  • Patent number: 5400393
Abstract: A digital telephone answering device (DTAD) that allows messages to be forwarded to certain internal mailboxes. Random access memory (RAM) is flexibly and dynamically controlled by a microprocessor or controller. Audio signals in the form of voice messages are digitized and stored in the RAM. Messages can be sorted and allocated to specific mailboxes and made retrievable by pressing a button assigned to that mailbox. Messages can also be moved or re-assigned from a common message area to a certain mailbox or mailboxes. Outgoing messages are also stored in RAM and can be of sufficient number to have an outgoing message correspond to each incoming message storage area. The normal message recording and message playback functions of the DTAD may be activated after the call has been answered on the receiving side.

  • Patent number: 5398742
Abstract: A tire structure includes bag-like members capable of expansion and contraction and which are buried in anti-slip grooves in the tire surface, and an air supply coupled to the bag-like members for supplying air to inflate the bag-like members to cause them to expand and project outwardly of the tire surface. The air supply may include stems coupled to an air source in the wheel part of the tire structure. Normally, the tire structure can be run as a usual tire. When running on a frozen road or the like, the tire structure permits functions and effects like a tire with a chain coupled thereto to be obtained by a simple operation to inflate and expand the bag-like members to cause them to project outwardly of the tire surface, and without need of any cumbersome operation of mounting a chain to the tire.

  • Patent number: 5399316
Abstract: A sample solution is dripped on an injection region with a pipette. The sample solution immediately spreads in a reaction region by a capillary phenomenon. The sample solution is left for a predetermined period of time to bind a biological associated material in the sample solution with a specific affinity material bound on the inner surface of the reaction region. After the reaction, the outer surface portion of a support member is pushed against a reaction vessel main body to deform the support member, thereby bringing the sample solution into contact with a water absorbent member at a removal region. The sample solution is absorbed by the water absorbent member and is removed from the reaction region. A cleaning solution is dripped on the injection region in an appropriate amount to perform B/F separation and is allowed to spread in the reaction region. The cleaning solution is absorbed and removed by the water absorbent member. The biological associated material bound to the reaction region is assayed.

  • Patent number: 5399745
Abstract: There are disclosed a process for producing methyl formate by dehydrogenating methanol in liquid phase in the presence of a solid catalyst and a process according thereto wherein a gas (N.sub.2, H.sub.2, CO, etc.) is continuously blown into the liquid phase from outside, and the gas along with the reaction product are continuously withdrawn outside the reaction system from the gaseous phase directly or through a cooler. By virtue of the liquid-phase reaction in the above process, as compared with the conventional gaseous phase reaction, the reaction temperature can be lowered, the reaction gas rich in the objective methyl formate rather than methanol is obtained by continuously withdrawing the resultant methyl formate outside the reaction system and accordingly, a single pass yield higher than that at the thermodynamical equilibrium-value is assured, whereby energy saving is made possible.

  • Patent number: 5398542
Abstract: Direction of travel from a wave front in a pipeline is determined with two pressure sensors spaced relatively near to each other so that the site from which the wave front emanated is not located therebetween. For each sensor, a determination is made as to whether a detected signal has exceeded a negative or a positive threshold. In addition, the sensor outputs are subtracted from each other to determine which sensor detected the wave front first. Combining the resulting signals yields information on the nature of the wave front and its direction of travel.

  • Patent number: 5400236
Abstract: An invertor-controlled power unit includes a direct current power source circuit, an invertor circuit, and a pair of output lines. A waveform of voltage appearing between the output lines is detected. There is generated a target output waveform signal having a predetermined frequency. The target output waveform signal is converted into a control signal, which is then supplied to the invertor circuit. The invertor circuit effects switching control of an output from the direct current power source circuit in response to the control signal. There is detected an overvoltage state of the direct current power source circuit. The generation or supply of the control signal is inhibited while there is detected the overvoltage state of the direct current power source circuit. The control signal starts to be supplied again to the invertor circuit at a timing at which the detected waveform of the voltage between the output lines crosses a substantially zero volt level.

  • Patent number: 5397076
Abstract: A pre-prepared paster pattern designed to effectively create a splice between the first web of a first roll of paper feeding into a high speed printing press and the leading edge of the second web of a second replacement roll of paper. The paster pattern comprises a first extensive paper layer having two generally triangularly shaped portions adapted on a first side to be adhesively connected to the end portion of the replacement roll and to a web portion of the replacement roll spaced from the end portion. An array of pressure sensitive adhesive layers are applied to the second and opposing side of the first paper layer and are adapted to adhere to the first web of the first roll while the first web is being fed into the high speed printing press. • Patent number: 5398172
Abstract: A lighting device for a vehicle includes a housing, an inner lens molded of a transparent colored material that is fitted to an opening portion of the housing; and an outer lens molded of a transparent colorless material; and a left-hand inner wall surface of the housing is dimensioned to have a length different from that of a right-hand inner wall surface of the housing. To prevent the presence of a colorless part of the inner wall surface from appearing to have a longer length, the foregoing colorless part of the inner wall surface is covered with an extension portion of the inner lens which comes in close contact with the inner wall surface. To improve the appearance of the lighting device, all surfaces associated with the inner lens, such as a part of the inner wall surface having a greater dimension a lower inner wall surface; and an upper inner wall surface are coated with the surface material that corresponds with a material coated on the extension portion of the inner lens.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a process cartridge that incorporates a photoreceptor and a plurality of developing devices. The process cartridge is provided with a first driving shaft to drive the photoreceptor and a second driving shaft to independently drive the developing devices. When the process cartridge is mounted in the image forming apparatus which includes spaced apart first and second gears, the first and second driving shafts are coupled separately with the spaced apart first and second gears so that driving forces are separately transmitted to the first and second driving shafts. A flywheel is mounted on a third driving shaft that is coupled with the first driving shaft to drive the photoreceptor. Since the developing devices are constructed to receive a large number of different possible loads, the developers are placed in a condition where vibrations are created easily by the driving of the various possible loads.
