Abstract: Macromolecules in the shape of three-dimensional kites, barbells, and other shapes are disclosed. The shaped macromolecules are prepared the reaction of one or more dendritic polymers and a linear polymer. The kite-shaped macromolecules are dendritic polymers attached at either their focal points or at an outer to a long carbon chain group. The barbell macromolecules have dendritic polymers at either end of the molecule, which polymers are connected together through the focal points of each by a suitable connecting substituent such as a linear polymer. The shaped macromolecules are used in specialty medical and technological applications including such as drug delivery agents, imaging materials, molecular devices, thin film devices, surface modifiers, transport agents, compatibilizers, rheology control agents, molecular ball bearings, molecular dipoles, non-linear optical materials, medical imaging agents, membrane and cell modifiers, complexing agents, adhesives, interface strengthening agents, and the like.

Abstract: A tool for making gentle repetitive movements to the joints between a person's sacrum and ilium which allow for proper pelvic alignment when one or both have become irritated, inflamed, or malaligned, and causes significant pain. Use of the tool generates a lateral and caudal directed force on an affected ilium thereby mobilizing it back into its normal position. The tool also may be used to realign the pubic synthesis.
Abstract: An analytical system for rapid detection and identification of different analytes directly from a test sample by mixing test material with a germinogenic source and enzyme-free spores, allowing the mixture to stand for a time to allow analyte-induced spore germination and subsequent de novo activity of an enzyme capable of producing a germinant in the presence of the germinogenic source and detecting the presence of a germination-derived product. The germinant which is formed promotes further spore germination with concomitant additional de novo enzyme synthesis or activation which results in a propagating cascade of analyte-independent germination after which a germination-derived product can be easily detected. The technique is particularly efficient to conduct thousands of parallel assays in an array of microscopic wells.
Abstract: Methods of more rapidly producing aerogel products by means of a rapid solvent exchange of solvent inside wet gels with supercritical CO2 by injecting supercritical, rather than liquid, CO2 into an extractor that has been pre-heated and pre-pressurized to substantially supercritical conditions or above. Preferably, pressure waves are applied to the supercritical CO2 to enhance the solvent exchange. The rapid solvent exchange process is followed by depressurization, optionally with a gas exchange. Preferably, pressure waves are used to speed up the depressurization. The process greatly reduces the time for forming aerogel products.

Abstract: A non-cracking hydrophilic polyether sulfone membrane is prepared by (a) directly coating the entire surface of a hydrophobic polyethersulfone membrane with an aqueous solution of a polyalkylene oxide polymer and at least one polyfunctional monomer, and (b) polymerizing the monomer over the entire surface of the membrane under conditions which cause the resulting polymer to attach to the polyethersulfone membrane and the polyethylene oxide to form a non-extractable surface which does not crack when the membrane is folded to form a pleated cartridge.
Abstract: Polyester water-based defoamers are prepared by reaction of a dimer fatty acid, a fatty acid and two different polyalkylene polyols, e.g. polypropylene glycol and polyethylene glycol. The resulting polyesters are readily dispersible in water to form a water-based macroemulsion in the absence of any oil or short chain alcohols. The macroemulsion is an effective defoamer in ground-wood and thermomechanical pulping operations.
Abstract: A process for controlling/reducing the deposition of stickies from paper stock suspensions in papermaking involving the steps of: (a) providing a paper stock suspension containing stickies; and (b) contacting the stickies in the paper stock suspension with a copolymer of about 75-95 wt % acrylamide and about 5-25 wt % vinyl acetate.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the semi-automated synthesis of libraries of organic compounds are disclosed. Abstract: Enhanced macromixing, mesomixing, and micromixing of multiple discrete reactant streams, particularly for precipitation reactions of low density pumpable fluids, are obtained by controlled continuous high pressure multiple reactant streams flowing into a chemical mixer/reactor. Individual reactant streams are pressurized to about 8,000 to 50,000 psi and achieve velocities up to about 250 meters/second in the final stage of the chemical mixer/reactor. Reactant flows are controlled by a combination of a fixed restriction and a variable driving pump.
