Abstract: Containers or pods for photographic processing material, having strong seals along certain edge areas, and relatively weaker seals along other edge areas. The weaker seals are designed to open and distribute material over a sheet of film and/or paper when pressure is applied within a camera. The weak seal material is a thermoplastic crosslinked homopolymer of a norbornene compound having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a monovalent aliphatic group of from 1 to 4 carbons, and a phenyl group, R" is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom and a monovalent aliphatic group of from 1 to 2 carbons, and n is 0 to 3. Seals made with these homopolymers are highly resistant to the dissolving action of aromatic alcohols such as benzyl alcohol.
Abstract: Pods for holding photographic solutions have strong edge seal areas and relatively weaker edge seal areas which are designed to break open when pressure is applied to the pod for releasing a photographic solution onto a sheet of paper or film. The weak seal is formed by applying a strip along an edge of a thermoplastic material which is a crosslinked homopolymer or copolymer of 2-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate. The homopolymer can be crosslinked by heat, or by the action of formaldehyde, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde, or ethylene diamine. The 2-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate also can be copolymerized with a 2-norbornylmethyl ester of methacrylic acid and then crosslinked.
Abstract: A method for making o- and p- halomethyl styrenes which comprises reacting an ethyl benzene, paraformaldehyde and hydrogen halide, treating the reaction product with a halogen, and dehydrohalogenating the resulting o- and p- halomethyl (1-haloethyl) benzenes at an elevated temperature using as dehydrohalogenating agent an amine acceptor of the generic formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN R is an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, n is an integer having a value of from 1 to 5, and at least one alkyl group is attached to a carbon atom adjacent to the nitrogen atom and when n is more than 1, the alkyl groups may be the same or different groups, and recovering a mixture of o- and p- halomethyl styrenes.
Abstract: A combination of improved coatability of a coating composition onto an anionic surfactant-containing contiguous layer of a radiation-sensitive or non-radiation sensitive film element, plus better control of static electricity on the resulting coated film element, especially on a radiation sensitive photographic element, results from using a coating composition containing a surfactant mixture of (a) a certain type of cationic perfluorinated alkyl surfactant, such as perfluorooctylsulfonamido-(N-propyl-3-N,N,N-trimethyl) ammonium iodide, with (b) a certain type of nonionic alkylphenoxypoly(propylene oxide) surfactant, such as para-isononylphenoxy decaglycidol, as a coating aid in the application of fluid coatings, preferably by simultaneous coating techniques, to form multiple layers in an element during the making of the element. The presence of a hydrophilic polymeric binder, such as gelatin, in the coating composition is desirable.
