  • Patent number: 4110175
Abstract: An electrodialysis method for deacidifying a feedstream comprises a first cell defined by anion-selective membranes and bounded by a pair of cells defined by the anion-selective membranes and a pair of cation-selective membranes. The solution to be treated is fed to the first membrane cell, a basic solution and a concentrating solution are delivered, respectively, to one of the adjacent cells, and an electric field is applied across the assembly. Hydroxyl anions from the basic solution pass into the first cell for neutralizing the acid hydrogen cation while the acid anion passes into one of the adjacent cells through which also flows the basic solution cation to maintain electrical balance.

  • Patent number: 4100679
Abstract: An articulator for dental models includes upper and lower clamp portions which are pivotally interconnected by a resilient universal hinge joint. Each clamp includes a pivotally mounted first elongate clip member for engaging one side of the respective upper or lower model portions and a second clip member for engaging the opposite side thereof. Resilient means biases the clip members toward each other for resiliently engaging the model portions therebetween. An adjustable stop mounted on the upper and lower clamp portions limits pivotal movement of the model portions toward each other.

  • Patent number: 4097039
Abstract: An apparatus for laying an elongate strip in substantially uniform layers and side-by-side rows includes a conveyer assembly for receiving a generally horizontally traveling material and for delivering the same to the upper end of a hollow, generally vertically extending, universally pivotable feed chute. The lower end of the feed chute is coupled to a first slider which is mounted for reciprocal sliding movement in a first horizontal direction on a second slider mounted in turn on the main frame for reciprocal sliding movement in a second horizontal direction normal to the first. A drive assembly reciprocates the first slider at a first rate of speed and simultaneously reciprocates the second slider in the second direction and at a slower speed rate for delivering the material in the desired pattern from the lower end of the feed chute. A speed matching assembly adjusts the speed of the strip laying apparatus to that of the strip received from other process machinery.

  • Patent number: 4097029
Abstract: An open-topped vessel for converting molten ferrous metal to steel is pivotal about a horizontal axis and has bottom tuyeres for blowing oxygen or other gases upwardly through molten metal. An enclosure at least partially surrounds the vessel and cooperates with a smoke hood to prevent the escape of pollutants when the vessel is in its vertical position. A pair of access doors are provided for closing an opening provided in the enclosure laterally of the vessel tilt axis. The doors are mounted for movement in opposite directions on roller support means external of the enclosure and an auxiliary smoke hood is mounted in the enclosure above the opening for capturing pollutants when the vessel is tilted toward said opening for being charged.

  • Patent number: 4085924
Abstract: An open topped, refractory lined metallurgical converter vessel has a metallic shell. A cooling jacket is affixed to the frusto-conical nose portion of the shell and comprises a plurality of right angle members affixed to the shell in a side-by-side relation and extending generally in the axial direction. The members have their edges affixed to the shell surface to form a flow passage therewith. A manifold pipe extends partially around the vessel and is connected to all of the flow passages except for those above and adjacent to the tap nozzle which are connected to a drain manifold. Plate sections are affixed to the upper end of the angle members and to the shell to define a nose cooling ring which is connected to the upper end of each angle section to define a return flow path for cooling water. Baffles are disposed in the nose cooling ring adjacent the margins of the angle members which are connected to the drain manifold to insure filling of the system.

  • Patent number: 4082616
Abstract: A vapor compression distiller having a shell for enclosing a generally horizontal heat exchange tube bundle having one end connected to a steam chest and its other end connected to a condensate collecting chamber. A vapor compressor has its inlet connected to the shell and the outlet to the steam chest. The shell includes a pair of spaced apart wells at its lower end which are interconnected by a pipe connected below the expected level of liquid in each well. A half partition extends across the lower end of the vessel and between the wells to divide the lower portion of the vessel into two sections which are in communication across the upper end of the vessel. One well is connected to receive fresh feed liquid and the other includes a density sensor to discharge a portion of the concentrate to therein maintain a desired concentrate level and each well is connected to a spray nozzle manifold disposed in its respective shell section.

  • Patent number: 4081269
Abstract: A pair of metallurgical vessels are each coupled by a gas collecting hood having a movable skirt to a gas cleaning system which includes an exhaust fan and a quencher and scrubber each having flow varying means. Each vessel is surrounded by an enclosure having an access door toward which the open upper end of the vessel may be tilted for receiving a metal charge. A secondary gas collecting hood is disposed in each enclosure above the access door for creating an indraft when the door is open. A valve system permits the selective connection of the secondary hood of one enclosure to the fan of the other to increase the indraft during furnace charging, sampling and pouring.

  • Patent number: 4080130
Abstract: In a process and a machine for moulding ceramic articles, the provision of a substantially moisture impervious foil between the mould surfaces and the clay blank and the disposal of the foil after its use as a waste by-product. A foil exhibiting predominant plasticity rather than elasticity is selected to secure effective operation of the invention. The clay blank is extruded in strand form at a rate of extrusion which is independent of the rate of feeding clay blanks intermittently into the mould and a temporary storage station provides buffer capacity between the extrusion and moulding steps. The machine has structure adapted to achieve this operation.

  • Patent number: 4061318
Abstract: An open-topped, refractory lined converter vessel has a plurality of tap openings and is supported on a trunnion ring by means of an adapter which is coupled to the vessel mounting brackets. A plurality of retention members are supported in the trunnion ring for vertical movement into and out of equispaced openings in the trunnion ring top flange and the adapter. A plurality of releasably engagable key members are adapted to engage the adapter and the pins for securing the adapter to the trunnion ring. A plurality of bottom brackets are slidably mounted on the trunnion ring for movement into and out of engagement with the vessel for additional support when the latter is tilted. A lift mechanism is provided for elevating the vessel and rotating the same to an alternate position whereupon after reconnection, a different one of the tap openings is positioned to have molten metal poured therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4059031
Abstract: A method and apparatus as disclosed, to produce a work piece, for example -- a twist drill or the same with inside cooling channels by means of a core matrix or core pins incorporated with the deforming pass, instead of using fusable metal filling. The points of the core matrix or core pins are located in the narrow pass of the forming caliber and remain fixed until the work piece is processed. At the end of the forming process, the work piece with its inside, open cooling channels, is expelled and a new operation starts.
