  • Patent number: 5115866
Abstract: In accordance with this invention a soil vapor well for removing volatile hydrocarbons from the vadose zone is provided. The well comprises a larger diameter first bore hole extending from the surface of the earth for several feet and preferably to the base of the clay layer, an impervious casing having a smaller diameter than the first bore hole is mounted concentrically within the first bore hole and extends from the bottom of the first bore hole to a point above the surface of the earth. Concrete fills the space between the sides of the first bore hole and the casing to provide a substantially air-tight seal from the earth below the first bore to the surface of the earth. A second bore hole, having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the casing extends downwardly from the lower end of the casing to a point located above the water table. Aggregate fills the second bore hole and the casing.

  • Patent number: 5110785
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a novel composition of matter which is prepared by subjecting at least one woodlike particle, such as a sawdust particle and preferably selected quantities of sawdust particles to a special treatment. Each particle has a cellular structure including a plurality of interconnected, generally tubular cell walls composed in part of hemicellulose that are subjected to a selectively controlled thermolytic heating above about 280.degree. C. but not above about 380.degree. C. and preferably between 300+ C. and 360.degree. C. to cause the hemicellulose to be converted to an oil-like oleophilic and hydrophobic substance on the cell walls and reduce the thickness of the cell walls to render the particle and particles oleophilic and hydrophobic. The product floats on water, absorbs oil, for absorbing hydrocarbons on the surface of water, and is an improved fuel both without and with the hydrocarbons.

  • Patent number: 5108344
Abstract: In accordance with this invention a method of preparing a leg cut of meat for cooking and serving from which all bones except the shank bone have been removed but wherein the cut retains its general shape of an unboned leg of meat is provided. A generally longitudinal cut is made along the inside surface of the leg into the location of the femur from the top round thereof to the bottom round thereof, as viewed when the leg is hung from a meat hook. Next, a cut is made into the joint between the shank and the femur and the flesh is opened to expose the upper round of the femur. The upper round is engaged with a meat hook. Downward pressure is applied on the femur with the meat hook while a cut is made through the joint. The femur is peeled out of the leg with the meat hook and the bone is removed. The meat cut can then be secured together by tieing or wrapping to hold it in substantially the same shape it had prior to boning.

  • Patent number: 5061116
Abstract: A channel section is of generally U-shaped cross-section and is made from glass fibre reinforced concrete. The section can be thin and light and easily man-handled. In order to provide the section with sufficient rigidity during the setting of a concrete back fill around the section, a framework of reinforcing bars is provided spaced from the reinforced concrete channel member by tie bars. The reinforcing bars and tie bars form a rigid composite structure with the fibre reinforced concrete member which keeps the member rigid while the concrete back fill is drying and which forms a reinforcing structure in the concrete after drying.

  • Patent number: 5040573
Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for forming a loop in a wire that is particularly suited for attaching a wire to a ceiling suspension bracket and allow free swinging movement of the wire on the bracket. The apparatus includes a wire storage and feed bin, support for each wire during the loop forming, a twist member, a control head that moves the wire to form a bend, a drive that rotates the twist member through a selected number of revolutions to twist the bend to form the loop, coils and a tail in the wire. Surface portions of the control head confine the movement of the wire during the formation of the coils and loop. A control circuit for the drive motor causes the motor to turn only a selected number of revolutions to form a selected number of coils. A final positioning assembly causes the twist member to stop at the same position after each loop forming operation.
