The alternating current source is in contact with at least one electrode at each pole, and the electrodes are in electrical contact with the electrically conductive medium. The electrodes are made of passive metals or passive alloys. The electrically conductive medium may be an aqueous solution or water. The system is preferably provided with a thermostat that disconnects the electrical power from the electrodes once a desired temperature has been reached.

The invention precisely forms a pole-tip assembly by milling a second structural element without irradiating a first structural element. The invention avoids irradiating the first structural element by placing a first marker element, which can be imaged and/or damaged, in the same layer of a multi-layer lithographically fabricated device as the first structural element. The marker element has a fixed spatial relationship to the first structural element.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for sensing angular displacement of a rotating object. A reference object is provided that maintains an independent angular reference. An angular displacement of the rotating object may be measured with respect to the reference object. The apparatus may include a turn sensor for measuring directional changes in the heading of the object, an angular compensator, and a servomotor for maintaining the turn sensor in a same angular position. The object may be a vehicle such as a boat, car, train, airplane or any other vehicle. The turn sensor is coupled to the servomotor that may be attached to a platform of the vehicle. As the vehicle rotates, the heading of the vehicle changes. The servomotor rotates the turn sensor housing to keep the sensor at the same angular position. The heading may be determined by measuring an angular difference between the position of the turn sensor in relation to the moving object.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope for observing and examining the fundus of the human eye. The ophthalmoscope of the invention integrates an electro-optic imaging system in the viewing optics of the ophthalmoscope. Advantageously, such integration permits the stereoscopic observation of the retina and choroid by employing radiation ranging from the near ultraviolet to the infrared, including the visible spectrum. A light source illuminates a desired portion of a patient's fundus and the radiation reflected in response to the illuminating radiation is brought to focus to produce an aerial image of the fundus. A pair of ophthalmoscope lenses then magnify and image the aerial image along two different optical paths onto imaging sensors, such as charge coupled devices (CCDs) and image cameras, or image tubes such as image intensifiers.

    Abstract: An interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG) system includes a fiber sensing coil and a semiconductor or rare-earth doped fiber light source emitting light with an associated light source intensity. The source has a front output and back output. An optical coupler is attached to the front output for receiving said light from said light source and the coupler creates two substantially equal intensity light beams for simultaneous transmission into the sensing coil said coupler attached to the coil. The fiber sensing coil supplies return light to the coupler from said equal intensity light beams and the coupler combines and interferes the return light into a combined light beam. An optical phase modulator has a phase modulation amplitude, and the modulator coupled to the coil. An oscillator is coupled to the modulator and produces a periodic voltage which controls the phase modulation amplitude.

The user terminal uses the parameters to retrieve supplemental materials from one or more databases. The user terminal plays the supplemental materials in conjunction with the broadcast material.

Otherwise, inactive controlled variables from the highest ranking class having inactive controlled variables are reactivated according to the same predefined priority order by setting their associated setpoints to the desired setpoint values.

    Abstract: The invention concerns the embodiment of drivers for panel loudspeakers. Panel loudspeakers working according to the principle of bending waves are already known in prior art. Said embodiment makes it possible to use conventional drivers (12) that can also be utilized in cone loudspeakers. A series of problem arise when the drivers (12) are to be integrated on or into the acoustic panel (11) itself. Said embodiment requires inter alia that the different components of the driver (12) be directly mounted on the acoustic panel (12). Hence, the invention aims at providing a driver for panel loudspeakers that can be connected with little complications to the acoustic panel (11) as a pre-fabricated component.

    Abstract: A magnetic induction drive for a rotatable driven member in a sealed housing, in particular, a shaft-mounted blade in a blender cup or a shaft-mounted blade in an ice shaver, uses a comparatively thin circular drive plate of a magnetizable material with circumferentially arrayed poles enclosed within a housing secured to a drive shaft. A brushless d.c. motor in a base separate from the housing has a rotor formed as an array of pie-shaped permanent magnet regions that interact with an electronically controlled, rotating electromagnetic field produced by a ring of stator coils. A second such permanent magnet is coupled to rotate coaxially and in unison with the rotor, with poles of opposite polarity aligned and adjacent one another. A steel disc is sandwiched between and bonded to the rotor and the second permanent magnet. The magnetic field (lines of flux) of the second magnet extends axially away from the rotor to induce magnetic poles of opposite polarity in the drive plate.

In an embodiment, the control unit includes a timing device for generating one of an initial set time period and a shortened time period, at the expiration of either of which the supply of power to the system is terminated. The control unit further includes a mechanism which can initiate the shortened time period in place of the initial set time period. The mechanism may be used to reset the shortened time period to its full duration, after an elapsed period, each time the mechanism is activated.
