  • Patent number: 8290524
Abstract: A method for maintaining a transmission during a channel fade is described. Data is transmitted on a first traffic channel associated with a first signal. A second signal with a signal strength that is greater than the signal strength of the first signal is detected. A transmitter is disabled if N2m is triggered. The triggering of N2m indicates the presence of a channel fade for a predetermined first time period. The second signal is monitored for a predetermined second time period. Data is transmitted on a second traffic channel associated with the second signal at the expiration of the second time period.

  • Patent number: 8265281
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate protocol address assignment using protocols compatible with specified domains for mobile devices. Devices can request wireless network access through a gateway, which can forward an authentication/authorization request to an authentication server. Upon successful authentication, the authentication server can transmit one or more domain identifiers related to the device or a user thereof. Using the domain identifier, compatible protocols can be determined for use in configuring the device for subsequent domain communication.

  • Patent number: 8254364
Abstract: A route protocol is established whereby a mobile device can communicate to a multitude of (receiving) base stations though a tunnel created through a serving base station. A message that includes a Route Creation Header can be transmitted by the mobile device to create the tunnel. The Route Creation Header is reviewed by the receiving base station while the mobile device is in a Waiting-To-Open State. Various errors might occur with respect to the Route Creation Header. These errors can be conveyed to the mobile device by base station by setting one or more error code fields. Once the errors are resolved, another attempt to create a tunnel with base station can be made, if desired.

  • Patent number: 8254927
Abstract: Softer handoff groups are provided utilizing fractional frequency reuse set, which can be managed by a single master sector that is part of the group. The group can based on handoff rules that can include a group indication by an access point or a group request by an access terminal. A terminal is provided functionality to select a softer handoff group, which can be indicated by an active set update. An access point can discontinue serving terminals by groups by reducing an active set size to one. Diversity can be provided such that if a transmission from one sector fades, the other sector can provide the transmission, mitigating loss of data. Thus, robustness against inadequate channel conditions can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 8213405
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate synchronizing timing among wireless nodes in a wireless communication network. A tracking wireless node can synchronize to a global positioning system (GPS) signal if available. Alternatively, the tracking wireless node can receive quality metrics related to one or more target nodes. The quality metrics can relate to parameters that can be utilized to evaluate the target node for timing synchronization. Based on the quality metrics, the tracking wireless node can select a target wireless node for timing synchronization. The tracking wireless node can subsequently synchronize timing with the target wireless node. In addition, the tracking wireless node can continually evaluate surrounding wireless nodes to detect whether other wireless nodes have higher quality metrics than the current target wireless nodes and can accordingly resynchronize with nodes having higher metrics.

  • Patent number: 8184611
Abstract: In the present invention, the slave base station attains synchronization with the reference base station through messages transmitted from and received by a mobile station either in the soft handoff region between the reference base station and the slave base station or within a range which allows the mobile station to communicate with the slave base station. When the mobile station is not in communication with both the reference base station and the slave base station, then the round trip delay between the mobile station and the reference base station is measured by the reference base station. The reference base station communicates the PN code used by the mobile station over the reverse link to the slave base station. The slave base station acquires the signal from the mobile station and determines when the signal from the mobile station arrives. The slave base station then makes an estimate as to the length of the delay between transmission of a signal from the mobile station to the slave base station.

  • Patent number: 8170572
Abstract: An access node, e.g., base station, determines a configuration of an end node, e.g., wireless terminal, intended to support a specific traffic flow and sends a configuration command to the wireless terminal. A base station may determine one or more parameters associated with classification, queue management, scheduling, and/or automatic repeat request, and then send a configuration command to the wireless terminal instructing it to implement a configuration operation. In some embodiments, a wireless terminal sets the value of an internal parameter to a value directly provided by the base station in a configuration command. In some embodiments, a wireless terminal determines and sets the value of an internal parameter as a function of information included in the configuration command from the base station.

  • Patent number: 8155620
Abstract: In a converged communication network, IP data packet services are provided by a core network to access terminals via radio access nodes (RAN). By positioning accounting report triggering closer to the usage, accuracy and comprehensive of accounting is achieved, which can also reduce overhead burdens on the core network. Additional responsibility is given to an access gateway (AGW) between an enhanced base station (eBS) of the RAN and the core network that can reduce the volume and increase the accuracy of accounting message traffic to an authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) server of the core network. The AGW informs the eBS of accounting rules to be used in making air link records that are merged and formatted in accordance with an accounting protocol for sending to the AAA server, to address duration and volume based accounting needs, postpaid and prepaid accounting types, and user, service and flow based accounting categories.

  • Patent number: 8155078
Abstract: A method for using Internet mobility protocols with non Internet mobility protocols is described. A first gateway node communicates with a second gateway node using a first protocol. The first protocol is a non Internet mobility protocol. A home address (HoA) for a mobile node is managed by the second gateway node. Updates regarding the location of the mobile node within a domain are received using a second protocol. The second protocol is an Internet mobility protocol. Intra-domain mobility for the mobile node is managed by the second gateway node using the second protocol.

  • Patent number: 8024003
Abstract: A communications device, e.g., a mobile wireless terminal, includes a plurality of antennas having different polarization directions. The plurality of antennas includes a first antenna and second antenna which are operated in a coordinated fashion. During reception a signal received via the first antenna is subjected to a phase shift operation before being combined with a signal received via the second antenna. During transmission a signal to be communicated is subjected to a phase shift operation and the phase shifted signal is transmitted over the first antenna while the non-phase shifted signal is transmitted over the second antenna. The amount of phase shift is a function of the difference in polarization directions between the first and second antennas. The novel antenna configuration facilitates the use of the horizontal polarization direction communications between the communications device and a base station without the need for directionally positioning one or more electrical antennas.

  • Patent number: 7898995
Abstract: In general, this disclosure is directed to establishment and release of a connection between a communication device and an access network. More specifically, the techniques of this disclosure are directed to determining when a data flow used for exchanging call control requests becomes inactive. For example, a communication device may dynamically adjust an inactivity timer threshold associated with the data flow used by applications to exchange call control messages when a new call control transaction starts or an existing call control transaction ends, e.g., by selecting a single inactivity timer threshold for the data flow to satisfy minimum connection requirements of existing call control transactions, recently ended call control transactions and the new call control transaction. The data flow is considered inactive when no applications send or receive messages via the data flow for a period of time that exceeds the adjusted inactivity timer threshold.

  • Patent number: 7894403
Abstract: Techniques for minimizing call setup latency are disclosed. In one aspect, a channel assignment message is sent with a flag to direct the use of previously negotiated service parameters. This aspect eliminates the need for service negotiation messages. In another aspect, a channel assignment message is sent with an active set identifier instead of an active set and its parameters. This aspect reduces the transmission time of the channel assignment message. In yet another aspect, call setup without paging is facilitated by a mobile station (106) sending a pilot strength measurement message between active communication sessions, such that a channel assignment message can be used for mobile station terminated call setup without the need for mobile station paging and related messages.
