Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring blood platelet contractility, hereinafter called a “retractometer” is disclosed. Also disclosed is a system apparatus and method for automatically measuring platelet contractility in a plurality of samples, having an array of retractometer units and an electronic solenoid valve controller to fully automate screening in clinical and research situations and save costs in labor.
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for the diagnosis and evaluation of stroke and stroke sub-type. A variety of bio-markers are disclosed for assembling a panel for such diagnosis and evaluation. Methods are disclosed for selecting markers and correlating their combined levels with a clinical outcome of interest. In various aspects: the invention provides methods for early detection and differentiation of stroke subtypes, for determining the prognosis of a patient presenting with stroke symptoms, and identifying a patient at risk for hemorrhagic transformation after thrombolyic therapy. Methods are disclosed that provide rapid, sensitive and specific assays to greatly increase the number of patients that can receive beneficial stroke treatment and therapy, and reduce the costs associated with incorrect stroke diagnosis.

Abstract: A design professional such as an interior designer, furniture sales associate or advertising designer or a consumer running a program at a client computer (i) interactively selects or specifies a background scene and furnishings or other objects, (ii) interactively previews these objects in a small low-quality perspective view image of the scene, and then (iii) utilizing the world wide web transmits the scene file to a server computer, (iv) this server then renders a typically larger high-quality version of the previewed scene, utilizing high-resolution objects to replace the stand-in objects used to render the preview image on the client computer, (v) which high-quality image is returned to the client computer for viewing. 3D models and related textures and maps are built for each object to be depicted in the virtual scenes.
Abstract: In electronic devices such as combination CD-ROM and MP3 recorder/players power is conserved by buffering audio or visual data in a solid state memory, preferably of the FLASH or DRAM type, before writing the data to a rotating hard disk. Alternatively, audio and/or visual data, including musical works and still pictures and video, read from a rotating hard disk may be buffered in the same solid state memory while being played. By rotating the hard disk drive only for transfer of audio-visual data, which is normally compressed, in blocks, the hard drive may be stopped both during relative lengthy accumulation, and/or use, of this data, and energy conserved.

Abstract: A selected drill or driver bit [“d—d bit”] (i) is at a first time selected from a magazine and mounted to a rotary tool, normally an electric drill, and (ii) is at a later time removed from the tool and returned to the same magazine, each in a one-handed operation totally without manual contact with any of the drill or driver bit, a holder of the d—d bit, or any chuck of the tool. Coaction is realized between (i) a d—d bit holder having a sliding sleeve releasibly holding a d—d bit, and (ii) a d—d bit dispenser having multiple bores of complex interior contour each relieved to one side in a complex contour defining a side entrance and extraction channel. The d—d bit holder (and its mounted d—d bit) is (i) entered downward into a bore of the d—d bit dispenser, and (ii) plunged full to the bottom, whereupon (iii) the d—d bit is released while (iv) the d—d bit holder is withdrawn upward through the channel.
Abstract: Both intensity(ies) and color(s) of fluorescent emissions appearing within a well-balanced multi-color fluorescent composite image, normally made simultaneously along each of multiple axis of a macroscopic specimen such as a mouse, are calibrated. The image is so calibrated in all its multiple intensity-adjusted fluorescent colors as may variously appear in any and all of the image's regions by one or more planar elements each having different regions variably fluorescing at predetermined intensities and, optionally also, at multiple different colors. The resulting panoramic composite image of a fluorescing, and multiply-fluorescing, specimen in which image these calibration elements also appear contains a great deal of calibration information, optionally showing scales in any of dimension, overall brightness, color temperature and/or the separate emission intensities of, permissively, each of several separate differently-colored fluorescent lights.
Abstract: A design professional such as an interior designer running a browser program at a client computer (i) optionally causes a digital image of a room, or a room model, or room images to be transmitted across the world wide web to a graphics server computer, and (ii) interactively selects furnishings from this server computer, so as to (iii) receive and display to his or her client a high-fidelity high-quality virtual-reality perspective-view image of furnishings displayed in, most commonly, an actual room of a client's home. Opticians may, for example, (i) upload one or more images of a client's head, and (ii) select eyeglass frames and components, to (iii) display to a prospective customer eyeglasses upon the customer's own head. The realistic images, optionally provided to bona fide design professionals for free, promote the sale to the client of goods which are normally obtained through the graphics service provider, profiting both the service provider and the design professional.

