Patent number: 4529273Abstract: A passive (self-pumped) phase conjugate mirror uses a third-order nonlinear polarization medium, either of the refractive type (effective nonlinear) or the actual nonlinear type, with an optical system of one or more mirrors to reflect back through the medium a coherent incident beam diffracted by the medium. With two mirrors, they may be aligned to form a linear optical cavity containing the nonlinear medium, or they may be so oriented on one side of the medium that the incident beam transmitted through the medium is reflected back through the medium at an angle with the incident beam, and diffracted light from the incident beam is reflected back through the medium in the opposite direction coincident with the incident beam. A passive phase conjugate mirror may replace an end mirror of an optical cavity for a laser gain medium. Phase distortions of the laser beam in the laser cavity are corrected by the passive phase conjugate mirror.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1982Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Mark Cronin-Golomb, Baruch Fischer, Jeffrey O. Patent number: 4527163Abstract: A microstrip cylindrical antenna comprised of two concentric subelements on a ground cylinder, a vertically polarized (E-field parallel to the axis of the antenna cylinder) subelement on the inside and a horizontally polarized (E-field perpendicular to the axis) subelement on the outside. The vertical subelement is a "wraparound" microstrip radiator. A Y-shaped microstrip patch configuration is used for the horizontally polarized radiator that is wrapped 1.5 times to provide radiating edges on opposite sides of the cylindrical antenna for improved azimuthal pattern uniformity. When these subelements are so fed that their far fields are equal in amplitude and phased 90.degree. from each other, a circularly polarized EM wave results. By stacking a plurality of like antenna elements on the ground cylinder, a linear phased array antenna is provided that can be beam steered to the desired elevation angle.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1983Date of Patent: July 2, 1985Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventor: Philip H. Patent number: 4526216Abstract: An insert is provided for a liquid inlet at the top of a tank not having a fill pipe for preventing liquid from a nozzle spout of a diameter greater than a predetermined dimension from filling the tank, and allowing liquid from a nozzle of smaller diameter to fill the tank to very near the top. The insert has a mouth with a wide opening at the top and an opening at the bottom just large enough to receive a spout having that predetermined diameter. A throat having an internal diameter slightly greater than that predetermined dimension extends from the bottom opening. A valve closes the throat under the force of a spring and a grid prevents the nozzle spout from being inserted past the end of the throat. Connected to the valve is a structure that is engaged by the nozzle when said spout is inserted into the throat to open the valve and permit liquid from the spout to pass into the tank.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1983Date of Patent: July 2, 1985Assignee: Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A.Inventor: Leo C. Patent number: 4522141Abstract: An ice lubrication system for easing the passage of a ship through ice laden waters. A pressurized flow of water passes through a nozzle into the inlet of a mixing chamber comprising a venturi where gas from a gas manifold is mixed with the water. The effect of the venturi is to first cause the gas to mix into the water flow and, after passage of the flow through the venturi, to cause the gas to emerge from the water. A frothy combination of gas bubbles and water is thus created which is discharged through openings in the ship's hull below the waterline. Once discharged, the gas and water combination rises up the side of the hull to provide separation and lubrication betwen the hull and floating ice.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1982Date of Patent: June 11, 1985Assignee: Omnithruster, Inc.Inventor: Charles M. Patent number: 4520537Abstract: A gold jewelry clasp assembly is described, which includes a keeper for receiving a catch and retainer, wherein all of the elements are constructed to operate reliably over a long life time. The catch is formed of a tempered gold strip bent at its middle to form a folded leaf spring, and with one end of the strip bent into a loop around a pivoting wire retainer. The bending avoids a gold soldering operation on the strip which could degrade spring temper, and also permits welding of the retainer wire ends prior to attachment to the catch to facilitate heat sinking that minimizes loss of spring temper of the retainer. The keeper is formed of a drawn tub-shaped gold frame, with the edge that forms the opening of the tub-shaped frame, being cut away at opposite ends to leave a pair of projecting lips on opposite sides. A gold cover strip covers the opening of the frame, and the cover strip has a recess on either side that receives the frame lips in an interference fit.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1979Date of Patent: June 4, 1985Assignee: Harry Wolf & SonsInventor: Sioma Valikov

Patent number: 4510105Abstract: An improved method is described for molding an article having a core of foam and a surface reinforced by fiberglass cloth or the like, which enables more rapid setup for molding and which creates a stronger and more uniform article. The method includes laying several layers of dry tissure paper on the walls of the mold to form a first layer, laying dry fiberglass cloth over the first layer to create a second layer, and laying a sheet of dry tissue paper over the second layer to form a third layer. Foamable plastic is poured in the mold over the three layers and the mold is closed. As the plastic foams and expands, it first presses against the third layer to press it and the underlying first and second layers firmly against the mold walls to thereby position them evenly at the outer portion of the mold cavity. The foam material then penetrates the tissue paper of the third layer, the openings of the cloth of the second layer, and some of the layers of tissue paper of the first layer, before finally hardening.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1982Date of Patent: April 9, 1985Inventor: Kent Sherwood

Patent number: 4506558Abstract: An injector is described for injecting a sample at a high pressure into a chromatographic column, which avoids sample dilution that is characteristic of bypass loop injectors, and which also avoids significant flow interruption into the column that is characteristic of prior non-bypass injectors. The stator includes pump and column ports with openings (34a, 42a, FIG. 4) at the stator-rotor interface, where the openings are spaced by a small angle (m) of less than 10.degree. from one another. In the load position, a channel (50) formed in the interface surface of the rotor, which connects the pump and column openings in the load position, extends away from the pump opening by an angle (n) which is many times greater than the angle between the pump and column openings. As a result, as the injector is turned toward the inject position, the channel (50) continues to connect the pump and column openings until the rotor is close to the inject position. As the inject position is approached (FIG.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1983Date of Patent: March 26, 1985Assignee: Rheodyne IncorporatedInventor: Stephen R. Bakalyar
