  • Patent number: 7036367
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the flow velocity of a flowing fluid includes a positive temperature coefficient thermistor to be immersing within the flowing fluid in order to provide a measurement of the rate of heat dissipation of the thermistor produced by the flowing fluid, and thereby a measurement the flow velocity of the fluid. The positive temperature coefficient thermistor used has a resistance which increases sharply at the predetermined temperature at which electrical current is maintained in the thermistor such that the thermistor is self-controlled to maintain substantially the predetermined temperature, whereby the electrical current drawn by the thermistor is a measurement of the thermal load on the thermistor resulting from the thermal heat dissipation therefrom by the flowing fluid, and thereby a measurement of the flow velocity of the fluid.

  • Patent number: 6965831
Abstract: A novel coupled two-way clustering approach to gene microarray data analysis, for identifying subsets of the genes and samples, such that when one of these items is used to cluster the other, stable and significant partitions emerge. The method of the present invention preferably uses iterative clustering in order to execute this search in an efficient way. This approach is especially suitable for gene microarray data, where the contributions of a variety of biological mechanisms to the gene expression levels are entangled in a large body of experimental data. The method of the present invention was applied to two gene microarray data sets, on colon cancer and leukemia. By identifying relevant subsets of the data and focusing on these subsets, partitions and correlations were found that were masked and hidden when the full data set was used in the analysis.

  • Patent number: 6965732
Abstract: A method and heating device for heating a liquid, particularly useful for removing liquid condensate from cooling devices, by wetting a heating plate with the liquid and controlling the electrical power supply to maintain the heating plate at a the predetermined temperature above the boiling point of the liquid, such that when the heating plate is not wetted by the liquid, the electrical power supply to the heating plate is automatically maintained at a relatively low value, but as soon as the heating plate is wetted by the liquid, the electrical power supplied to the heating plate is automatically increased until the liquid is completely evaporated. The heating plate is heated by one or more PTC thermistors in which the electrical resistance increases with temperature to automatically maintain the predetermined temperature. Besides evaporating liquid condensate, the heating device is described for use in many other applications including steam generation, space heating and plastic molding.

  • Patent number: 6941727
Abstract: A method and a system of transporting a commodity includes the step of placing the commodity in a flexible hermetic container. The commodity is stored in the flexible hermetic container for at least a specific time period. The commodity is then moved from the flexible hermetic container to a shipping container having an insect barrier liner. The commodity is transported in the shipping container. The specific time period is a sufficient time period to kill substantially all of the insects that have infested the commodity prior to placement in the flexible hermetic container. In one embodiment, a vacuum is drawn on the flexible hermetic container to reduce the specific time period and an optional small amount of pesticide can be injected into the flexible hermetic container to which a vacuum has been applied to further reduce the specific time period. An inert gas is used to reduce the specific time period.

  • Patent number: 6939138
Abstract: A method and a system for simulating the minimally invasive medical procedure of urological endoscopy. The system is designed to simulate the actual medical procedure of urological endoscopy as closely as possible by providing botha simulated medical instrument, and tactile and visual feedback as the simulated procedure is performed on the simulated patient. Particularly preferred features include a multi-path solution for virtual navigation in a complex anatomy, the simulation of the effect of the beating heart on the urethra as it crosses the illiac vessel, and the simulated operation of a guidewire within the urethra In addition, the system and method optionally and more preferably incorporate the effect of dynamic contrast injection of dye into the urethra for fluoroscopy. The injection of such dye, and the subsequent visualization of the urological organ system in the presence of the endoscope, must be accurately simulated in terms of accurate visual feedback.
