  • Patent number: 6568617
Abstract: A leader for use with a tape reel including a first end, a second end spaced from the first end, and an elongated section extending between the first end and the second end. The second end has a connection feature configured to be selectively coupled with a second leader. The elongated section defines a smoothing indenture that does not extend through the thickness of the leader. The smoothing indenture is positioned to receive the connection feature as the leader tape is wound about a tape reel and is configured to limit embossment of a storage tape otherwise associated with the leader in the wound state.

  • Patent number: 6538776
Abstract: The invention presents the concept of self-referenced holographic data recording. In exemplary embodiments, the invention comprises methods of recording holograms on holographic data storage media; media produced by such methods; and self-referencing holographic data storage systems. A method of recording data in a holographic recording medium may comprise illuminating a medium with a data encoded first optical beam, optically directing a zero frequency Fourier component of the first optical beam to create a second optical beam, and illuminating the medium with the second optical. In some embodiments, for example, a self-referencing holographic data storage system has a single optical path directed towards a medium.

  • Patent number: 6513052
Abstract: A method and system for presenting targeted advertising during an Internet-based connection, such as a web-based data backup session in which data is communicated from a user computer to a remote storage area for archival via the Internet. According to the invention, the user computer is communicatively coupled to the server via a computer network and an asset profile for the computer is generated. The asset profile identifies the software applications that are currently loaded on the computer and the current hardware configuration for the computer including a processor type and connected hardware devices. In addition, the asset profile contains usage information such as a frequency of use for the various software applications. As a function of the uploaded asset profile, advertisements are selected from an advertisement database and are communicated to the computer for display to the user.

  • Patent number: 6493174
Abstract: Optical servo systems and magnetic data storage tape for use with magnetic data storage drives. The servo system utilizes a head mechanism that includes an optical head and a magnetic head. The optical head is adapted to detect a series of optical indicator marks located on a servo track on the tape. The magnetic head is adapted to detect one or a series of magnetic reference indicator marks located on a corresponding data track. The magnetic reference indicator marks are, in one embodiment, spaced periodically along the length of the tape. The magnetic reference indicator marks allow recalibration of the optical servo system by permitting the determination of any dimensional offset between the optical head and the magnetic head attributable to manufacturing tolerances or environmental factors. In one embodiment, a separate temperature sensor may be used to determine thermal changes in and around the head mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6478244
Abstract: A tape reel assembly for use with a data storage tape cartridge. The data storage tape cartridge includes a housing, a tape reel pin, the tape reel assembly, and a storage tape. The tape reel assembly is rotatably associated with the tape reel pin and includes a hub, a spherical piece and a sleeve. The spherical piece is insert molded within an axial bore of the hub and provides a thrust surface. The sleeve is also insert molded within the axial bore of the hub and provides a journal bearing surface. In accordance with a method of the present invention, the tape reel assembly is formed as part of an injection molding process, whereby a core pin precisely positions the spherical piece and co-axially centers the sleeve relative to an outer, tape winding surface of the hub.
