Patent number: 7436096Abstract: An electric machine includes a stator and a rotor disposed adjacent the stator. The rotor may be rotatable around a rotor rotation axis. The rotor may include a rotor core and a plurality of permanent magnets. The plurality of permanent magnets may include a permanent-magnet cluster disposed at least partially within the rotor core. The permanent-magnet cluster may be configured to create a magnetic pole of the rotor. Additionally, the permanent-magnet cluster may include multiple radial permanent-magnet layers. The rotor may also include one or more axially-extending channels located in a portion of the rotor core disposed between adjacent radial permanent-magnet layers.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2005Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Mustafa K. Patent number: 7357126Abstract: A heat exchanger for an air handling system is disclosed. The heat exchanger has an inlet, an outlet, and at least one passageway fluidly connecting the inlet and the outlet. The at least one passageway has a corrosive resistive feature that varies along a length of the at least one passageway.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2005Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: James Carl Durand, Ajey Janardan Kulkami

Patent number: 7260931Abstract: A hydraulic control system for a work machine is disclosed. The hydraulic control system has a fluid actuator, a supply of pressurized fluid, and a control valve movable to selectively pass pressurized fluid to the fluid actuator. The hydraulic control system also has a sensor configured to sense the pressure of the pressurized fluid passed to the fluid actuator and a controller in communication with the control valve and the sensor. The controller is configured to receive an input indicative of a desired velocity of the fluid actuator and to determine a fluid flow rate corresponding to the desired velocity. The controller is also configured to determine a ratio of the sensed pressure to a stall pressure of the supply and to scale down the determined flow rate an amount based on the determined ratio. The controller is further configured to move the control valve an amount corresponding to the scaled down flow rate.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2005Date of Patent: August 28, 2007Assignees: Caterpillar Inc., Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi Ltd.Inventors: Aleksandar M. Patent number: 7043975Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the operating health of a hydraulic system are provided. The method may include the steps of determining a plurality of operating parameters of the hydraulic system during operation of the hydraulic system, determining an estimated working condition value of the hydraulic system, modifying the estimated working condition value as a function of the operating parameters, and determining the operating health of the hydraulic system as a function of the working condition value. In one method, the working condition value may be indicative of an effective bulk modulus value of an operating fluid within at least part of the hydraulic system.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2003Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: Caterpillar IncInventor: Hongliu Du

Patent number: 6839638Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for calibrating a payload monitor of a work machine. Altering the load carrying body of a work machine can adversely impact the accuracy of a payload monitor. The present invention provides a calibrating technique using an alternate coefficient that is programmed into the payload monitor. The alternate coefficient is then used by the payload monitor.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2002Date of Patent: January 4, 2005Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Kevin J. Lueschow, Giles K. Patent number: 6721680Abstract: A method is provided for promoting compliance by a vehicle operator with a payload standard for a vehicle. The payload weight of the vehicle is determined. The payload weight is compared with the payload standard to determine if the payload weight is compliant with the payload standard. The operation of the vehicle is then limited if the payload weight is not in compliance.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2001Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Caterpillar IncInventors: Giles Kent Sorrells, Dennis A.
