reference grating. The physical strain of the reference grating at which this condition occurs is used as a measure of the measurand to which the sensor grating is subjected.

    Abstract: A plurality of lines are printed by the print head of a printer which is moved in a predetermined print direction on a sheet placed on a planar supporting surface wherein the sheet is fed perpendicular to the print direction. The print head is slidably mounted on a guide bar which is supported by a frame parallel to the sheet supporting surface so as to permit moving the lower end of the print head upwardly and downwardly relative to the support surface. The frame is biased in the downward direction normally. During non-print operation, a driving lever moves the frame upwardly to raise the print head to an initial position spaced above the support surface by a predetermined distance where it is maintained. During a print operation, the driving lever engages the frame to drive it upwardly or downwardly with the upward movement against the bias force.

    Abstract: A xerographic developer apparatus wherein the idler end of a hollow and rotatably mounted developer roller is resiliently supported for radial movement by a radially compliant hub. The hub comprises a unitary series of stainless coils that are wound about an axis of rotation of the developer roller. The series of wire coils include a first multi-turn end portion to physically engage the roller's idler end, an opposite multi-turn end portion to engage a bearing that is fixed in position to generally coincide with the roller's axis of rotation, and an intermediate multi-turn portion that is free of physical engagement with either of the roller's idler end or the bearing. The intermediate multi-turn portion resiliently support the roller's idler end for needed radial movement relative to the bearing.

    Abstract: A valve-automatic-pilot couples to electrovalves that control a watering cycle.The automatic-pilot includes a U-shaped magnetic circuit having two vertically spaced, parallel, and horizontally extending legs. The upper leg of the magnetic circuit carries a permanent magnet. An electrical coil is mounted between the two legs of the magnet circuit with a bottom of the coil abutting the lower leg of the magnetic circuit, with the top of the coil spaced from the top leg of the magnetic circuit, and with an open central axis of the coil extending vertically. A vertically movable retaining block is internal of the coil and is spring biased downward to a valve-closed position. When the block is in its valve-closed and first bistable position, a large air gap prevents the magnet from moving the block upward to its valve-open position. A momentary pulse of coil-current of one polarity moves the block upward to its valve-open and second bistable position.

A plurality of metal conductors may be provided on the ink exit side to facilitate nozzle control using signal-multiplexing techniques, or a field compensation electrode may be provided on the ink exit side.

    Abstract: A thin film of electroless plated nonmagnetic nickel/phosphor (Ni/P) forms at least the external cylindrical surface of a hollow magnetic brush roller. The plated nonmagnetic film or layer is deposited at least one the exterior cylindrical surface of a hollow, electrically conductive, metal, nonmagnetic, aluminum roller or nonmagnetic stainless steel roller. Alternatively, the plated film is deposited on both the external and internal surfaces of such a development roller that is formed of an electrically conductive and nonmagnetic plastic material. The plated film is electrically conductive and relatively transparent to the magnetic fields that are generated by stationary permanent magnets that are positioned inside of the hollow and rotatable magnetic brush roller. The roller is intended for use in xerographic copiers, printers, and the like. The invention is usable both in the new-build of magnetic brush developers and in the refurbishing/recycling of existing magnetic brush developers apparatus.

    Abstract: A system for increasing the depth of field and decreasing the wavelength sensitivity and the effects of misfocus-producing aberrations of the lens of an incoherent optical system incorporates a special purpose optical mask into the incoherent system. The optical mask has been designed to cause the optical transfer function to remain essentially constant within some range from the in-focus position. Signal processing of the resulting intermediate image undoes the optical transfer modifying effects of the mask, resulting in an in-focus image over an increased depth of field. Generally the mask is placed at a principal plane or the image of a principal plane of the optical system. Preferably, the mask modifies only phase and not amplitude of light. The mask may be used to increase the useful range of passive ranging systems.

In order to prevent interference between two CDs that reside closest to the binder rings when a user manually leaves through binder pages, the page includes a six-hole pattern, or a three-hole/three-notch pattern, that is configured to ensure that a vertical pivot line, or binder edge, on the page being turned moves past the vertical leading edge of the three rings, and then moves backward under the three rings.
