Patent number: 4270693Abstract: An electronic thermostat includes digital electronic apparatus for simulating heat anticipation so that in operation, the temperature of the room being heated or cooled does not exhibit excessive overshoot. A sensor generates a signal representative of temperature in the room. In a preferred embodiment, the system compares the temperature signal with a composite set point signal. The composite set point signal is generated by a data processor to effect the following system characteristics: (1) when the temperature signal remains constant and is equal to the set point, the system can cycle approximately six times an hour with a fifty percent duty cycle; (2) a relatively small change in temperature or set point will modify the duty cycle substantially; and (3) if the temperature and set point signals differ by more than a predetermined amount, the system will lock on or off, depending on which is greater.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1979Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Assignee: Johnson Controls, Inc.Inventor: Thomas E. Patent number: 4269589Abstract: A control arrangement for a fuel ignition system having pilot and main valves in which the energization of the operate windings of the pilot and main valves, which are connected in series, is controlled by a silicon controlled rectifier. The SCR is enabled at the start of each ignition cycle by trigger pulses provided by a pulse generating circuit and when enabled, the SCR provides a shunt circuit path around the main valve winding permitting the pilot valve winding to be energized at its operating level effecting pilot valve operation and preventing the main valve from operating. When a pilot flame is provided, a capacitor of a flame sensing network is charged by flame rectified current, generating an inhibit signal for the pulse generating circuit which causes the SCR to be cut off, interrupting the shunt path to allow the main valve winding to be energized, effecting main valve operation.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1978Date of Patent: May 26, 1981Assignee: Johnson Controls, Inc.Inventor: Russell B. Patent number: 4266257Abstract: A motor overheating protection circuit includes an enabling circuit which responds to a trigger signal provided by a reset circuit upon application of power to the protection circuit to enable a motor drive circuit to effect energization of the motor. A temperature sensing circuit provides a control signal indicative of the temperature of the motor, and should the control signal exceed the set point of a threshold detecting circuit of the enabling circuit, indicative of overheating of the motor, the enabling circuit inhibits the motor drive circuit deenergizing the motor. Once the motor has been deenergized as the result of an overheating condition, the reset circuit maintains the enabling circuit locked out until the protection circuit is deactivated and then reactivated.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1978Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: Johnson Controls, Inc.Inventor: George Rudich, Jr.

Patent number: 4266104Abstract: A switch mechanism includes a fixed contact bar on which two or more contacts may be mounted. A movable contact is associated with each of the fixed contacts. Two independent toggle mechanisms are provided, each responsive to a different pressure-responsive displacement actuator for selectively actuating one or more of the movable contacts. In one embodiment having two normally open and one normally closed set of contacts, one toggle mechanism is connected by a sliding yoke to the movable contacts of one normally open set and the normally closed set, and the other toggle mechanism is connected by a second, independent sliding yoke to the movable contacts of the other normally open set and the normally closed set. Hence the normally closed contacts (which may be used to de-energize a compressor motor) are opened if either pressure limit is exceeded, but only the normally open set is disclosed which is associated with the tripped toggle mechanism. This may be used to indicate an alarm.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: Johnson Controls, Inc.Inventor: Denis Capel

Patent number: 4265465Abstract: A spring assembly is carried by a mounting casting. The mounting casting includes a receptacle which is adapted to mount to a horizontal frame member by means of a vertical bolt which, when tightened, adjusts the elevation of the spring assembly by rotating the mounting casting about the frame member due to a shim effect achieved by the slight off-parallel alignment of the receptacle and the axes of the springs. This raises the spring assembly to take its weight off the draw bar and makes it easier to telescope the draw bar. A spring casting includes upper dogs for mounting an actuating lever which is rotatable between a latching and an unlatched position by vertical motion. A latch member on the draw bar is locked between the spring casting and the lever, but is released when the lever is lowered to permit the draw bar to be extended to the rear for alignment with a trailer hitch. Other improvements permit the use of coil springs without grinding the ends flat.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: DMI, Inc.Inventor: William J. Deitrich, Sr.
