Abstract: In the production of wire-wrapped pressure vessels and pipe the ends of the wire are anchored or spliced by welding the end hoop to the next adjoining hoop, while the stresses in those hoops subjected to welding are minimized by providing a greater wire density adjacent thereto and hence reduced tension in the welded hoops.
Abstract: A method of repairing erosion cavities in large steel articles, such as slag and cinder pots by employing a plurality of successive aluminothermic reduction reaction charges without using containment perimeters and without preheating the article. The resultant repaired article has a metallurgically bonded plug in the eroded surface.
Abstract: In the process of heat-treating the head of a railroad rail wherein the rail is stressed so that the head forms a convex arc of predetermined height, the arc height is decreased about 14% after about 10% of the rail head has been heated, and then the original arc height is restored when about 40% of the rail head has been heated and then again decreased when about 60% of the rail head has been heated, and then finally the original arc height is again restored while the last 10% of the rail head length is heat treated.
Abstract: A method of surface conditioning a stainless steel to remove oxides and imperfections therefrom whereby the steel is heated in a controlled atmosphere having an oxygen potential, (log P.sub.O.sbsb.2) between (-29,280/T) + 5.6 and (-27,840/T) + 8.1 where T is the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin.
Abstract: The discoloration or off-luster border area called "annealing border" which frequently forms on low carbon tin-mill gage steel coils during box annealing in commercial HNX atmospheres is prevented from forming by providing the steel with less than 0.25 wt. %, and preferably less than 0.20 wt. % free manganese in solid solution.

Abstract: A method of producing a refractory lining in a cylinder or tube by initiating an exothermic reduction reaction, such as an aluminothermic reduction reaction, within the cylinder and causing the reaction products to coat the interior of the tube substantially uniformly. The product of the method, a ceramic-or refractory-lined cylinder, is also disclosed.
Abstract: A process for producing a fully processed nonoriented silicon sheet steel having excellent magnetic properties in the rolling direction wherein a steel containing 2.0 to 3.5% silicon and 0.30 to 0.45% aluminum is hot rolled to hot band gage, pickled, and cold rolled with a two-step cold roll with an intermediate anneal such that the second cold roll effects a thickness reduction to 50 to 60%. The cold rolled steel is then decarburized annealed and final annealed according to conventional practices.
Abstract: A method of cladding copper or copper alloys to a steel substrate by an aluminothermic reduction reaction utilizing an exothermic reaction material which is principally a mixture of calcium-silicon alloy, aluminum, cupric oxide and a metal.

Abstract: A handling device for a circular saw blade has a lifting rod slidably mounted in a vertical cylinder with its lower end extending downwardly from the cylinder. A saw blade support is pivotally mounted on the bottom of the rod with its top pivotally connected to one end of a link. The other end of the link is pivotally attached to the cylinder. With all parts vertical and the top of the cylinder supported by a crane the saw blade in vertical position can be secured to the saw blade support. To move the saw blade to a horizontal position the crane lowers the cylinder until the rod is in its upper position and the saw blade support is in a horizontal position. A locking pin arrangement is provided to lock the parts in this position so that the crane can move the saw blade in a horizontal position.
Abstract: A process of making steel in an open hearth furnace utilizing an expendable tuyere inserted within the furnace tap-hole for injecting oxygen into the furnace charge to assist in oxidizing impurities from said charge.
Abstract: A method of repairing large castings, such as ingot molds and mold stools, by employing an aluminothermic reduction reaction without using containment perimeters and without preheating the casting. The resultant repaired article has a metallurgically bonded plug in the hole or eroded surface with a thick abrasion-resistant slag covering over the deposited metal.

Abstract: An austenitic stainless steel immune to stress-corrosion cracking and intergranular stress-corrosion cracking in both the annealed and cold worked condition. The steel consists essentially of 0.005 - 0.08% carbon, 0.01 - 0.04% nitrogen, 16.0 - 20.0% chromium, 8.0 - 10.0% nickel, and 3.5 - 5.5% silicon, to form a microstructure consisting of 7 to 45 volume % delta ferrite in an austenitic matrix. The steel is further characterized by exceptional resistance to pitting corrosion and intergranular attack and good weldability and hot and cold workability.
Abstract: A process for producing stainless steel whereby unrefined molten iron is partially refined by blowing oxygen therethrough to slag the phosphorus; removing the slag therefrom; adding chromium-bearing material to the metal and blowing with oxygen shielded with a protective jacket fluid to melt the chromium-bearing material; thereafter continuing the blow to refine the chromium-containing metal; and finally adding slag reducing agents and blowing with inert gas to reduce chromium from the slag, and remove dissolved gases from the metal.

Abstract: A process for producing grain oriented silicon sheet steel having excellent magnetic properties in which the manganese and sulfur contents are critically controlled so that the product of manganese content, in weight percent, times sulfur content, in weight percent, is within the range 0.0007 to 0.0012, and aluminum is added to the deoxidized steel just prior to teeming to minimize the formation of insoluble oxide precipitates within the body of the teemed steel, the amount of aluminum added being limited so as to avoid appreciable aluminum remaining in solution in the teemed steel. The slab resulting from the above steel can then be preheated to a temperature of 2,130.degree. to 2,390.degree. F prior to hot rolling without sacrificing magnetic quality.
Abstract: A method of producing steel by the bottom blown basic oxygen process in which the residual sulfur content is reduced to an exceptionally low level. The process comprehends a standard bottom blown basic oxygen steelmaking process incorporating the injection of a gas carrying particulate desulfurizing agent to desulfurize the steel while maintaining reducing conditions in the bath.
Abstract: A normalized, silicon-killed steel for service at temperatures up to about 1000.degree.F containing:0.15 to 0.21% carbon0.70 to 1.0% manganese0.15 to 0.30% silicon0.40 to 0.65% chromium0.45 to 0.60% molybdenum0.05 to 0.10% vanadium0.01 to 0.
Abstract: Nose-skulls which normally form in the nose section of steelmaking vessels such as the bottom-blown oxygen steelmaking vessel, are prevented from forming, or are removed after forming, by injecting oxygen into the vessel nose section to oxidize either the carbon monoxide gases formed by the steelmaking reaction, or a combustible fluid injected simultaneously with the oxygen, or bath.
Abstract: .Iadd.A torque balanced regular lay wire rope having from three to six strands spiraled together such that the angle of lay of the outer wires in each strand is at least two times greater than the angle of lay of the strands in the rope and said rope is in a stress relieved condition..Iaddend.
