  • Patent number: 6793898
Abstract: A plasma-based fuel reformer in which a fuel/air mixture is subjected to an electrical plasma arc that reforms the fuel/air mixture into a hydrogen-rich gas. The reformer includes a first electrode defining a reaction chamber and a second electrode axially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the first electrode. A plasma arc forms between the first and the second electrodes in the reaction chamber when an electrical voltage is applied. An insulator is positioned between the first and the second electrode to prevent the formation of a plasma arc between the first and the second electrodes except in the reaction chamber. Means for providing a fuel/air mixture to the reaction chamber and means for diverting the air flow into the reaction chamber so as to create a vortex-like flow of air in the reaction chamber are also included.

  • Patent number: 6706199
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for withdrawing and dewatering slag from a gasification system. In particular, the present invention relates to a conveying lockhopper and method of using the conveying lockhopper to collect slag and other waste byproducts from the gasifier of a gasification system. The conveying lockhopper is configured to receive slag from a gasifier, simultaneously extract and dewater the slag, and expel the processed slag directly into an awaiting container suitable for carrying the processed slag away. The conveying lockhopper generally comprises a housing with inlet and outlet valves to receive and expel slag, respectively. The housing is inclined at an angle typically between 5 and 60 degrees to the horizontal so that the outlet is at a higher elevation than the inlet. Inside the housing, an auger or similar conveying mechanism conveys the slag from the inlet towards the outlet while simultaneously dewatering the slag.

  • Patent number: 6550252
Abstract: A hydrotreated liquid contains volatile hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and contaminants such as hydrogen sulfide. An inert gas, preferably nitrogen, is used to strip volatiles from the hydrotreated liquid. This stripper gas is then added to fuel gas fed to a combustion turbine, where combustibles in the fuel gas and stripper gas are combusted. The stripping is at a pressure sufficient to allow the stripper gas, now containing hydrocarbons and hydrogen, to be added to the combustion turbine fuel without additional compression. This process allows for efficient use of the stripped combustibles, and the nitrogen added to the fuel, gas provides increased power generation from the combustion turbine and reduces NOx emissions.

  • Patent number: 6552355
Abstract: An optical leak detector for use with a cooling system is described. The optical leak detector includes a light source, a light detector, and a conversion device. The light source is optically coupled to the light detector by way of an optical path. The light detector generates an electronic signal in response to light received from the light source. The conversion device, which is attached to the light detector, generates an electronic signal in response to the amount of light received from the light source. This electronic signal can indicate if a leak has occurred in the cooling system by the traversal of a entrapped gas bubble across the optical path formed by the light source and the light detector.

  • Patent number: 6533925
Abstract: This invention involves heat integration of a solvent deasphalting process with a gasification process and an improved process for separating a resin phase from a solvent solution comprising a solvent, deasphalted oil (DAO) and resin. This improved process comprises heating the solvent solution so as to precipitate the resin from the solvent solution, and then separating the resin and some solvent from the solvent solution. This will produce a resin product and a mixture comprising the DAO and the remaining solvent. The DAO/solvent mixture is then boiled so as to vaporize a fraction of the solvent, with waste heat from a gasification unit providing the heat source for the boiling. The vaporized solvent is removed from the DAO/solvent mixture leaving a resin-free DAO product that contains any unvaporized solvent. The vaporized solvent is used for heating the aforementioned solvent solution and preheating the resin-free DAO/solvent mixture.
