  • Patent number: 6452515
Abstract: A video encoder and decoder are provided for processing a sequence of animated pictures in such a way that an interactive game, such as a puzzle for instance, may be played. Each picture of a movie sequence is divided into a predetermined number of pieces that are then randomly coded (according to the MPEG-4 standard), transmitted and/or stored, decoded and displayed. It is then possible to play with the pieces to reorder them while they are in motion (with possible associated audio), according to predefined rules and ends of scenarios. The left and right buttons of a mouse, or a similar control device, are used to displace either one piece, or a group of attached pieces respectively, in order to verify if the proposed location for a piece is free and possible (no contradiction with any other surrounding piece) and then to drop said piece on the new spot, or, on the contrary, if some contradiction is detected, send back the piece (or, respectively, the group of attached pieces) to its previous location.

  • Patent number: 6452644
Abstract: The invention relates to the reception of data by a data broadcast receiver, particularly, a mobile data receiver for the Japanese TV data multibroadcast sound subcarrier system. The receiver is controlled to receive a desired type of data, for example, weather forecasts, news, stock prices, etc. The invention provides the transmission of time information which specifies, for each type of data, when the data will be transmitted or retransmitted. This allows the receiver to enter a standby mode in which the power consumption is reduced. On, or slightly before, the specified time, the receiver switches on to receive, decode and display the desired data. The invention is also applicable in television receivers having the facility to receive electronic program guides (EPG) or other services. The receiver is informed about the time at which an updated version of the EPG can be expected.

  • Patent number: 6445306
Abstract: A remote control system in which a program-up or program-down activation on a control remote device effects the selection of the next or prior available channel that is likely to contain a program of a particular selected genre, or category. The system includes an identification of those programs that are likely to relate to each particular category. When the user selects a category, the user incrementally selects from the programs contained within the selected category. In the system, a list builder includes a number of capabilities for improving the selective quality of the program selection, having access, for example, to an information source that provides the time of each scheduled program on each channel, and an indication of each program's genre, rating, and other related items.

  • Patent number: 6437994
Abstract: An LLC power converter has an output voltage which is determined by a frequency controller controlling the frequency of an on and off switching of the switches (5, 6) of the converter. In order to stabilize the output voltage at varying output currents, a control circuit feeds back the variation of the total current (I) in the converter to the frequency controller (22, 25) for correcting the frequency of the on and off switching of the switches.

  • Patent number: 6426708
Abstract: A parking advisor images scenes of a parking area and identifies free spaces using image processing techniques. The advisor then makes recommendations as to which areas a driver should go based on the locations of free spaces. One way of outputting the recommendations is to display them on a terminal at an entry gate or to print them on a ticket, receipt, or other piece of paper. An entry terminal may be provided to allow the user to enter a preferred destination served by the parking area. For example, the destination could be a particular airline terminal or department store. The advisor may select, among the free spaces identified, those that are most convenient to the destination and provide corresponding directions.

  • Patent number: 6421100
Abstract: An apparatus for checking the alignment of a projection lens assembly includes a base for mounting the apparatus on the projection lens assembly, a gimbal system having a bottom section mounted to the base and a top section, the gimbal system having position adjusters for adjusting the position of the bottom section in two orthogonal direction with respect to the base, and having tilt adjusters for angularly adjusting a plane of the top section with a plane of the base, and a laser generator mounted on the top section. The position adjusters and the tilt adjusters are used to position a laser beam to be emitted by the laser generation to be coaxial with a central axis of the projection lens assembly. When the laser generator is then energized, the laser beam forms a visible red dot on the rear projection screen and, using simple measurements, an operator is able to verify the alignment of the projection lens assembly in the rear projection television receiver.

  • Patent number: 6418269
Abstract: A format for the recording of trick play signals in which trick play segments, having sync blocks of information of a trick play signal, are recorded in groups of p successive tracks. At least first and second trick play signals are recorded on the record carrier. The first trick play signal is meant for reproduction in a reproduction apparatus at a reproduction speed n1 times the recording speed with which the trick play signals are recorded on the record carrier. The second trick play signal is meant for reproduction in the reproduction apparatus at a reproduction speed n2 times the recording speed. Both trick play signals are recorded such that upon reproduction at the speed n1 times the recording speed, m1 sync blocks of information of the first trick play signal and m1 sync blocks of the second trick play signal are read from the record carrier during one revolution of the head drum in the reproduction apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6418270
Abstract: A signal processing technique for generating and processing trick play information for recording on a record carrier is used in an apparatus for recording a digital information signal onto a record carrier, in which the apparatus includes a first error correction encoder for error correcting trick play sync blocks generated from the digital information signal, a second error correction encoder for error correcting sync blocks formed from sync blocks of the digital information signal and the error corrected trick play sync blocks, and a third error correction encoder for error correcting each of the error corrected sync blocks. In the technique, the order that the trick play sync blocks provided by the first error correction encoder to the second error correction encoder is not the same as the order in which the third error correction encoder supplies the trick play sync blocks to the writing heads.

  • Patent number: 6415099
Abstract: A recording arrangement (1) for receiving and recording a television signal (F) and for receiving an information signal (I) which contains television program information (FPI), for example, title information about future television programs. The recording arrangement (1) has a keyword detector (54) which derives at least one keyword characteristic of the fields of interest of the user from title information of a television program recorded by the recording arrangement (1). A selector (58) selects, from the title information of future television programs, which is contained in the television program information (FPI), the title information containing at least one detected keyword. Selected television programs can be displayed on a display device (3) or can be recorded automatically.

  • Patent number: 6414450
Abstract: An optocoupler circuit includes a pulse generator which supplies a pulsed signal to the light-emitting device, while the pulsed signal has at least two different levels of which at least one of the levels is controllable. The pulsed signal is a combination of an input pulse signal and an input level signal. The light-emitting device produces an amount of light which depends on the levels of the pulsed signal. The photosensitive device supplies an output signal which depends on the amount of light received from the light-emitting device. A separation circuit receives the output signal and separates an output pulse signal therefrom, indicating an occurrence of a pulse of the input pulse signal, and an output level signal corresponding to a value of the at least one controllable level and thus to the input level signal.

  • Patent number: 6411949
Abstract: Enhanced content data is supplied in association with a media selection. The enhanced content data is customized responsive to a user profile. The uncustomized enhanced content is stored as a data structure having levels of nodes. Each node within a given level represents an alternative version of a shared enhanced content sub-topic. A processor chooses between nodes within the levels and assembles the chosen nodes to produce the customized enhanced content data.

  • Patent number: 6400408
Abstract: A television signal processing device (12) for receiving and processing a television signal (F) and an information signal (I) which contains television program information (FPI) about future television programs. The television signal processing device (12)has television program information determining means (34) by which television program information (FPI) can be determined from the teletext information (TI) of all receivable television signals (F) and can be stored. The television program information determining means (34) are now adapted to autonomously store in a data block address memory (37) at least one teletext page number (TSN) in correlation with television signal identification information (FKI) which identifies the television signal (F) containing the received teletext information (TI). The stored teletext page number (TSN) then identifies a teletext page of the television signal (F) from which television program information (FPI) has been derived successfully the last time.
