  • Patent number: 5168145
Abstract: Portable apparatus is provided for terminating a plastic fiber optic cable mounted in a terminal connector by melting the fiber ends to form a smooth, flat end surface on each. The apparatus comprises a housing having a pistol grip, a holder for positioning a connector with the fiber ends protruding therefrom, and a heater. A polished plate is mounted on a trigger-operated holder for movement between a biased position normally engaging the heater and a position engaging the fiber ends. A heater switch energizes the heater; a temperature detector senses when the heater has reached a predetermined high temperature and illuminates an L.E.D. The operator then actuates the trigger to move the plate into engagement with the fiber ends to melt them. When the plate has cooled to a predetermined low temperature, indicating that the fiber ends are solidified, the L.E.D. extinguishes and the trigger can be released. A spring then moves the plate back into contact with the heater and the connector can be removed.

  • Patent number: 5147217
Abstract: An electrical component package comprises an insulator housing of thermoplastic material having a hollow base and a cover. The hollow base supports and locates an electrical component longitudinally in a component cavity and holds and positions the component leads in terminal cavities at opposite longitudinal ends of the component cavity. Insulation displacement terminals are then inserted into the terminal cavities establishing electrical connections with the positioned component leads. The hollow base is then partially filled with a sealant material after which the electric component package is installed on a pair of electric cables by closing the cover to push the electric cables down into insulation displacement slots of the respective terminals.

  • Patent number: 5119455
Abstract: A connector system for operatively connecting the ends of two fiber optic cables together. A wall-mountable plate includes an elongated receptacle containing spaced through bores. The bores have opposed frusto-conical entry sections which are joined by a cylindrical central section. A terminal connector is mounted on the end of each cable and has spaced frusto-conical projections which end in cylindrical nose portions containing the ends of the fibers. The terminal connector projections are insertable through opposite ends of the bore into abutment of the nose portions at an interface location along a central portion of the bore. Lock tabs and shoulders on the receptacle and on one of the terminal connectors latch the connector within the bore, with the terminal being held without bias and against reverse movement out of that end of the bore. A collar is slidably mounted on the other terminal connector, with a spring captured between the connector and the collar for biasing them apart.
