Patent number: 4406386Abstract: An article carrier for mounting on a substantially flat exterior surface of a motor vehicle and a bracket for the article carrier. The article carrier has two slats secured to the surface in a spaced apart, parallel relationship. One bracket is removably fastened to each of the slats. A movable fastening member depending from each bracket selectively secures the bracket in a fixed position along the corresponding slat. The article carrier also includes a transverse rail fastened at each of its end to one of the brackets.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1981Date of Patent: September 27, 1983Assignee: Masco CorporationInventors: William Rasor, Gary M. Cronce

Patent number: 4395303Abstract: A method of manufacturing metallic objects having thin walls and comprised of corrosion resistant materials. The method has the consecutive steps of forming a workpiece in the shape of the desired end product from a metal having a low resistance to an etchant, forming within a surface of the workpiece a metallic alloy case resistant to the etchant and etching the workpiece with the etchant.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1981Date of Patent: July 26, 1983Assignee: Masco CorporationInventor: Charles R. Patent number: 4171005Abstract: A diverter tub spout for use in a bathtub installation including a shower head interconnected to a common source of water. A floating valve member is positioned within the spout water passage and is responsive to water pressure to abut a valve seat to close the passage. A valve control member capable of holding the valve member remote from the seat to permit water flow is held in the flow position by a manually operable stem in a manner that positively allows water flow regardless of the magnitude of water pressure. The stem easily may be positioned to allow the floating valve to close, diverting water from the spout to the shower head, but upon the water pressure dropping below a predetermined level, the tub spout parts will automatically return to their flow positions.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1978Date of Patent: October 16, 1979Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventor: James R. Patent number: 4165885Abstract: A device for controlling sway of a towed vehicle having a trailer tongue member connected to the trailer hitch member of a towing vehicle. A bar universally pivotally connected to one of the members extends through a brake assembly mounted to the other of the members for pivotal movement relative thereto about only a single axis. Within the brake assembly, the bar is contacted by friction surfaces while being permitted to move in directions parallel to the pivot axis of the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1978Date of Patent: August 28, 1979Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventors: Arthur L. Good, Philip K. Hoopes, Jr.

Patent number: 4089347Abstract: Anti-scald apparatus for inclusion on a water mixing valve of the type commonly used in showers. The apparatus permits normal manual operation of the valve from an off position, through intermediate positions that allow mixtures of various proportions of hot and cold water to pass through the valve and toward the maximum temperature hot water position. However, the valve cannot be adjusted to reach this maximum temperature position without the performance of a positive, manual procedure by the valve operator, thereby reducing the possibility of accidental or inadvertent scalding. Stop means carried by the valve operating handle and easily accessible to the valve operator cooperate with a fixed stop on the valve to preclude valve adjustment beyond a predetermined high temperature setting until the stop means manually are disengaged.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1976Date of Patent: May 16, 1978Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventor: Christ Christo

Patent number: 4043359Abstract: A water faucet of the type having an arcuate valve member movable between positions interconnecting a source of water and a faucet discharge and a position isolating the water source of the faucet discharge. The valve member is positioned in a valve body that includes stop means capable of bearing against the valve member to limit valve member movement between useful positions. The valve member is formed from plastic material that easily may be molded into a desired shape and includes a recess that partially receives the stop member. The periphery of the recess is lined with material having much greater hardness and resistance to wear than the plastic material of the valve member itself. The valve is molded into two mating parts with a portion of the recess included in each part. The relatively hard material is in the form of an insert that is mounted in grooves in each of the parts of the valve member and has an aperture into which extends the stop member.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1976Date of Patent: August 23, 1977Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventor: Christ Christo

Patent number: 4033373Abstract: A valve for a single handle water faucet which includes a housing having a central chamber open at one of its ends. Hot and cold water input passages are formed in the housing and are connectable to pressurized sources of hot and cold water, respectively. Each of the input passages communicates with the housing chamber through openings in a wall thereof. A water discharge passage is formed in the housing and leads from the housing chamber to exterior of the valve. A valve cartridge subassembly is provided that is capable of insertion and removal from the housing as a unit to facilitate assembly, maintenance and repair. This subassembly carries first valve means that control water input to the housing chamber and second valve means that control the flow of water through the discharge passage. Both valve means are connected for integral movement with a manual operating handle that extends through the valve casing to exterior of the valve.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1976Date of Patent: July 5, 1977Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventors: Alex Manoogian, Eric V. Patent number: 4030647Abstract: An auto accessory rack adapted to be mounted on the rear deck, roof or other vehicle outer surface. The rack includes a generally rectangular frame from which extend, at the corners of the frame, shafts ending in convex ball portions. These ball portions are received by socket members in a snap-in relationship to form a ball and socket universal joint. The socket members, formed from non-metallic, resiliently deformable material, include a base portion adapted to rest on the vehicle outer surface. Outer brackets overlie the socket members and engage the ball portions to retain them in the socket members. Fasteners secure the outer bracket and socket members to the vehicle outer surface with the socket member bases insulating the brackets from the vehicle surface and providing a weathertight seal between the rack and the vehicle surface.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1975Date of Patent: June 21, 1977Assignee: Masco CorporationInventors: William A. Rasor, Walter S. Van Dine, Frank A. Whitney

Patent number: 3964514Abstract: A single handle hot and cold water mixing and flow control faucet valve of the type wherein the operating handle is reciprocally movable along its own axis to vary flow volume passing through the valve and rotatable about its own axis to vary the proportions of hot and cold water passing through the valve. Stop means are provided on the valve body and operating handle to prevent axial movement of the handle to and from the off position unless the handle is in a cold water only rotational position and to prevent rotation of the handle in one direction from this position. Additional adjustable stop means may be provided to limit the extent of possible rotational movement from a cold water only position towards a hot water only position.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1974Date of Patent: June 22, 1976Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventors: Alex Manoogian, Eric V. Pullen

Patent number: 3951499Abstract: An assembly for mounting an electric lamp bulb of the type adapted to mate with a bayonet coupling. The assembly includes a one-piece housing of insulating material that completely surrounds a portion of the bulb base. For insulation of the bulb from vibration and to reduce the likelihood of corrosion, metal to metal contact involving the bulb is minimized. A biasing force provided by the resilient deformation of the housing material is used to provide electrical contact between an electrical lead and a bulb base terminal despite the fact that the housing material is semi-rigid.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1974Date of Patent: April 20, 1976Assignee: Rupert Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Kenneth C.
