    Abstract: A method of preparing a breathable, custom-molded liner for an artificial limb socket includes the steps of providing a liner comprising an open-celled foam material impregnated with a curable resin, activating the curable resin, and deforming the foam material by positioning a residual limb on one of opposing surfaces of the liner, and positioning the artificial limb socket on a second opposing surface of the liner until curing is substantially complete to create and retain an impression of the residual limb in the foam material. A liner blank useful for preparing an artificial limb socket, comprising a foam material impregnated with a curable resin and sewn into the shape of a sock for an artificial limb, is also described.

    Abstract: The present invention provides thermoplastic ophthalmic lens blocking compositions that have many advantages over traditional metal alloy materials. Preferred compositions comprise a blend of (i) a hydrocarbon resin, preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon resin; (ii) a side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer; and (iii) optionally an modifier or mixture of modifiers, preferably straight chain alcohols. The composition may also comprise one or more modifiers, fillers or heat absorbing materials. In one embodiment, the composition is used to fill the cavity between a preformed lens block and a lens. In another embodiment the composition is used to form a lens block. Methods of holding a lens blank are taught. Tapes that provide a receptive surface against which the composition may be adhered are disclosed.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an optical fluorescence based sensor for measuring the concentration of a gas (e.g., CO.sub.2 or ammonia) in a medium such as blood which has improved drift stability. In a preferred embodiment, the sensors of the present invention comprise microcompartments of an aqueous phase having a pH sensitive sensing component within a hydrophobic barrier phase. The sensors of the present invention are substantially free of partitioning species other than the analyte of interest which can migrate from one phase to the other in response to a change in pH in the aqueous phase and which substantially affect the concentration dependent signal. In an alternative embodiment, the sensors of the present invention are constructed so as to retard the migration of partitioning species, thus reducing the initial rate of drift.

    Abstract: An apparatus for sealing an environment defined by a periphery is provided. The sealing apparatus includes a first frame defining an opening and being disposed on the periphery of the environment and a second frame defining an opening. A flexible material is rotatably interconnected between the first frame opening and the second frame opening to form an iris aperture. The size of the iris aperture can be adjusted by rotating the second frame with respect to the first frame. The first frame may be secured with respect to the second frame in order to fix the size of the iris aperture. For securing the frames with respect to one another, hook and loop fastening material may be provided. The environment and periphery may, for example, be a surgical patient and a surgical drape, respectively.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an orthopedic casting article having soft edges. In one embodiment, the article comprises a flexible sheet material impregnated or coated with two different resins. In an alternative embodiment, the article comprises an extruded sheet material comprising two different extruded materials. One of the resins or extruded materials is soft or resilient compared to the other resin or material. By selectively providing the softer materials at defined regions of the article the hardness of the region can be adjusted. The article may be in the form of an orthopedic casting tape comprising a fabric backing that is longitudinally impregnated or coated with two different curable resins. A harder, first curable resin is used to coat a longitudinally extending center region of the fabric backing; and a softer, second curable resin is used to coat at least one longitudinally extending edge region of the fabric backing.

    Abstract: Sterilization indicators utilizing moisture-resistant, water-dispersible, pressure sensitive adhesives are provided. The sterilization indicators comprise at least one backing strip, preferably water-dispersible, which is coated on at least one side with the moisture-resistant, water-dispersible, pressure sensitive adhesive. A sterilization indicator strip is affixed to the backing strip and is easily removable from the sterilization indicator. The indicator tapes are useful to maintain a sterilization wrapper containing articles to be sterilized in a closed position during sterilization, and normal pre- and post-sterilization handling, while also providing a means to indicate if the wrapped articles have passed through a sterilization cycle. After use, the sterilization indicator strip is easily removed, and the adhesives coating the sterilization indicators, and preferably also the backing strips, disperse an aqueous alkali solution, such as are found in commercial laundries.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an article including a curable resin and a filler associated with the resin. The incorporation of fillers into the casting materials of the present invention adds substantially to the strength of the cured casting material as well as to the handling properties of the uncured casting tape or bandage. The incorporation of fillers into the casting materials of the present invention also imparts air and vapor porosity to the cured casting materials. If desired articles of the present invention may also incorporate fibers (either individually, bundled, or in the form of a light-weight scrim) to provide increased cohesiveness to the uncured article. Extremely moldable casting tapes are also provided which comprise a highly-filled composite material coated on a light-weight scrim. The casting tapes of this embodiment handle like traditional plaster of Paris casts yet cure to a weight-bearing cast in less than one hour.
