  • Patent number: 6622259
Abstract: This invention allows a related set of coordinator services to migrate from one node to another without disrupting applications on any of the nodes in the system. Unlike other methods, this invention allows a set of interdependent services to be brought to “quiescence” and migrated together. Since service operations depend upon the results and/or data of other service operations, any particular operation can only complete properly when those other operations return data necessary for the completion of the dependent operation. Therefore, this invention permits the completion of non-disruptive migration by phasing the “quiescence” of the services. Operations that are most dependent upon other operations are suspended before those other operations; then the process waits for any current operations to complete.

  • Patent number: 6622186
Abstract: A buffer for adapting data flows from input channels to output channels is provided. The buffer includes a DRAM organized in blocks and a memory controller for managing assignment of the blocks to the chains of linked blocks. The DRAM contains, as a chain of linked blocks, data associated with each communication channel formed by a pair of input and output channels, and also contains a main queue of free blocks for listing unoccupied blocks. The memory controller includes a cache memory containing a partial queue of free blocks that the memory controller uses in managing block assignment. According to one embodiment, when a level of the partial queue reaches a predetermined minimum limit the cache memory is at least partially filled by a burst from the main queue, and when a level of the partial queue reaches a predetermined maximum limit the cache memory is at least partially emptied by a burst into the main queue.

  • Patent number: 6621271
Abstract: A device for controlling the operation of a vehicle battery exhibits two current paths for connecting the battery to the vehicle electrical system. Here, the first current path allows current to flow in both directions and the second current path only allows a charging current to flow from the vehicle electrical system to the battery. In addition, the first current path contains a switch which is only closed when the voltage at the generator connection is less than a predetermined value. Apart from this, a measuring device which measures a change in the state of charge of the battery, a storage device which stores the instantaneous state of charge of the battery, and a checking device which checks a predetermined electrical criterion for the maximum attainable state of charge of the battery, are provided.

  • Patent number: 6618752
Abstract: A system for multicasting a data stream transmits portable child hosts to client computers requesting to receive the multicast. The child hosts are capable of receiving the multicast data stream and also transmitting the data stream to other clients which subsequently request reception of the multicast data stream. Methods for managing the network to minimize the bandwidth load on participating computers, and to reconfigure the network when clients join or leave the network are also disclosed. According to another aspect of the invention a system and computer readable medium is disclosed for carrying out the above method.

  • Patent number: 6618040
Abstract: A pen-based tablet computer system that locates objects in a collection of stored images by using partial tracing of a graphical data object. The system uses data generated from the partial tracing of the graphical object to control a search of the input data file for the most likely graphical object which is a match. When the most likely match is located, the input data page containing the matched image is determined. The system then may determine the page of form data that applies to the input data page that contains the graphical object and the correct input data page and form data page are simultaneously displayed on the computer display screen. The graphical object may be an image, text data, a line drawing, etc.

  • Patent number: 6618815
Abstract: Apparatus for synchronizing time-of-day events across a plurality of neighboring processing nodes organized in a distributed parallel processing system with each processing node including a time-of-day (TOD) incrementor. The TOD incrementor of each processing node is coupled to a local oscillator in the processing node running at a preselected frequency to increment locally the TOD incrementor. A controller determines one of the processing nodes as the master processing node by transmitting an initialization packet to the selected processing node, and transmits a set TOD service packet to the selected master processing node. The master processing node includes a broadcast generator that broadcasts TOD update packets to neighboring processing nodes. A register in the master processing node counts a multiple of the preselected frequency.

  • Patent number: 6611812
Abstract: A method to delivery encrypted digital content to a end user system for playing the content comprising the steps of: reading from a computer readable medium metadata which has previously associated with the content. A user selects from the metadata associated content to decrypt and the end user system establishes a secure connection with an authorization authority for decrypting the content. The end user system receives a secure container containing the decrypting key for decrypting at least part of the previously encrypted content as permitted. The system creates a secure container using the encrypting key from a clearing house, wherein the secure container has an encrypting key therein from the end user system; transferring the secure container to the clearing house for authentication of permission to decrypt the content.

  • Patent number: 6611778
Abstract: Apparatus and method for monitoring a system in which a fluid flows and which is characterized by a change in the system with time in space. A preselected place in the system is monitored to collect data at two or more time points correlated to a system event. The data is indicative of a system parameter that varies with time as a function of at least two variables related to system wash-in and wash-out behavior. A calibration map is made on a calculated basis with each pixel or voxel representative of a color hue indicative of wash-out behavior and a color intensity indicative of wash-in behavior. When a sastisfactory map is obtained, the collected data is processed on the basis of the map to obtain an image of the preselected place with each spatial unit thereof correlated with a color hue and a color intensity. Software and a data processing system are provided to develop the calibration map. The calibration map and image of the preselected place are also novel implementations.

  • Patent number: 6608364
Abstract: Semiconductor device comprising a metal circuit with two parts wound into spirals which are formed such that the branches of one of the parts and the corresponding branches of the other part lie on either side of a median longitudinal region and are symmetrical with respect to this region. A common junction connects the inner ends of the parts and lies across the median longitudinal region and the intermediate junctions between the branches of one of the parts pass above or below the intermediate junctions between the branches of the other part. A common external connection is connected to the common junction and separate external connection are connected respectively to the outer ends of the wound parts. • Patent number: 6601902
Abstract: A motor vehicle cockpit is prefabricated and contains a flat shaped piece serving as a mounting plate for a visible shell, a heating or air-conditioning system and operational elements. An impact protection is formed by a box-section of the motor vehicle body that extends under the front edge of the windscreen and a cross-member. The impact protection is completed by the flat shaped piece that couples to the box-section and the cross-member, preferably coupled with a linear introduction of force. In the event of a vehicle frontal impact, the flat shaped piece and coupled box-section and cross-member absorb the energy of impact.

  • Patent number: 6604072
Abstract: An audio signal is sampled and a frequency transform is performed on a succession of sets of samples of the signal to obtain a time dependent power spectrum for the audio signal. Frequency components output by the frequency transform are collected in frequency bands. More than one running average is taken of each semitone frequency band. When the values of two running averages of the same semitone frequency band cross, time information is recorded. Information about average crossing events that have occurred at different times in a set of adjacent semitone frequency bands is combined to form a key. A set of keys obtained from a song provides a means for identifying the song and is stored in a database for use in identifying songs.

  • Patent number: 6598766
Abstract: The invention relates to a ventilation device for a piston for a cartridge. The ventilation device includes a first piston part which rests sealingly against the cartridge wall and a second piston part, which forms a valve with the first piston part. The valve opens when a pressure is exerted on the rear side of the piston so that the air is trapped between the filling composition and the piston can escape. According to the invention, a filter section is provided in front of the valve, between the two piston parts, as seen from the flow path of the air through the valve. This filter section has at least one narrow channel which forms a penetration barrier for the filling mass and ensures that the valve remains dry and free of dirt.