Abstract: A waterproof cover for casts and/or bandages on limb extremities is formed as a thin-walled elastomeric water-impervious linear tube, preferably made of nitrile, open at at least one end. The cover stretches skin-tight over a limb extremity, and over any and all casts and/or bandages upon the limb extremity, so as to conform to a combined exterior contour of the limb and of any casts and bandages upon the limb. The cover circumferentially squeezes against the limb, sealing watertight both the limb and any casts and/or bandages upon the limb. The waterproof elastomeric tubular cover is comfortable, non-obtrusive, non-obstructive, and easily deployed, removed, and re-deployed. Preferred embodiments for use on the leg from the toes to the knee, and beyond to the thigh, range from 29 inches (73.5 cm.) to 41.0 inches (103.5 cm) in length, with a diameter at the ankle of 3.5 inches (8.9 cm); at the calf 5.0 inches (12.7 cm); and at the knee 4.5 inches (11.5 cm).
Abstract: A tool belt mounts receiver blocks, preferably of at least two types, permanently along its length. Each receiver block releasibly receives and engages an attaching block of complimentary configuration, the two blocks serving as a two-portion connector. Each attaching block serves to attach, or is integral with, (i) one of any number of tool holders of diverse configurations, each of which tool holders serves to support an associated tool, and/or (ii) a tool itself. The belt is preferably made from web fabric, the receiver blocks and attaching blocks from strong molded plastic, and the tool holders from leather, steel and like materials contoured and adapted to engage and hold portable tools including hand tools.
Abstract: A combination CD-ROM and MP3 recorder/player playing a CD-ROM decodes 16-bit ISO standard code words into an audio wave form converts this wave form to sound while encoding and digitizing the wave form into 24-bit MP3 format digital data. To conserve power the MP3 data is buffered in a solid state memory, preferably of the FLASH or DRAM type, before being written to a hard disk. Both reading of the CD/ROM and encoding the read contents as MP3 data, and interchange of MP3 data with other recorder/players, can be accomplished at greater than real-time play rates, permitting that, most typically, some 1200+ musical works can transferred expediently.

Abstract: The ullage space gases of a ship's ballast tanks (i) are depressurized to a pressure less than atmosphere—called an “underpressurized” condition—of most preferably about 14.7 PSIA or lower, simultaneously that (ii) they are inerted, preferably to <4% O2 and more preferably to <2% O2. Oxygen within the ballast water is rapidly, preferably within hours, substantially depleted, preferably to <1% PPM and more preferably to <0.6 PPM, by circulating these inerted ullage space gases through the ballast water as bubbles, removing oxygen from the ballast water more by outgassing than by diffusion. The rapidly de-oxygenated ballast water is preferably so maintained for the substantial portion of the ship's voyage, which is effective in killing most aerobic aquatic life within the ballast water.

Abstract: An output stage of a conventional Frequency-on-Demand electronic voltage regulator, such as a voltage regulator of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,642,033, is reconfigured as a bi-stable multivibrator, or flip-flop. An oscillator provides a reset pulse of pre-defined pulse width and pulse period to initiate an “on” period of the output stage; a conventional error amplifier synchronously switches the output stage “off” when a system voltage reaches a preset value. Voltage regulation by a constant-frequency, pulse-width-modulated, output signal is thus realized at reduced cost and complexity. Total capacitance between the gate-source terminals of a preferred MOS power output transistor serves to slow both negative- and positive-going output control signal transitions, introducing a minimum of electrical noise into the vehicle's electrical system.
Abstract: Neural networks are constructed (programmed), trained on historical data, and used to predict any of (1) optimal patient dosage of a single drug, (2) optimal patient dosage of one drug in respect of the patient's concurrent usage of another drug, (3a) optimal patient drug dosage in respect of diverse patient characteristics, (3b) sensitivity of recommended patient drug dosage to the patient characteristics, (4a) expected outcome versus patient drug dosage, (4b) sensitivity of the expected outcome to variant drug dosage(s), (5) expected outcome(s) from drug dosage(s) other than the projected optimal dosage. Both human and economic costs of both optimal and sub-optimal drug therapies may be extrapolated from the exercise of various optimized and trained neural networks. Heretofore little recognized sensitivities—such as, for example, patient race in the administration of psychotropic drugs—are made manifest.

Abstract: Nanoparticulate titanium dioxide coating produced by educing flocculates of titanium dioxide nanoparticles from a titanyl sulfate solution and dispersing the nanoparticles in a polar sol-forming medium to make a sol suitable as a coating usable to impart photocatalytic activity, U.V. screening properties, and fire retardency to particles and to surfaces.
