    Abstract: A document imaging system includes means whereby a large number of anomalous condition indicators or flags that define anomalous conditions that may occur as a result of the operation of a document scanner and/or document processor. A computationally efficient subset of flags and flag combinations is defined, and these subsets of flags and flag combinations (system states) are related to a quantitative measure of the quality (degree of suspiciousness) of the related document images, the documents themselves, and units of work that contain a plurality of documents. The machine computation of quality is compared to a human perception of quality, and computational input parameters are adjusted to improve the match of computational quality to the human quality perception, thus teaching the machine to make proper determinations of image and document quality.

    Abstract: In a pulse width modulated read signal channel for an optical disk drive, a data-transition threshold is maintained for data detection by a threshold tracking circuit that estimates the amplitude centerline data-transition threshold from the most recent maximum and minimum values of the read signal waveform. To improve the accuracy of the response of the centerline estimator, the threshold is increased or decreased based on the phase error at each read signal transition through the data-transition threshold. In addition, defects in the optical recording media are detected, and a defect present signal is used to inhibit the transition phase error input to the centerline estimator. This prevents the estimator from moving the threshold to an incorrect stable level. In addition, the defect present signal boosts the error feedback in the centerline estimator. The estimator then more quickly follows the read signal waveform.

    Abstract: An actuator for a PCMCIA DASD incorporates a tie bridge for stabilizing the support arms of the actuator while at the same time not increasing the largest radial dimension of the actuator drive motor beyond that of the radial dimension for the exterior of the coil. The tie bridge is disposed above, below, or both above and below the coil of the actuator drive motor. This space otherwise unused is now advantageously utilized, while additionally creating benefits in the design and the operation of the DASD. A crash stop and latch surface are incorporated into the structure of one of the support arms supporting the coil in such a way that the forces encountered by the actuator upon forcible engagement with a rigid structure within the DASD housing are absorbed and thereby reduced to values less than critical failure values.

    Abstract: A digital storage system is disclosed in which a flying read/write head is loaded onto the surface of moving storage media with controlled velocity to avoid contact with the surface of the storage media. Head load velocity is detected by measuring the back EMF generated by the head arm actuator. Improved control and accuracy is obtained by breaking up the head arm actuator drive power into a series of pulses and measuring the back EMF induced into the low impedance voice coil of the head arm actuator in between pulses but only after the actuator current has been reduced to substantially zero in order to avoid interference by actuator current induced voltages.

One of the transceivers receives and retransmits signals in a clockwise direction around the ring; the other transceiver receives and retransmits signals in a counter-clockwise direction around the ring. The clockwise and counter-clockwise signals are superimposed on the ring but are isolated at the workstations by the duplex conversion device.

    Abstract: An improved storage device, such as a disk drive, for use in an array of drives. Each drive has logic and Exclusive Or calculation means. Data to be written is sent to the target disk drive from the host computer under a new command that instructs the target drive to generate part of the new parity, and may also identify the parity drive. The target device reads the old data from it's media, generates a parity syndrome, stores the new data and then initiates communication with the identified parity drive, instructing the parity drive to read the old parity and generate the new parity information from the parity syndrome and the old parity. The parity drive, after generating the new parity, writes the new parity onto it's media, all without further host or host I/O action.

    Abstract: In a buckle, the loose end of a belt is clamped by operation of a pivoted lever that is pressed down onto a base member, a lever belt gripping surface engages one surface of the belt and forces the opposite surface onto a resilient surface in the base member. Flexing of this resilient surface provides a force that secures the belt between the resilient surface and the belt gripping surface. The lever is mounted to the base member by a pair of internal, tapered pins. A pair of flexible mating tapered tabs on the lever mount the lever on the pins. Mating tapers lead or guide the pins to the location of lever holes, thus allowing the lever to be mounted on the base member. In another embodiment, one rigid tab and one flexible tapered tab are located on the lever for mounting the lever on the two pins. This one flexible tab leads or guides a mating pin to a lever hole, thus allowing the lever to be mounted on the base member. Mating snap means are provided to snap latch the lever to the base member.

