  • Patent number: 8326923
Abstract: A method, system, an apparatus are directed towards selectively prefetching content over a network. A request for a content object is received. The content object may comprise a link to another content object. A cachability measure for the link may be determined based on whether a plurality of previous requests for the link returned the other content object, an annotation in a link map, a probability of traversing the link, a network metric, or the like. A prefetchability measure for the link may be determined based on the cachability measure and/or another factor relating to the link. The other factor may be an annotation of the link indicating that caching the other content object will cause a related object to be uncachable. Based on the prefetchability measure, the other content object is selectively prefetched for subsequent provisioning and/or display.

  • Patent number: 8325567
Abstract: Provided is a thermally-assisted magnetic recording head capable of setting the near-field light (NFL-) emission point to be sufficiently close to the write-field-generating portion. The head comprises a magnetic pole, a waveguide propagating light, and a NFL-generator coupled with the light in surface plasmon mode. The NFL-generator comprises a propagation edge extending to the NFL-generating end surface, at least a portion of the propagation edge being opposed to the waveguide with a distance, and the magnetic pole has a surface contact with a surface portion of the NFL-generator including no propagation edge. Therefore, the distance between the magnetic-pole end surface and the NFL-generating end surface becomes zero. The propagation edge is not contacted with the magnetic pole. Accordingly, the surface plasmon can propagate along on the propagation edge without being absorbed by the pole. Thus, the NFL-emission point is ensured to be at the end point of the propagation edge.

  • Patent number: 8325568
Abstract: Provided is a thermally-assisted magnetic recording head with improved light density of near-field light (NF-light) with which a medium is irradiated. The head comprises: a magnetic pole; a waveguide for propagating light for exciting surface plasmon; a surface plasmon generator provided between the magnetic pole and the waveguide, coupled with the light in a surface plasmon mode, and emitting NF-light; and a clad portion provided at least between the waveguide and the surface plasmon generator and comprising a transition region in which a refractive index decreases along a direction from the waveguide toward the magnetic pole. The provision of the clad portion including the transition region enables improvement of the light density of NF-light due to the convergence of surface plasmon excited in the surface plasmon generator to predetermined locations, while avoiding the problem of temperature rise due to reduction of the volume of surface plasmon generator.

  • Patent number: 8326984
Abstract: A system, apparatus, and method selectively provides content compression to a client based, in part, on whether the network connection from the client is determined to be a high latency, low-bandwidth connection. The present invention gathers one or more network metrics associated with the connection from the client. In one embodiment, the metrics include estimated TCP metrics, including smoothed round trip time, maximum segment size (MSS), and bandwidth delay product (BWDP). These estimated network metrics are employed to make an application layer decision of whether the client connection is a high latency, low-bandwidth connection. If it is, then content may be selectively compressed virtually on the fly for transfer over the network connection. In one embodiment, the selective compression uses a content encoding compression feature of the HTTP protocol standard.

  • Patent number: 8325920
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system are directed towards employing transferable entitlements using EMMs for enabling a purchase of content using a mobile device, and redeeming for access the content using a different network device. An existing billing infrastructure may be used during a purchase transaction to identify the purchasing device. Upon billing authorization, a transferable EMM (XEMM) may be sent to the purchasing device. The purchasing device may then provide the XEMM to another network device. The other network device may send the XEMM to a redeeming service when requesting access to the content. Upon authorization, an EMM with an access key to the content may be sent to the other network device.
