  • Patent number: 6452538
Abstract: A low-cost satellite system and method for using it for continuously monitoring near space and providing real-time data, both astronomical and space-environmental, is described and claimed. Low cost is achieved by disposing outwardly facing active and passive detection means aboard telecommunications and other satellites, and providing data from such means to subscribers. The system and method enable practical means to monitor space for approaching foreign bodies, providing high quality information for e.g., underfunded educational institutions while making enhanced use of geostationary orbits, a scarce resource, among other benefits.

  • Patent number: 5439465
Abstract: According to the present invention a bone compression or distraction surgical tool is provided, which comprises: a male threaded shaft that extends through a housing having a relatively long slot running parallel to the shaft from a first end of the housing and a relatively short slot running parallel to the shaft from a second end of the housing, these slots being in line with one another; a fixed arm having on one end an internally smooth sleeve, which surrounds the shaft, said arm extending through the short slot; a movable arm having, on one end, a female threaded sleeve, which surrounds the shaft and engages the male threads thereof, and extending through the long slot; and a handle for rotating the shaft, the rotation of which moves the movable arm via the threaded connection. Both the fixed arm and the movable arm have a hole for attaching surgical pin apparatus at the end of each arm as well as to the bone ends so the bones may be moved as required by the movement of the movable arm.

  • Patent number: 5004534
Abstract: The invention describes a catch basin having an inlet zone and an outlet zone separated by a vertical baffle wherein:(i) the vertical baffle is positioned in such a manner that liquid is permitted to flow from the bottom of the inlet zone to the bottom of the outlet zone;(ii) the vertical baffle provides an inner wall for the outlet zone; and(iii) the outlet zone has an outer wall parallel to the vertical baffle, the outer wall having an outlet port at its upper end, the improvement comprising:locating a series of at least three alternating baffles in the outlet zone, these alternating baffles being parallel, and bearing a spaced relationship, to each other; the even numbered baffles in the series being attached at right angles to the vertical baffle; the odd numbered baffles in the series being attached at right angles to the outer wall; and each baffle in the series extending just beyond the midpoint between the vertical baffle and the outer wall, the first baffle in the series being attached to the bottom
