Patent number: 6561613Abstract: A method for determining a printhead misalignment of a printer. One step includes printing a printhead alignment test pattern including spaced-apart images at least partially aligned substantially along a printhead scan axis. A sensor is moved along the printhead scan axis at a known speed over the plurality of images. Sampled data points are obtained from the sensor at a known sampling rate. Another step includes determining the locations along the printhead scan axis of the edges of the images using the sampled data points, the known speed of the sensor, and the known sampling rate. An additional step includes calculating the printhead misalignment from the determined locations of the edges of the images.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2001Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Lexmark International, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Kelly Cunnagin, Eric Todd DeBusschere, Charles Aaron Judge, David Golman King, Patrick Laurence Kroger

Patent number: 6530632Abstract: An inkjet printer having an envelope comer printing apparatus that prints print data on the comer of an envelope independently from the printing function performed by the printer with respect to the sheet media printed by the printer. The printer housing includes a slot in a front corner positioned to receive an envelope corner for purposes of printing print data such as a return address or postage on the envelope corner. The printhead of the printer is capable of being positioned over the slot in the front corner of the printer housing and a sensor located within the printer housing near the slot detects the insertion of the envelope corner and initiates printing by the printhead. The printhead prints the print data from the non-volatile memory of the printer and does not require constant interfacing between the printer and the computer attached to the printer.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2001Date of Patent: March 11, 2003Assignee: Lexmark International, Inc.Inventor: John Thomas Writt

Patent number: 6520620Abstract: A maintenance station of an ink-jet printer includes a maintenance carrier. The maintenance carrier has a plurality of positions, including a pumping position. A respective maintenance function is enabled in each of the positions. A pump pumps ink when the maintenance carrier is in the pumping position. A gear train both translates the maintenance carrier between the plurality of positions and actuates the pump. A single motor drives the gear train to thereby translate the maintenance carrier and actuate the pump.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2000Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Lexmark International, Inc.Inventors: Benjamin Alan Askren, John Edward Borsuk, Donn Duane Bryant, Edward Lawrence Kiely, Robert Flynt Strean
