  • Patent number: 8031079
Abstract: A low cost, robust, wireless sensor system that provides an extended period of operability without maintenance is described. The system includes one or more intelligent sensor units and a base unit that can communicate with a large number of sensors. When one or more of the sensors detects an anomalous condition (e.g., smoke, fire, water, etc.) the sensor communicates with the base unit and provides data regarding the anomalous condition. The base unit can contact a supervisor or other responsible person by a plurality of techniques, such as, telephone, pager, cellular telephone, Internet, etc. In one embodiment, one or more wireless repeaters are used between the sensors and the base unit to extend the range of the system and to allow the base unit to communicate with a larger number of sensors.

  • Patent number: 8029530
Abstract: A separate deliverable embolic protection device filter that attaches to a helical coil at a distal end of a conventional guide, for use in a blood vessel when an interventional procedure is being performed to capture any embolic material which may be created and released into the bloodstream during the procedure. The device includes a filter assembly with a proximal end and a distal end, and a guide wire connector attached to the distal end of the filter assembly. The guide wire connector is able to couple with the helical coil of the guide wire. A restraining sheath placed over the filter assembly in a coaxial arrangement maintains the filter assembly in a collapsed position and delivers the filter assembly separately to the helical coil of the guide wire, and then the guide wire connector is joined to the helical coil. Alternatively, the guide wire can include a rotatable coil section forming a portion of the distal tip coil on the guide wire which is adapted to be coupled to the filter assembly.

  • Patent number: 8029558
Abstract: An improved stent design and stent delivery catheter assembly for repairing a main vessel and a side branch vessel forming a bifurcation. The stent includes rings aligned along a common longitudinal axis and connected by links, where the stent has one or more portals for aligning with and partially expanding into the opening to the side branch vessel. The stent is implanted at a bifurcation so that the main stent section is in the main vessel, and the portal section covers at least a portion of the opening to the side branch vessel. A second stent can be implanted in the side branch vessel and abut the expanded central section to provide full coverage of the bifurcated area in the main vessel and the side branch vessel. Radiopaque markers on the stent and on the tip of the delivery catheter assist in aligning the portal section with the opening to the side branch vessel.

  • Patent number: 8025647
Abstract: An introduction device for introducing an object into a vessel of a body comprises a tubular channel (15) and a dilator (11) carrying the channel. To keep the diameter of the body canal as small as possible, the wall thickness of the channel (15) is max. 0.06 mm. The channel (15) is made of a hard plastic material, such as polyamide or polyester, such that the channel (15) is not deformed by compression when the device is advanced in the body and the dilator (11) is retracted. Further, a tight fit on the dilator also prevents such compressions.

  • Patent number: 8026440
Abstract: The solar cell modular unit has a minimal number of components each of which are easily manufactured and which also have a relatively economical cost. It has a laminar substrate having an electrically conductive layer on its top surface that includes the printed electrical circuit. The middle layer is heat conductive and not electrically conductive. The bottom layer is made of thermally conductive material. A solar cell is centrally mounted on the printed circuit board. A base assembly covers the solar cell and it has a vertical tunnel extending from its top surface to the solar cell. An elongated sun shield has an aperture in its top panel that aligns with the tunnel of the base assembly. The sun shield snap-locks onto the top of the base assembly. A secondary optical element telescopically mates with the aperture in the sun shield and the tunnel of the base assembly. A primary light ray refractive member is positioned at a predetermined spaced location above the SOE.

  • Patent number: 8020777
Abstract: An Electronically-Controlled Register vent (ECRV) that can be easily installed by a homeowner or general handyman is disclosed. The ECRV can be used to convert a non-zoned HVAC system into a zoned system. The ECRV can also be used in connection with a conventional zoned HVAC system to provide additional control and additional zones not provided by the conventional zoned HVAC system. In one embodiment, the ECRV is configured to have a size and form-factor that conforms to a standard manually-controlled register vent. In one embodiment, a zone thermostat is configured to provide thermostat information to the ECRV. In one embodiment, the zone thermostat communicates with a central monitoring system that coordinates operation of the heating and cooling zones and provides heating and cooling to the various zones according to a cost budget.

  • Patent number: 8021332
Abstract: An agent delivery catheter which has a support member comprising at least one articulating arm having an end fixedly secured relative to the shaft and having an anchor end section opposite to the fixed end. The articulating arm is biased to pivot at the fixed end away from the shaft, to transform from a low profile configuration to a high profile configuration in which the arm extends laterally away from the shaft and the anchor end section contacts the patient's body lumen wall, to support the shaft in the body lumen during delivery of an agent, for example by injection from a needle extended from the catheter into the wall of the body lumen.

  • Patent number: 8016854
Abstract: A strut assembly to be used in conjunction with an embolic filtering device has varying strut thicknesses, with the thickness selected based at least in part on the flexing characteristics of the particular portion of the strut assembly. The strut assembly is formed with patterns having flexing portions and stable portions, with the flexing portions contributing to the flexibility of the strut assembly during delivery and recovery in the patient's vasculature. The stable portions remain relatively unflexed and stiff when being delivered or recovered from the patient's vasculature. The stable portions provide strength and increased radiopacity to the strut assembly which is needed when the strut assembly is deployed in the body vessel. The flexing portions act much like a mechanical hinges in providing the needed flexibility to resiliently bend when being delivered through tortuous anatomy of the patient.

  • Patent number: 8014902
Abstract: A system for load control in an electrical power system is described, wherein one or more temperature-monitoring devices are provided to control operation of a pool pump. When ambient temperatures are relatively high, and thus, electrical power demands from air conditioning systems are relatively high, the temperature-monitoring devices can remove power from the controlled device during the hottest portions of the day. The temperature-monitoring devices can provide power to the controlled devices during the cooler portions of the day. During heat waves or other periods of relatively continuous high heat, the temperature-monitoring devices can schedule power to the controlled devices to reduce overall power demands and to run the controlled devices during the cooler portions of the day when air conditioning electrical loads are reduced. The temperature-monitoring devices can also coordinate operation of the pool pump and a pool heater.

  • Patent number: RE42758
Abstract: The vasoocclusive apparatus can be used in a method of interventional therapy and vascular surgery by inserting the apparatus into a portion of a vasculature, for treatment of a body vessel such as an aneurysm in conjunction with a secondary vasoocclusive device to be placed within the vessel. The vasoocclusive Vasooclusive apparatus includes a plurality of strut members connected together at a central hub that extend from a collapsed position to an expanded configuration to cross the neck of the aneurysm, dividing the neck into smaller openings, allowing the deployment of the secondary vasoocclusive device within the aneurysm but preventing migration of the secondary vasoocclusive device from the aneurysm. The strut members can be made from a twisted cable of strands of a superelastic material, such as a shape memory nickel titanium alloy, with at least one radiopaque strand.
