  • Patent number: 5106096
Abstract: A golf ball has dimples formed on its surface which are in a pattern covering the entire surface and which has square dimples and round dimples which are interspersed with each other in a generally uniform manner. This end result is achieved by arranging most of the dimples in circles which run around the ball and with alternate round and square dimples. A first group of the circles run parallel to each other and a second group of the circles run parallel to each other with the circles of the first group being substantially perpendicular to those of the second group. So as to completely cover the surface of the ball with dimples, the uniform alternate round and square dimple pattern is necessarily interrupted at several places. About 432 dimples are placed on the surface of the ball for optimum aerodynamic effect.

  • Patent number: 5094124
Abstract: Handlebars for a stationary exercise bicycle are mounted on the front post or main body of the bicycle for pivotal adjustment and fixed positioning in a selected pivotal position relative thereto. Such handlebars have a central bar member which is connected to the post and a first larger handlebar section and a second smaller handlebar section which sections are positioned on opposite sides of the central bar member. The first larger handlebar section is in the form of a loop, the ends of which are attached to the ends of the central bar member, this larger handlebar section having a recessed portion positioned directly opposite the central bar member. The second smaller handlebar section is also in the form of a loop the ends of which are attached to the ends of the central bar member and the ends of the larger section. The smaller handlebar section has two substantially straight sides which are interconnected by a third side which is positioned directly opposite the central bar member.

  • Patent number: 5037085
Abstract: A pair of plates are interconnected by an adjustable post assembly such that the plates are in substantially parallel opposing relationship. The post assembly is constructed so that the two plates can be adjusted both pivotally and vertically relative to each other and then fixed in a desired position. The device is utilized by a person wishing stretching and/or adjustment of the lumbar and thoracic spines. Such person lies on his or her side with the uppermost knee wrapped around the post assembly and the thighs between the two plates. The upper plate is then rotated until it is directly above the upper thigh and then lowered until it presses against such thigh, using the lowermost hand, i.e. the hand closest to the table or floor on which the person is lying. With the thighs and legs fixed relative to each other, the upper torso is twisted towards the floor or table, thereby stretching and/or adjusting the lumbar and thoracic spines.

  • Patent number: 5036733
Abstract: A co-aptive surgical instrument has a pair of opposite facing co-aptive surfaces for grasping tissue. The co-aptive surfaces are formed with a matrix layer which is preferably of a metal such as nickel with a plurality of hard crystalline particles which are preferably a diamond grit which is captured in the matrix. To insure sufficient capture of the particles in the matrix so as to avoid loss of particles while at the same time providing the maximum possible protrusion of the particles and maximum coverage of the surface by such particles, the particles are oriented in juxtaposition to evenly cover the surface and the matrix is made to have a depth which is at least fifty percent of the average diameter of the particles.

  • Patent number: 5036332
Abstract: A monopulse antenna feed system utilizing multiple modes within the feed. A TEM mode and two TE.degree..sub.11 modes that are orthogonal and in phase quadrature are utilized in the antenna feed system to provide tracking information and data communication from a far-field source of circularly polarized radiation. The output from a port that is responsive to the TEM mode is compared with the output from a port that is responsive to the TE.degree..sub.11 modes to obtain tracking information and the output from the latter port also provides a channel for communication of data. The phase of the TEM mode relative to the phase of the TE.degree..sub.11 modes is indicative of the angular rotational position of a far-field source relative to the axis of the feed system and the relative amplitude of the TEM mode is indicative of the angular displacement of the far-field source away from the axis of the feed system.

  • Patent number: 5031917
Abstract: A Chess game has eight similar conventional 64 square chess boards. The boards can be stacked vertically, one above the other or can be laid out flat, one adjacent to the other. One set of chessmen is initially arranged in normal fashion on one side of the topmost board while the other set of chessman is arranged in normal fashion on the lowermost board on the side thereof opposite to that one which the first set is arranged. A second row of pawns is provided for each set, one of which is arranged in the first row of the board directly below the topmost board and the other of which is arranged in the first row of the board directly above the lowermost board. The pieces are moved as in a regular game of chess except that moves can be made both vertically and horizontally with the proviso that a piece cannot be moved both fore or aft and up or down in the same move.

  • Patent number: 5032847
Abstract: A pair of reflector "skins" which are typically thin metal sheets of the order of five feet by eight feet are placed side by side on the bed of a fixture, this bed having a predetermined size and a contour which is typically parabolic. Longitudinal rib members having a "Z" cross section and the same contour as the bed are placed in the fixture on top of the sheets in spaced relationship to each other and running along the longitudinal extent of the sheets. These ribs are secured in position by means of clamps which press the ribs securely against the sheets so that the entire surfaces thereof are held in mating engagement with the fixture bed so that they assume the contour thereof. The ends of the "Z" cross section ribs are secured to each other by means of gussets and clips. The runners of the ribs which abut against the sheets have a series of small holes spaced therealong.

  • Patent number: 5030034
Abstract: A pair of spaced walls which may be formed from corrugated metal sheets are joined together with a bottom plate being attached to the edges of the walls to form a box-like structure. A drive shoe formed by a pair of plates may be attached to the bottom of the structure. A sonic oscillator is attached to the top edges of the structure and sonic energy, preferably at a frequency which causes resonant standing wave vibration of the box-like structure, is applied to such structure so as to drive it into the ground. Successive sections of similar box-like structures are driven into the ground in end to end overlapping relationship to form an elongated box structure installed in the soil. This structure is employed to provide a barrier against the migration of soil pollutants. Further, soil samples can be taken from the area contained by the box-like structure to evaluate the effectiveness of the barrier provided by the first wall.

  • Patent number: 5014962
Abstract: Tubing through which fluid flow is to be regulated is placed in a regulating clamp wherein it is clamped between a roller wheel and a surface which is substantially parallel to the travel of the wheel. The surface has a variable cross-sectional area channel extending within or therealong. Flow rate through the tubing is changed by longitudinal adjustment of the position of the roller wheel, the ratio between the portion of the tubing which is clamped shut to that which is exposed to the channel, and consequently not being clamped, thereby being varied. A plurality of raised elements are formed in the surface and act to locally pinch or grip the tubing at discrete intervals thereby both improving the grip and lessening the creep of the tubing. The raised element which is most remote from the channel is substantially higher than the raised element closer to the channel to provide a more constant flow rate especially with thicker and harder walled tubing.

  • Patent number: 5005833
Abstract: A wrist band is provided for each of the user's wrists, such wrist bands being removably attachable to the wrists by wrapping therearound and securing in place by a fastening device such as a Velcro fastener. Each band has a looped thong extended therefrom in the direction of the user's fingers, the user's middle finger fitting through the thong such that palmar flexion of the hand is restricted. The wrist bands are joined together by a strap which is attached to the bands in the region of the user's thumbs. The user's wrists are thus joined together so that in preparing for and in making a tennis stroke, the arms move together so as to facilitate the training of a player to turn the shoulders and twist the body. A single one of the wrist bands can also be used on the hand used for making the toss in serving to train the player to toss the ball straight up or on the racquet holding hand to train the player to avoid palmar flexion while driving the ball.
