  • Patent number: 5591150
Abstract: An absorbent article, such as a sanitary napkin having a body-conforming portion or component that is capable of continuously adusting is provided. The body-conforming component, in one embodiment, is in the form of a resilient insert which has multiple arcuate portions in use. The insert has a central arcuate portion that provides the sanitary napkin with a convex upward shape in use and a pair of lateral arcuate portions that form barriers to the flow of liquid exudates. The multiple arcuate portions can either be pre-formed into the insert, or the insert can be provided in the form of a relatively flat piece that is provided with areas of different stiffness that form arcuate portions during use.

  • Patent number: 5569228
Abstract: Disclosed is a sanitary napkin and releasable wrapper package. The releasable wrapper is folded about the longitudinal side margins of the sanitary napkin in a C-fold so that both faces of the sanitary napkin are protected and a relatively smaller package is produced than if the releasable wrapper extends laterally beyond the longitudinal side margins of the sanitary napkin. The releasable wrapper and sanitary napkin may be trifolded about spaced-apart, laterally oriented fold lines to produce a discrete single use package. Several variations, including flapped and asymmetric embodiments, are illustrated.

  • Patent number: 5567260
Abstract: A method is disclosed for attaching an elastomeric film laminate web to the longitudinal side edges of an absorbent article such as a sanitary napkin. The method involves using a system of different adhesive applying mechanisms (that is, glue guns) and different applications of adhesive in a spiral pattern to provide precise control over the pattern and the amount of adhesive applied to bond the web of material to the absorbent article.

  • Patent number: 5562651
Abstract: Absorbent articles, particularly sanitary napkins, having longitudinally adjustable flaps are provided. The flaps are connected to the central absorbent body of the article by an extensible means and can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction either by manually positioning the flaps or by using an optional adjustment tab to adjust the position of the flaps. Absorbent articles of the present invention thus provide improved protection to undergarments and improved comfort to a wearer, since the wearer can adjust both the flaps and the central absorbent body of the article in an optimal position for their particular needs.

  • Patent number: 5514067
Abstract: An improved top opening, rectangular flexible bag for containing a stack of highly compressed flexible articles. The bag has front and back panels, two side panels and top and bottom panels, all of which are connected together to form an internal compartment for containing the stack under high compression. The stack is arranged within the bag in such a way that the side panels are under tension. The line of weakness defines the entire top portion of the bag which can be easily removed, thus exposing the entire contents of the bag for easy removal. The improvement to the bag is that the line of weakness is applied to the front and back panel of the bag simultaneously, thus providing perfect alignment of the lines of weakness where they intersect the side seals of the bag. The bag is further improved with a notch where the line of weakness intersects the side seal, thus significantly reducing the force to initiate the tear through the bead of plastic created by the side seal.

  • Patent number: 5484505
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for affixing a fastener to the garment side of an absorbent article having a profiled shape, especially an absorbent article that is thicker in the center than at the ends. The-method involves placing a fastener with its pressure sensitive adhesive surface adjacent the garment side of the absorbent article, and applying pressure to adhere the pressure sensitive adhesive surface to the garment side of the absorbent article while the absorbent article and the fastener are between a compressible component and an anvil surface. The apparatus comprises a compressible component comprising a surface with a plurality of compressible, resilient elements projecting therefrom in a direction toward an anvil surface.

  • Patent number: 5484636
Abstract: A sanitary napkin wrapper and adhesive tab construction for such a wrapper are disclosed. The adhesive tab can, in a preferred embodiment, be applied to the package formed by the wrapper contemporaneously with its own landing member to form a complete fastening system. The sanitary napkin wrapper can also be provided with a flap or pouch in several variations for securing the used sanitary napkin for disposal.
