  • Patent number: 4089508
Abstract: A method of treating bituminous paving mixtures to reduce the amount of aggregate fines discharged into the atmosphere. Aggregate is fed into a charging end of an inclined drum mixer and is heated by a low-velocity gas stream to form steam from the moisture contained by the aggregate within a steam zone. Liquified asphalt is supplied to the aggregate in an asphalt injection zone as it moves downstream in the drum from the steam zone and coats the aggregate as it is tumbled and moved along the drum in a coating zone toward a discharge end. In the gas stream, the ratio of airflow into the drum mixer is accurately controlled with respect to the rate of fuel flow to a burner located at the charging end of the mixer, to consume during burner combustion all oxygen supplied by the airflow to produce a heated gas stream, thereby eliminating free oxygen from the interior of the drum mixer.

  • Patent number: 4085687
Abstract: A depository construction for receiving deposits at unattended banking equipment units in deposit-containing envelopes, and for issuing receipts for such deposits to bank customers. The customer activates the depository mechanism to initiate a deposit procedure by pressing a button, using a key or inserting a customer-identifying card at a banking unit. Activation of the mechanism opens an entry gate for a horizontal deposit entry slot to permit a deposit-containing envelope to be inserted into the slot, and energizes the drive mechanism of an envelope belt conveyor to transport the envelope through the mechanism. As the trailing end of the envelope passes an entry sensor, the entry gate is closed and a conveyor exit gate is opened. As the leading end of the envelope arrives at the exit end of the conveyor, an exit sensor energizes a printer beyond the exit end of the conveyor which stamps deposit data on the envelope.

  • Patent number: 4084149
Abstract: A sonar device for controlling movement of an object such as a transport drawer for delivery of material or things under security conditions to a customer. Examples of such transport drawers are bank drive-up window deal drawers or similar deal-type drawers for secure delivery and sale of pharmaceuticals fast foods, library books and packages of valuable things. The sonar device detects when a predetermined fixed distance has been established or occurs between a moving object such as a banking equipment deal drawer, and an object or body such as a vehicle being served by or using the drawer; and signals that the fixed distance exists, which signal may trigger stopping of a motor drive for the drawer to avoid collision of the drawer with the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4080704
Abstract: A method of making a multi-V-grooved sheet metal pulley from a flat sheet metal strip. The strip is passed through forming rolls which preform a plurality of generally V-shaped, transversely spaced, longitudinally extending grooves in a portion of the strip, and a generally flat hub wall flange in a transversely adjacent second portion of the strip. The hub wall flange portion of the strip then is notched to preshape the flange prior to circular forming the bottom hub wall of a pulley therefrom. The preformed grooved and notched strip then is severed into individual strips, each of which provides the material for a cup-shaped sheet metal pulley. Each strip then is passed between a pair of wrapping rolls which form the strip into a circular, preferably cylindrical configuration with the strip ends located adjacent to each other. The adjacent ends of the strip then are abutted and welded together, forming a cup-shaped pulley.

  • Patent number: 4065206
Abstract: A pair of transparent prismatic-shaped blocks are mounted within a protective housing which extends through an opening in an armored vehicle for safely viewing an exterior field of view from within the protected vehicle. Each of the blocks has a reflective surface and a viewing surface and are separated from each other by a void. The void is filled with an optical adhesive which remains soft and pliable and which bonds the pair of blocks together in this spaced relationship. The adhesive provides a shock isolation effect between the transparent block which is exposed to shock from enemy gunfire, etc., and the other block located within the vehicle. The cushioned adhesive-filled void reduces transmission of the shock waves between the blocks and prevents foreign objects from entering the void and distorting the optical viewing system.

  • Patent number: 4059246
Abstract: A pneumatic tube system for conducting banking transactions with a non-captive carrier traveling between a bank teller terminal in a two-tube carrier conveyor connected with a remote customer terminal with visual communication between the teller and the customer. The terminals and tube structure and their components are combined, interrelated and cooperatively arranged with simple and inexpensive construction to provide quiet and reliable operation. Prior complex carrier delivery and dispatch holding and release devices and blower operating timers and controls are eliminated. The operation of a blower located at the customer terminal, which supplies air for pressure or vacuum movement of the carrier in the two-tube system, is controlled by carrier arrival at or dispatch from either terminal. Noise emanating from air currents in the system is reduced by mufflers located at the terminals in the tube system. The carrier moves through one of the mufflers during travel.

  • Patent number: 4055976
Abstract: A method of making a dynamically balanced cup-shaped blank for use in the production of a V-grooved pulley from a flat sheet metal disc by flow forming the metal with an improved metal spinning roller construction. The disc is mounted on rotating die means between headstock and tailstock die forming assemblies of a spinning machine. A first spinning roller pressure shear forms and thins an intermediate annular portion of the disc along a conical surface of the headstock die to form a conical wall of the cup-shaped blank, with an unworked outer annular portion of the disc extending outwardly of the conical wall. A plurality of the improved rollers are moved axially along and parallel with the headstock die means in a single pass. Outer curved front end surfaces of the rollers lay the outer unworked annular portion of the disc along a cylindrical surface of the headstock die form without materially reducing the metal thickness to rough form a cylindrical wall of the cup-shaped blank.

  • Patent number: 4046469
Abstract: A reciprocating carrier-type photocopy machine having a photoelectric sensor for controlling a copy paper cut-off knife, to conform automatically the size of the copy paper to the size of the original document. A light emitter and photoelectric sensor are mounted beneath a glass platen over which a carrier, which contains the original document, moves for exposing the document to the reproducing mechanism contained beneath. An elongated rectangular mirror is mounted on the bottom surface of the carrier lid for reflecting the emitted light back to the sensor. The original document, when placed in the carrier, blocks the emitted light from being reflected from the mirror to the sensor until the trailing edge of the document passes the emitted light. The reflected light, upon passage of the document, then actuates the photoelectric sensor, which in turn actuates a solenoid of a copy paper cut-off knife to sever the copy paper from its supply roll.

  • Patent number: 4042144
Abstract: A sheet metal pull tab for easy opening cans of the full panel pull-out type which has a special and coordinated configuration, shape and contour of pull-ring, keyhole-shaped slot, nose and nose-forming walls which serve readily without tab failure to rupture the score line formed in a can end for removal of an end panel defined by the score line. The new pull tab structure imparts unusual overall strength to the pull tab that enables the pull tab either to provide greater strength when formed from the same gauge sheet metal or to provide the same strength when formed from lighter gauge sheet metal as compared with similar prior sheet metal pull tabs having the same outer contour; and also to provide such a pull tab structure which reduces the amount of metal, disregarding gauge, that is required to form the strong pull tab structure.

  • Patent number: 4041746
Abstract: A method of making a dynamically balanced V-grooved sheet metal pulley from a flat sheet metal disc by roller spinning and splitting tools. The disc is provided with a central hole for mounting the disc on rotating die means between first headstock and tailstock die form assemblies of a spinning machine. The spinning tool presses the disc against an end of a headstock die form and moves generally radially outwardly pressing a portion of the die against the end of the die to provide a circular hub wall. The spinning tool then moves in a series of passes along the headstock die form thereby rolling, forming and ironing the rotating outer metal portions of the disc against the die and forming an axially extending cylindrical side wall terminating in a radially outwardly extending annular flange of a cup-shaped stage blank. The flange then is trimmed to a predetermined length and to form a peripheral axially extending edge on the flange.
