  • Patent number: 6270650
Abstract: A wet oxidation/reduction electrolytic cell, system, and method for the remediation of contaminated water is disclosed. A porous electrode of large surface area produces powerful oxidizing agents in situ without having to add any reagents, oxidizers, or catalysts to the water to be treated. Further, by the appropriate selection of electrode material, organic contaminants may be absorbed onto the surface of the electrode and subsequently oxidized to provide a dynamically renewable porous electrode surface. Flow rates, and power requirements may be tailored to the specific moieties to be removed, thus allowing local treatment of specific waste streams resulting in direct discharge to a publicly owned treatment works (POTW) or surface water discharge. A novel feature of this invention is the ability to remove both organic and metal contaminants without the addition of treatment reagents or catalysts.

  • Patent number: 5808866
Abstract: The present invention relates to the packaging of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) electronic modules and equipment for use in harsh military or commercial environments. The ruggedized container of this invention is a light-weight container weighing less than half of the weight of commercially available containers having similar functionalities and which is intended for use in similar harsh environments. The reduced weight and size of the ruggedized container of this invention are consistent with size and/or weight critical applications such as transport of portable flight line testers, submarines, space craft, air craft, and the like. The ruggedized container of this invention, comprises five major components: a transit case, a card cage, a vibration isolator assembly, cooling system, and power supply. Each element of the chassis is individually enhanced for size and weight.

  • Patent number: 5807977
Abstract: This application is directed to novel fluorinated polymers and prepolymers derived from mono-substituted oxetane monomers having fluorinated alkoxymethylene side-chains and the method of making these compositions. The mono-substituted fluorinated oxetane monomers having fluorinated alkoxymethylene side-chains are prepared in high yield by the reaction of a fluorinated alkoxides with either 3-halomethyl-3-methyloxetane premonomers or aryl sulfonate derivative of 3-hydroxymethyl-3-methyloxetane premonomers. Preparation of a mono-substituted 3-bromomethyl-3-methyloxetane premonomer via a simple, high yield process amenable to commercial scaleup is also disclosed. The fluorinated oxetane monomers of this invention can be readily homo/co-polymerized in the presence of a Lewis acid and polyhydroxy compounds to obtain hydroxy-terminated polyether prepolymers having fluorinated alkoxymethylene side chains.

  • Patent number: 5535591
Abstract: Underground powerplant system for the generation of energy, in particular electrical energy, comprising a coal fired steam generator, whose steam drives a turbine which delivers electrical energy. The coal-fired steam driven electrical generation system of the invention is installed underground in a coal mine. Waste fly ash (with or without sorbent) bottom ash and slag can be disposed in the abandoned or exhausted mining area. Ambient mine water can be employed in one or more of the process operations.

  • Patent number: 5501841
Abstract: A connection type fluid transfer and treatment system apparatus and method for efficiently and continuously executing transfer and treatment of small or micro amounts of sample solutions without substantial transfer loss, which includes a first microsolution reaction microtube having one open end and a second closed end, a second microsolution target microtube having substantially the same shape as the first microtube also having one open end and one closed end, and a connector for connecting together the open ends of the first microtube to the open end of the second tube. The connector includes a foramenous membrane support, which removably receives chemically or biologically treated membranes for applying a predetermined treatment to a solution while passing the sample solution from the first microtube to the second tube. Alternately, a "single use only" connector having disposed therein a membrane pretreated with a quantitative amount of reagent may be used for certain treatment operations.

  • Patent number: 5466035
Abstract: The invention relates to an improved vehicle bodywork for a passenger car with a bearing structure of light-metal extruded sections connected together by cast light metal joining elements. The joining element is disposed on the A pillar assembly and is fitted between a downward sloping forward roof pillar and a vertically oriented forward door pillar and holds an extruded section front end fender brace which extends outwardly therefrom towards the front end of the vehicle. According to the invention, a portion of the outer profile of fender brace conforms to the cross-sectional shape of a surrounding fender panel connected thereto. In this way, the space beneath the fender panel is used to increase the cross section of the fender brace and hence increase rigidity. In a preferred embodiment, the fender brace is L-shaped in cross section having two approximately rectangular hollow-chambers including an outwardly disposed vertical hollow-chamber area and laterally inwardly extending horizontal hollow-chamber.

  • Patent number: 5458396
Abstract: A convertible motor vehicle with at least one seat having an extendable roll bar incorporated into an upper portion thereof. In one embodiment the roll bar forms part of the headrest of the seat in a retracted rest position and is automatically extended upward from the headrest into a locked, extended operating position. The extended roll bar cooperates with the reinforced framework of the backrest of the seat which is mounted to the vehicle chassis in the conventional manner to provide a sufficient structural member to support a vertically downward impact load on the extended roll bar that occurs when the vehicle rolls over. Known motion sensors are used to trigger the roll bar and cause a release from its rest position to its operating position. In an alternate embodiment of a seat without a headrest, the roll bar forms an upper portion of the backrest of the seat while in its rest position and extends upward into its operating position in the same manner as the headrest embodiment.

  • Patent number: 5454621
Abstract: The invention concerns a passenger car with longitudinally adjustable front seats which slide back and forth along inner and outer seat rails made of steel and with side door sills made of light-alloy extruded sections to which front and rear mounting brackets for the outer seat rails are welded. In order to obtain an additional, interlocking joint, the mounting brackets are designed with an upwardly extended lip which is receivingly engaged within a downwardly facing groove provided in a hook-like extension of the door sill extrusion.

  • Patent number: 5401308
Abstract: The addition of from about 0.1 to about 25 parts by weight of quebracho per 100 parts of bitumens (particularly asphalt), coal tar, or other high boiling tars containing mixtures of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons modifies the characteristics of the treated product to enhance its performance as hot-melt adhesives, coatings, sealants, roof-coatings, and road-coatings as compared to the base bitumen. The improved characteristics obtained by the addition of quebracho include: increased softening point, lower penetration number, and higher viscosity. The quebracho may be mixed directly with the tars or put into a water solution, using sodium hydroxide if necessary, and then added to hot tars with the water being driven off.