    Abstract: A sensor for measuring moisture changes in soil and having an electrically insulating cylindrical body along which bare electrical conductors are placed. A transmitter produces constant alternating current which is supplied to the sensor. The voltage which this current creates in the soil is detected by the electrical conductors on the sensor and is fed to a receiver. The receiver consists of electronic circuitry for determining the necessity for allowing irrigation to occur, and if so, switches on a solenoid controlling the water supply. When the sensor indicates sufficient irrigation has occurred, the electronic controls switch the irrigation off. A tube sensor comprising rigid metal tubes of equal length and secured by end members such that no two tubes touch is also provided, for example to measure moisture content changes of any granular material.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a disk drive having a spindle motor, a disk that is rotated by the spindle motor, and a movable actuator arm that carries a read/write head. The head physically engages a parked, or home, position at the Inner Diameter (ID) of the disk when the spindle motor is not energized and the disk is stationary. The electrical energization that must be applied to the spindle motor in order to breakaway the head from the disk (i.e., the breakaway current), and the energization that is necessary to cause the motor to achieve a stable spinning state (i.e., the spin current) are monitored. Possible future failure of the disk drive is predicted as a function of any changes in these two electrical parameters, as these parameters may change over a period of time; i.e., may change over a number of disk drive stop/start events.

The data transfers are performed by a plurality of Burst Relaying Cascaders (32-i) which connect the plurality of switches (31-i). A similar interface connect each adapter to the switch. A set of address information is used by the system to route the data from the source adapter to the target adapter, allowing navigation among the intermediate switches. Each interface contains a table where the address of every adapter of the whole system could be constructed dynamically at each communication node configuration.

In this way, linear functions can be found to annihilate given sampled image data at a plurality of ranges, independent of the intensity of the light received from the object. A statistical detector is used to determine the closest associated range to the actual range of the point within the scene.

    Abstract: Apparatus for frozen patties wherein one wide and slow conveyor feeds a plurality of narrow and fast conveyors to spread out the patties prior to stacking. Each fast conveyor conveys a stream of patties to a stacking module, each module includes a vertically-extending stacking cylinder. Each stacking cylinder includes a vertically-movable plunger which decrements as a patty is added to the top of the cylinder. When a cylinder contains enough patties for a stack, a patty-blocking member blocks patties from entering that fast conveyor, and the plunger in that cylinder raises the stack vertically out of the cylinder to a horizontal stage platform. A pusher member pushes the stack off the plunger and onto the stage platform. Vertically-hanging spring leaves stabilize the position of the stacks on the stage platform. When a desired number of stacks have accumulated on the stage platform, the stacks are moved to a collection station.

This braking system is improved by incorporating an arrangement for allowing the skater to quickly attach or detach the end of the brake cable at the skate. Locking of the brakes to permit walking without rolling is obtained by incorporating a latch mechanism in the gripper handle. The gripper handle is storable by a snap-on type retainer for the belt or pocket of the user which permits the brake cable to move without unintentionally releasing the retainer from the person of the skater while avoiding kinking and twisting of the cable in response to the normal skating motions of the skater. Retention of the cable relative to the thigh of the user is realized by a belt or other attachment arrangement including a Velcro type of clip.

The plate (32) has projections (38, 40) which flatten the catheter (42) as the motor (10) rotates. A fork (43) held by a ball (44) prevents the plate (32) from rotating relative to the catheter. Friction on the walls of the catheter (42) is thus avoided and high infusion accuracy may be achieved.

Selective use of superconducting material improves the data interchange operating efficiency of the read/write head and its coils. Magnetic paths associated with head elements are confined and directed by superconducting material to produce compact data with minimal power requirements. Magnetic read/write heads containing Josephson junction or SQUID detectors and which are encased in superconductive material allow high density data recording and highly sensitive data detecting. Data density is also improved by selected application of superconductive material to magnetic read/write heads constructed for perpendicular recording.
