Abstract: A method of reducing an immune response to a transplant in a recipient by treating said recipient with an amount of mesenchymal stem cells effective to reduce or inhibit host rejection of the transplant. The mesenchymal stem cells can be administered before, at the same time as, or after the transplant. Also disclosed is a method of inducing a reduced immune response against a host by foreign tissue, i.e., graft versus host disease, by treatment with mesenchymal stem cells.

Abstract: Transgenic swine in which the normal expression of .alpha.(1,3) galactosyltransferase is prevented in at least one organ of tissue type. The absence or inactivation of this enzyme prevents the production of carbohydrate moieties having the distinctive terminal Gal.alpha.1-3Gal.beta.1-4GlcNAc epitope that is a significant factor in xenogeneic, particularly human, transplant rejection of swine grafts.
Abstract: A human C5a receptor polypeptide and DNA (RNA) encoding such polypeptide and a procedure for producing such polypeptide by recombinant techniques is disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for utilizing such polypeptide for identifying antagonists and agonists to such polypeptide. Antagonists and agonists may be used therapeutically to inhibit or stimulate the C5a receptor. Also disclosed are diagnostic methods for detecting mutations in the polynucleotides of the present invention and for detecting levels of the soluble polypeptides in samples derived from a host.
Abstract: Vectors and vector systems are embodied that include a gene encoding a tumor suppressor protein. In one embodiment, the vector includes a gene encoding a tumor suppressor protein and an inducible promoter controlling the gene encoding a tumor suppressor protein. The tumor suppressor protein may be p53 protein. In another embodiment, there is provided a vector system which comprises a first vector including a gene encoding a tumor suppressor protein, and a second vector containing a nucleic acid sequence encoding an antisense sequence complementary to all or a portion of the gene encoding a tumor suppressor protein. In yet another embodiment, there is provided a vector system which comprises a first vector including a gene encoding a tumor suppressor protein, and a second vector containing a gene which encodes a protein which binds to, and thereby inhibits, the tumor suppressor protein.

Abstract: There is disclosed an improved wheel housing assembly comprised of a wheel, a wheel axle and an axle housing wherein the wheel axle is formed of wheel and housing shaft portions with the axis of the wheel shaft portion being parallel to and slightly displaced or offset from the axis of the housing shaft portion whereby rotation of the housing shaft portion within a housing member permits the wheel shaft portion to be rotated about the axis of the housing shaft portion thereby to permit elevational adjustment of the wheel of the wheel assembly with respect to the horizontal.
Abstract: There is disclosed a novel apparatus and process for nesting a plurality of drum bodies or shells of deformable material wherein a cylindrically-shaped drum body is subjected to a force in a plane substantially parallel to the axis of the drum body to deform the drum body to the extent necessary to permit the positioning of a second drum body about the initially deformed drum body whereupon the deforming procedure is repeated for the nested first and second drum bodies, and is thereafter again repeated until a desired number of drum shells are contained in the resulting nested assemblage of drum bodies or shells.
Abstract: The shaft of a wind turbine is connected to the rotor of a three-phase AC generator. The rotor windings, in turn, are connected to the rotor windings of a DC-energized, AC exciter via a differential frequency-converter. A frequency-detector, which monitors the output of the AC generator, is connected to the input of the frequency-converter to maintain the output of the generator at 60 Hz. A "real" power sensing circuit, connected to the output of the generator, develops a control signal which, when subtracted from a second control signal generated by a power management control circuit, maintains the power output of the generator at the maximum possible level for each particular power output from the wind turbine which drives the generator.
Abstract: There is disclosed a process for producing a novel polymer composition comprised of a polyacrylonitrile polymer and a block copolymer with acrylonitrile and non-crystalline polymer sequences wherein the polymer composition is formed by the removal of a solvent from a solution of a polyacrylonitrile polymer and a block copolymer with acrylonitrile and non-crystalline polymer sequences.
Abstract: There is disclosed a manifold assembly for a rotary solvent extractor formed of an elongated fluid distribution trough or conduit divided into a plurality of fluid distribution subsections by intermediate gate members wherein each fluid distribution subsection is in fluid communication with a fluid supply conduit. A deflector plate is disposed therebelow beneath a manifold assembly to permit for the adjustment of the angle of fluid discharge.
