  • Patent number: 4339859
Abstract: A wire spoke, non-suspension type, automotive wheel is provided in which spokes are operably untensioned prior to vehicle loads being placed upon the wheel. An outer tubeless tire rim with a drop center is mounted to a wheel center. The wheel center includes a substantially thick and solid felly connected to a concentrically positioned hub. Wire spokes extend radially outward from the hub in a patterned circumferential array and have tenons or feet on inner ends thereof which are anchored within recesses at front and rear ends of the hub. Radially disposed outer ends of the spokes have plain terminations which are welded to form a plug anchor within circumferentially spaced bores in the felly to secure the spokes. The bores are preferably situated in inwardly extending dimples which are formed in the felly. The bores are partially frusto-conically shaped and are formed by a method using a circular punch and corresponding die.

  • Patent number: 4338868
Abstract: A process is provided for burning refuse containing polyvinyl chloride without the consequent production of phosgene. The refuse is carbonized in a rotary furnace at temperatures below 1200.degree. F., especially 700.degree. F., in an oxygen deficient atmosphere. A burnable gas containing the carbonized refuse is drawn from the furnace by an air jet wherein same is mixed with oxygen and selectively combusted. Uncarbonized refuse is collected and withdrawn after exiting the furnace. An apparatus is provided for combustion of the refuse in the nonphosgene generating process and includes the rotary furnace. Special seals are provided for the furnace to prevent excess oxygen from entering thereinto. In particular, the seals are utilized between the rotary ends of the furnace and stationary head associated with each end respectively.

  • Patent number: 4287581
Abstract: A device for detecting ultrasonic noise, particularly such noise as generated by fluid leaks, includes a directional ultrasonic microphone, amplifiers and ultrasonic filters, an envelope detector, an audio preamplifier and filter, a level control, a meter, an audio power amplifier and speaker, and a phase shift feedback network connected from the output of the power amplifier to an input thereof. A switch is operable in a first setting to connect the power amplifier to the level control to convey the audio frequency amplitude envelope of the detected ultrasonic noise through the speaker or in a second setting to connect the power amplifier to the feedback network. A level detector is operatively connected to the level control and provides a control signal which is conducted to the feedback network. When the control signal exceeds a selected level, the feedback loop circuit is completed, whereby the power amplifier oscillates audibly through the speaker and gives audible indication of an ultrasonic noise.

  • Patent number: 4276728
Abstract: A floor grid is provided for a trafficway for removing debris from traffic passing thereover. The grid comprises a support structure below the surface of the trafficway, a plurality of spaced tread rails defining an upper surface which is generally flush with the surface of the trafficway and being supported by the support structure, and a plurality of traverse spacer bars or channels positioned immediately beneath the tread rails. Each tread rail is secured to each spacer channel by a bolt where both cross. Each bolt has a head which is received in and is slidable, when the bolt is not tightened, along a pair of confronting slots in an associated tread rail. Each of the slots has a flat vertical surface which respectively butt against a pair of flat vertical surfaces of the bolt head preventing rotation of the bolt relative to the tread rail. Preferably the slots are just high enough to snugly receive the bolt heads. Feet extend outwardly from the lower end of each tread rail and engage the spacer channels.

  • Patent number: 4258795
Abstract: An on-off sprinkler head for fire extinguishing systems comprises a housing having a central cavity with an inlet aperture and a discharge orifice disposed at opposing ends thereof in an aligned orientation. A reciprocating valve having a valve head, a mating seat, and a stem is mounted axially in the central cavity, and controls the flow of fire extinguishing fluid therethrough. A temperature responsive, on-off drive motor is connected with the free end of the valve stem, and reciprocates the valve head with respect to the valve seat in response to selected temperature changes. The drive motor is mounted in the housing in a position axially offset from the aligned inlet aperture and discharge orifice, whereby during a discharge condition, the fire extinguishing fluid flows substantially unimpeded through the valve, and a solid, uninterrupted stream of fluid is emitted from the discharge orifice. The valve includes a deflector plate on which the fluid stream impinges and is dispersed into a spray.

  • Patent number: 4242985
Abstract: An animal feeding device in which the animal actuates the transfer of the feed from a sheltered feed storage hopper to a feeding station by working a lever or similar device. The feed hopper is positioned above the feeding station, whereby the feed will transfer by gravity therebetween. A rotatable cylinder having pockets therein is positioned between the storage hopper and the feeding station so as to block gravity flow of the feed. A rod is fixedly attached to the rotatable cylinder and extends outwardly into the feeding station, such that the animal may swing the rod from side to side thereby rotating the cylinder back and forth. The rotation of the cylinder alternatively causes the pockets therein to fill with feed and to empty into the feeding station. A dampening mechanism is provided which senses accumulation of feed in the feeding station and resists additional demand of feed by the animal.

  • Patent number: 4241656
Abstract: A self-cleaning nozzle for lithographic printing dampeners includes a central liquid duct and an air expansion chamber surrounding the liquid duct and defined by a cylindrical wall closed at an entrance end by a baffle having circumferential slits therethrough and at an exit end by a planar end wall spaced from the termination of the liquid duct and forming a mixing corridor therebetween. The end wall is positioned perpendicular to the liquid duct and to the direction of air traveling through the expansion chamber, thereby increasing turbulence in the air to more effectively break up the liquid stream into fine droplets. A slot orifice is formed in the end wall and is defined by a peripheral surface which forms an acute angle with an inner surface of the end wall and an obtuse angle with the outer surface thereof.
