    Abstract: A fluid operated and controlled irrigation and aspiration device for ophthalmic use. A source of fluid under pressure is connected through foot pedal operated valves to clamps for controlling irrigation through a conventional handpiece, and to a vacuum generating device. Selecting valves are provided for isolating the vacuum generating means, and for directing pressure to a pulsing circuit. The pulsing circuit can be used to control the vacuum to yield a pulsing aspiration; and, in a modification of the device, the pulsing circuit can be used to control a pressure circuit to operate a cutting device.

    Abstract: An improved polymerization emulsifier for use in the manufacture of synthetic rubber is prepared wherein a mixture of tall oil fatty acids and resin acids as found in crude or distilled tall oil is disproportionated to reduce the amount of abietic type acids and linoleic type acids and treated with acid catalyzed formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde. The disproportionation and aldehyde treatment can occur in sequence or simultaneously. Emulsifiers prepared by the invention process minimize prefloc in latex production and improve rubber physicals.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for regenerating wet spent carbon containing volatile impurities wherein the wet spent carbon is dried in a drying zone utilizing incinerated reactivation zone gaseous effluent. The reactivation zone gaseous effluent is derived by reactivating dried spent carbon in a reactivation zone at pyrolysis conditions to remove volatile components from the adsorbent. Removal is effected utilizing combustion gases. The reactivation zone gaseous effluent is comprised of the combustion gases, the vaporized volatile impurities, and, where steam is employed in the reactivation zone to remove fixed carbon, substantial quantities of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. By interposing the incineration zone between the drying and reactivation zone, efficiency of the overall process is maximized.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are cross-linked lignin gels which have been found useful as pesticide carriers in controlled release pesticide systems. The carrier is a highly reswellable cross-linked lignin gel prepared by reacting alkali lignin with from 1 mole to 10 moles of cross-linking agent, such as formaldehyde, per 1,000 grams of lignin. An aqueous solution of lignin and the cross-linking agent is reacted at elevated temperatures until cross-linking occurs to the point where a discernible increase in viscosity takes place and the gel is formed. The gels are allowed to dehydrate, and the pesticide in an amount from 0.1:1.0 to 2:1 (pesticide to carrier) is included by reswelling the dehydrated gel in an aqueous solution of the pesticide.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for polymerizing technical lignins, hardwood as well as softwood and sulfonated as well as unsulfonated. The process involves the sequential treatment of the lignin material with formaldehyde and air (or oxygen) to increase the molecular weight. The lignin is first treated with from 0.5 to 3.5 moles of formaldehyde per 1,000 grams of lignin at a pH between 10.5 and 11.5 and a temperature from 50.degree. C. to 80.degree. C. for from 3 to 24 hours to form a lignin-formaldehyde adduct, preferably with minimum cross-linking of the lignin. Then, the thus formed lignin-formaldehyde adduct is oxidized at a temperature of from 25.degree. C. to 80.degree. C. with air or molecular oxygen for from 2 to 24 hours.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein x and y are integers from 3 to 9, x and y together equal 12, one Z is hydrogen and the other Z is a carboxylic acid group, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are fatty acid groups. A process for introducing approximately one carboxylic acid group per triglyceride molecule in vegetable oils has been developed, and the resulting acid adduct forms soaps with attractive properties. The process comprises first conjugation of the double bonds of the nonconjugated polyunsaturated groups present in the fatty acid ester and elaidinization with a catalyst, such as iodine, and then adduct formation with acrylic acid to form the compounds of the general formula. This process also greatly stabilizes the triglyceride against atmospheric oxidation and polymerization reactions.
