  • Patent number: 5959196
Abstract: The viscometer of the present invention comprises a chamber, and inside the chamber is secured a measuring tube and a falling piston. The piston has a lift plate secured to its top by means of a short small shaft. There are one or more lifting fingers, which operate through a defined distance large enough to raise the piston up and then drop back down to a base position thus leaving the piston free to fall by gravity to its lowermost position. However, the mechanical design is such that these fingers when lowered will not touch the actual piston itself. Mounted underneath the piston, when it is in its lowermost position, is a proximity switch that is used to sense when the piston is in its lowermost position. The time it takes to travel from its raised position to its lowermost position is a function of viscosity. The present invention combines the concept of a "falling member" with a compact bi-directional flow concept and an easily opened and cleaned measuring chamber.

  • Patent number: 5872454
Abstract: Disclosed is a two-point calibration procedure, that when used with a mathematical algorithm, improves the accuracy of electrolytic conductivity measurements by correcting for non-linear behavior of conductivity cells. Unlike purely mathematical means of correcting for non-linearity which may use second or higher order equations, this algorithm has the following advantages: it is based on an analysis of the physical phenomena which are responsible for non-linearity; it yields one unique solution, i.e., it uses an equation that has only one root; and it yields diagnostic information concerning the behavior of the cell.

  • Patent number: 5866053
Abstract: An extrusion system for providing a foamed material in which a material such as a polymer material is supplied to an extruder for movement through a rotating screw member. The material is placed in a molten state and a foaming agent, such as a supercritical fluid, is introduced into the extruder at a selected pressure so that a two-phase mixture of the molten material and the foaming agent is formed. The foaming agent is then diffused into and dissolved in the molten material to form a single-phase solution which is forwarded from a solution formation to a nucleation device. A thermodynamic instability is induced through a rapid pressure drop, e.g., higher than 0.9 GPa/s in the nucleation device to nucleate microcells in the solution. A further shaping device, e.g., a die, can be used to produce a foamed material of a desired shape.

  • Patent number: 5852033
Abstract: The lamellarin compounds disclosed herein have been found to be inhibitors of MDR, i.e., acquired multidrug resistance, which has become a major problem in the treatment of various cancers. The lamellarin compounds disclosed herein have also been found to be cytotoxic to MDR cells. MDR is believed to be associated with certain alterations in tumor cells, including an over-expression of a certain high molecular weight membrane glycoprotein and a decrease in the ability of the tumor cell to accumulate and retain chemotherapeutic agents. The present invention is thus directed to methods of treating MDR-type tumors with an effective anti-MDR amount (either inhibitory or cytotoxic) of one or more lamellarin compounds, which compounds have been found to be effective antitumoral agents against MDR cells.

  • Patent number: 5849540
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a novel depsipeptide has been isolated from a new marine strain L-13-ACM2-092 belonging to the family Micromonosporaceae. Its production by aerobic fermentation under controlled conditions of the strain, and the isolation and purification of PM-93135 are described herein. The compound and the fermentation broth demonstrate significant activity against several cancer cell lines. The compound also shows activity against several gram positive bacteria.

  • Patent number: 5840168
Abstract: A new substrate for the construction of solid internal contact ion-selective electrode comprising a conductive and porous carbon matrix is described. The well-defined (i.e., fixed) interfacial potential between the organic electroactive phase and the internal reference element, coupled with the electrode's very slow change from water activity at the internal reference element, supports the well-behaved and reproducible electrode operation. Solid contact sensors for two different ions were constructed, and their potentiometric behavior was compared with their symmetric counterparts. The potentiometric response was monitored over a period of one month with excellent results for drift, base line stability, response time, selectivity, and detection limit.
