Patent number: 4538771Abstract: In the manufacture of electrical coils (10), particularly large transformer coils, an insulated wire (11) is wound on a rotatable winding arbor (12) so as to form a succession of turns of the insulated wire. Particularly when large gauge enamelled copper wire is wound, the insulation (14) has a tendency to crack or chip during the winding process, causing shorted turns and producing a defective coil. This disclosure relates to systems for testing such a coil to detect a short as it is wound so as to permit interruption of the winding process and repair of the insulation fault on the spot. The test equipment includes a pair of test windings (41, 42) positioned at opposite ends of the winding arbor (12) and magnetically coupled by flux paths (50, 51) to each other and to the coil being wound so that an A.C. input signal (V.sub.1) applied to the first winding (41) induces an A.C. output signal (V.sub.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1983Date of Patent: September 3, 1985Assignee: AT&T Technologies, Inc.Inventor: John Tardy

Patent number: 4531277Abstract: Components such as lids (9) and electronic chip carriers (10) are assembled by registering respective mating faces of each component. An array of assembly stations (75) are formed on an upwardly extending edge (67) of a base (66) having a special inclination. For example, a lid (9) is supported with its mating face upturned and a carrier (10) is supported with its mating face downturned upon the upturned face of the lid (9) on the base (66). The inclination causes the components to slide relative to each other and the base in a given direction within each station (75). A plate (92) overlies a plate (72), supported on and inclined with the base (66). Plate (72) has an opening (74) and plate (92) has an overlying opening (94) to each station (75). The openings (74) and (94) have respective reference edges for stopping sliding of, and thereby positioning an upturned lid (9) and a downturned carrier ( 10) thereupon with a desired registration.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1984Date of Patent: July 30, 1985Assignee: AT&T Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Richard K. Patent number: 4529299Abstract: A spacer (52) of an interposer element (51) is placed between support surfaces (27) of a mounting chuck (12) in a projection printer (14) and a photomask (48) which is not protected by a coverplate. The interposer element (51) further features a transparent plate (53) which becomes interposed in the optical path (46) of the projection printer (14) in a position spaced from the photomask (48). The plate (53) shifts the objective focal plane (44) with respect to which the support surfaces (27) are adjusted outward away from an image plane by a distance equal to the shift of the objective focal plane due to the coverplate of a coverplate-protected photomask. Consequently, the spacer (52) features a preferred thickness of a coverplate of such coverplate-protected photomask to position patterns (21) of object features on the unprotected photomask (48) in the plane to which the focal plane is shifted by the interposed plate (53).Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1984Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: AT&T Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Edward L. Patent number: 4380734Abstract: The magnetic intensity in a succession of strips (12) in an article (10) is measured by producing relative motion between the article (10) and a magnetic sensing head (23) to produce a succession of first voltage waveforms. Each such waveform has a shape substantially characterized by the positions of the poles (13 and 14) in a respective strip (12). Each incremental portion of the shape has an amplitude proportional to the magnetic intensity sensed along the surface of the strip (12) and to the instantaneous speed of the relative motion between the sensing head (23) and such surface. By coupling a generator (31) to the article (10), a second voltage waveform is produced having a shape for each strip, wherein each incremental portion has an amplitude proportional to an instantaneous speed equivalent to the speed producing the first voltage waveform for the respective strip (12).Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1980Date of Patent: April 19, 1983Assignee: Western Electric Company, Inc.Inventor: George L. Patent number: 4307342Abstract: A surge protector is tested by injecting a current spike with an exponentially decaying waveshape (12) through the surge protector. The current is generated by connecting a voltage source (16) to the surge protector and controlling the current through the surge protector by a Darlington array amplifier (20) connected between the surge protector and ground. The Darlington array amplifier (20) is in turn controlled by first generating a reference pulse having a voltage waveform corresponding to the desired current waveform and comparing this reference voltage with a voltage feedback from the Darlington array amplifier (20) to in turn generate an error voltage which is coupled into the amplifier (20). Additionally, differential amplifier circuits (44 and 46) monitor the voltage impressed on the amplifier (20) and reduce the input voltage to the amplifier (20) significantly if the voltage impressed on the amplifier (20) is greater than a predetermined fraction of the voltage source (16).Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1979Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Western Electric Co., Inc.Inventor: Karl E.
