  • Patent number: 7019448
Abstract: A spark plug center wire assembly that includes a noise suppressing conductive seal with improved isolation of the seal from the heat generated at the firing end of the spark plug. The center wire assembly includes a firing electrode, a conductive glass seal, an intermediate electrode, the noise suppressing glass seal, and a terminal electrode. By locating the firing electrode, conductive seal and intermediate electrode between the noise suppressing seal and the spark gap, the center wire assembly is able to utilize the noise suppression attributes of the suppressive seal, while distancing the seal from the high temperatures created during the combustion process. A method of manufacturing the same is also disclosed in which the two glass seals are formed by sequential firing operations.

  • Patent number: 7011560
Abstract: A ground electrode for a spark plug has a through hole located adjacent a firing end of the electrode, with a precious metal firing tip extending through the hole. The firing tip is compressed axially to define a bulging portion extending radially outwardly from its longitudinal axis to mechanically retain the firing tip within the through hole. The firing tip additionally has an enlarged head or otherwise expanded portion at each axial end of the tip to provide a second mechanical interlock of the tip to the ground electrode. The firing tip can then also be welded to further strengthen its connection to the ground electrode. A method of manufacturing the ground electrode and a spark plug containing the ground electrode is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6623089
Abstract: A method for estimating the yaw rate of a vehicle. The method includes receiving at least one signal indicative of a vehicular lateral acceleration and receiving at least one signal indicative of a vehicular wheel velocity. A plurality of yaw rate estimation functions are provided. A first yaw rate estimation function of the plurality of yaw rate estimation functions is selected in response to at least one of the received signals. A first estimated yaw rate is estimated in accordance with the selected first yaw rate estimation function and at least two signals each indicative of a wheel velocity. If the first estimated yaw rate is not within a threshold value of an actual measured yaw rate, a second yaw rate estimation function is selected to obtain a second estimated yaw rate using a signal indicative of lateral acceleration for correlation with the actual measured yaw rate.

  • Patent number: 6612198
Abstract: A power system including a cable drive for adjusting a steering column of an automotive vehicle in response to rotation of a jack screw. A cable transmits torque from a motor-driven output shaft to the jack screw. The cable has terminal portions received in sockets in the output shaft and in the jack screw. The terminal portions and the sockets are square in cross section. An end part of each terminal portion is twisted to cause comers of the terminal portion to interfere with corners of the socket into which it extends to provide substantially a lash-free connection between the terminal portions of the cable and the sockets.

  • Patent number: 6598695
Abstract: A drive-by wire steering system is provided. The steering system comprises a steering shaft and a stop mechanism. The steering shaft is configured for a first angular displacement about a first axis. The steering shaft comprises a first geared portion and a first end. The first end is connectable to a vehicle's steering wheel. The stop mechanism comprises a stop portion and a second geared portion. The stop portion defines a first position and a second position. The first geared portion and the second geared portion are operatively engaged such that angular displacement of the steering shaft imparts a second angular displacement about a second axis to the stop mechanism. The first angular displacement is limited when the second angular displacement is such that the steering shaft abuts the stop portion at either the first position or the second position.

  • Patent number: 6598393
Abstract: A system for steering the wheels of a vehicle. The system includes a steering gear provided with a steering rack reciprocable in a power cylinder. A steering shaft has a pinion meshing with the steering rack. A hydraulic fluid system assists the reciprocation of the steering rack. The hydraulic fluid system includes a power piston reciprocable in the power cylinder. A control valve directs hydraulic fluid from a pump to the power cylinder at one side or the other of the piston, depending on the direction of rotation of the steering shaft. A lock valve is operable when closed to lock the rack against reciprocation to prevent steering of the wheels by preventing fluid flow in the hydraulic fluid system. The lock valve is controlled by a solenoid-operated electronic controller.
