Patent number: 7631853Abstract: A hand tool includes an elongated plunger assembly and a locking assembly. The locking assembly has a catch assembly with a release actuator. The release actuator is movable in a direction generally not aligned with the tool head plane of motion. The locking assembly catch member is structured to engage the plunger assembly body and maintain the plunger assembly body in a selected position. Further, the plunger assembly is disposed in a socket within the tool head and biased toward an extended position by a spring. The release actuator is, preferably, disposed on the neck of the hand tool just above the user's thumb. When the plunger assembly body is disposed within the tool head and a user desires to extend the plunger assembly, the user actuates the release actuator thereby removing the engagement of the catch member and allowing the socket spring to move the plunger assembly body to the extended position.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2007Date of Patent: December 15, 2009Assignee: Penn United Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark P. Patent number: 7603511Abstract: A method of ensuring that data sent to a handheld wireless communications device is written to non-volatile memory is disclosed. In a device, where data is initially written to a first volatile memory and then written to a second volatile memory before being written from the second volatile memory to a non-volatile memory, software code is implemented that causes the writing of the data to non-volatile memory concurrently with the writing of the data to the second volatile memory. The software code may incorporate operating system commands (such as Windows OS).Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2005Date of Patent: October 13, 2009Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Mike Rybak, Jeff Lejeune, Rodney Bylsma, Rob Oliver

Patent number: 7199883Abstract: A system determines the position of a vehicle moving responsive to an inverter having a 360 degree electrical cycle. The system includes a guideway comprising a linear synchronous motor excited by the inverter, a MAGLEV adapted to move with respect to the guideway and the linear synchronous motor, and a reflective pattern disposed along the guideway. A laser light source is coupled to the MAGLEV and directs light toward the pattern. A light sensor is coupled to the MAGLEV and senses the light from the light source which is reflected from the pattern. The light sensor outputs a plurality of pulses corresponding to movement of the MAGLEV with respect to the pattern. A modulator, radio transmitter, radio receiver, demodulator and wayside processor cooperate with the light sensor. The processor determines the position of the MAGLEV by accumulating the pulses. The position corresponds to the 360 degree electrical cycle.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2005Date of Patent: April 3, 2007Assignee: Union Switch & Signal, Inc.Inventor: Joseph W. Schaad

Patent number: 5857320Abstract: A combustor with a flashback arresting system for producing a hot gas by burning premixed fuel and compressed air having fuel/air premixing passages, each of the passages having an inlet end and a discharge end. Disposed immediately upstream of the inlet ends of the fuel/air premixing passages is a fuel manifold for delivering fuel to the passages. Fuel lines with fuel flow control valves connect the fuel manifold with a fuel supply. The flashback arresting system has one or more optical flame detectors with a light receiving portion located upstream of the discharge ends of the fuel/air premixing passages and oriented toward at least a portion of at least one of the fuel/air passages. The flame detectors are responsive to receiving light from a flashback by its light receiving portion by transmitting an output signal to a control system. The control system controls the fuel flow control valves and responds to the output signal by adjusting the fuel flow control valves to eliminate the flashback.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1996Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventors: David Joseph Amos, Donald Maurice Newburry, Richard Hobert Bunce

Patent number: 5678233Abstract: The present invention discloses a method of creating a monolithic wasteform consisting of a binder which chemically immobilizes heavy metals and radioactive materials so as to render them environmentally safe. An apatite or apatite-like material may be employed in immobilizing the hazardous material. A preferred practice of the invention employs a hydroxyapatite or a calcium depleted hydroxyapatite into which the waste materials are substituted and immobilized. The stoichiometric apatite or calcium deficient hydroxyapatite may be formed in the aqueous solution containing heavy metals or radioactive materials, or both, wherein binding of the latter is effected. Alternatively, a preformed calcium deficient phosphate may be introduced into the solution having heavy metals or radioactive materials, or both, dissolved therein in effecting the desired binding in situ. A high strength monolithic wasteform which may be stored or buried for long-term, safe storage of the hazardous materials is produced.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1994Date of Patent: October 14, 1997Inventor: Paul W.
