Abstract: A personal cleansing composition in solid or bar form which is mild to the skin and very effective in removing dirt and grime from the body, particularly the hands. Importantly, such soap bars do not have a noticeable abrasive feel when in contact with the skin. Another feature is that the bar exhibits a so called “drag effect” when the soap bar is used for washing.
Abstract: A heating device for the vaporization of active substances, such as air freshener fragrances, disinfectants, sanitizing agents, insecticides and the like, in which a wick is immersed in a fluid active substance and heat is applied to produce vaporization. The heating is produced by one or more electrical resistance elements embedded in a circular heating ring which is hinged to move over the end of the wick and encircle it. The internal wires which carry electrical current from a source of electrical power are led through the hinged area for connection to the electrical resistance elements, and a feature of the invention is the protection of such wires as they pass through the hinged area.
Abstract: A highly efficient flame arrester adapted for use in preventing an external flame from backflashing upstream in a pipe, or a conduit, or a stream carrying a flammable substance. The flame arrester comprises a contained layer of nested ellipsoids formed from expanded metal sheets made from magnesium alloy foil. The arrester is useful in fuel tanks, combustion systems, sea-going tankers, hot water or space heaters, and the like.
Abstract: An expandable metal product for use in extinguishing fires and in the prevention of or protection against explosions. The product is a continuous sheet of material having discontinuous slits in spaced apart lines parallel to each other but transverse to the longitudinal dimension of the sheet. The invention is also directed to the expanded form of the product, either in sheets which may be used for preventing fires or explosion or in the form of shaped ellipsoids for use in a passive inerting system for fuel tanks, as flame arresters, as anti-explosion barriers, and as shields against mechanical impact.

Abstract: A highly effective module for preventing corrosion of oil well pipes and equipment and for preventing resulting fires and explosions. The module is a collar formed from slitted and expanded metal net and is adapted to fit in the annular space between the oil production pipe and the outer casing of the oil well, to prevent oxygen from the atmosphere from entering the annular space at the top of the well, and to exclude hydrocarbon vapors from the subterranean production zone from entering the annular space at the bottom of the well. The invention also relates to methods for extinguishing a burning oil well.

Abstract: A highly fire resistant construction board is produced by embedding a sheet of expanded metal net in a building board made from a water settable inorganic binder. In a preferred embodiment, the wallboard is made from a combination of gypsum, cement, and a particulate mineral filler such as perlite or vermiculite, and contains an embedded layer of expanded metal net made from a magnesium alloy.

Abstract: An effective method for diminishing hydrocarbon vapors in fuel tanks and thereby avoiding expensive, complicated and risky procedures for capturing purged hydrocarbon vapors during refueling. The method involves filling the fuel tank with multiple pieces of expanded metal net formed in the shape of ellipsoids, to inhibit the formation of hydrocarbon vapors and to promote condensation of such vapors as may be formed.
Abstract: Apparatus for slitting or cutting material comprises a driving roller 10 and a driven roller 12. Each roller 10 or 12 has on its periphery a plurality of ribs at a predetermined pitch and helix angle. The pitch of the ribs 18 on the driving roller 10 is smaller than the pitch of the ribs 30 on the driven roller 12, and the helix angle of the ribs 18 on the driving roller 10 is of opposite direction to, and of smaller magnitude than, the helix angle of the ribs 30 on the driven roller 12. The ribs 18, 30 cooperate to cut with a shearing action a web 16 of sheet material fed into the nip between the rollers 10, 12.

The arrester is useful in fuel tanks, combustion systems, sea-going tankers, hot water or space heaters, and the like.
Abstract: A highly effective barrier for protecting objects against focused beams of radiant energy. The invention has special applicability in a combat environment for protecting military equipment against destruction by laser weapons, or for thwarting detection of such equipment by reflected radar waves. The barrier comprises a layer of slitted and expanded metal foil, made from a non-ferrous metal having an absorptivity less than 3% and a thermal conductivity above 100 W/m/K, interposed between the radiant energy beam and the object to be protected. The barrier layer may be multiple sheets of the slitted and expanded metal foil, or a contained layer of nested ellipsoids formed from the expanded metal sheets.
