  • Patent number: 4762540
Abstract: Noise suppression and particle separation apparatus for flows of high pressure, high velocity, particle-laden, gaseous fluid, such as geothermal steam, comprises a gaseous fluid conduit that has axially installed around its discharge end a larger diameter, cylindrical inner expansion chamber having a number of flow-dividing fluid discharge openings at which fluid flow diffusing elements are connected for receiving and diffusing the flow of gaseous fluid from the apertures. A still-larger diameter, cylindrical noise suppression chamber is axially mounted around the inner chamber and flow diffusing elements. The diffusion elements increase the fluid flow noise frequency range and sound deadening material installed in the outer chamber absorbs noise in this higher frequency range so that the venting fluid noise level outside the apparatus is no more than about 95 dB.

  • Patent number: 4756888
Abstract: A method is disclosed for controlling the deposition of metal-containing scales, such as iron silicate scale, from a hot, aqueous, geothermal brine or the like, without substantial corrosion of brine handling equipment. The brine is contacted with (1) an amount of an acid sufficient to reduce the pH of the brine between 0.1 and 0.5 unit and (2) a greater than stoichiometric amount of a reducing agent for reducing trivalent iron and manganese cations in a high temperature brine solution to divalent ions. An overall decrease in scale deposition, especially of iron silicate scale, is achieved while a silver-rich scale can be recovered from silver-containing brines.

  • Patent number: 4755469
Abstract: A method for tagging an oil so that subsequently it may be identified as to source by incorporating into the oil as a tracer material an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible Group VIB, Group VIIB or lanthanum series rare earth metal salt of a fatty acid. The so-tagged oil may be utilized in any desired manner. Thereafter, an oil suspected to contain at least a portion of the so-tagged oil is analyzed for the presence of the added metal moiety. The method is especially useful in tracing a complex oleaginous and petroliferous material so that it may be recovered and identified following a theft or spill or to trace the flow of such oil injected through a subterranean reservoir.

  • Patent number: 4754438
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus for obtaining a step function response signal from a geophone, comprising: (1) a controllable source of current; (2) a means for producing a switching pulse; (3) an electronic connecting means for applying current from the source to the geophone, while the pulse is being produced; and (4) an electronic connecting means for conducting the response signal from the geophone to a data acquisition system, after the pulse has been produced. Preferably, a time delay means is used to delay the connecting of the signal to the data acquisition system, for a time after the pulse has been produced.

  • Patent number: 4752452
Abstract: The invention is a process and apparatus useful for preparing an aqueous ammonia solution at a temperature below the boiling point thereof by single stage dilution of anhydrous ammonia with water. In the invention, an anhydrous ammonia fluid comprising ammonia vapor is mixed with water to provide an aqueous ammonia fluid at a first temperature above the boiling point of said aqueous ammonia fluid, the aqueous ammonia fluid is cooled to a second temperature above the boiling point of said aqueous ammonia fluid, and the cooled aqueous ammonia fluid is then indirectly contacted with liquid anhydrous ammonia to further cool said aqueous ammonia fluid to a temperature below its boiling point and thereby heat the liquid anhydrous ammonia to vaporize at least a portion thereof. The heated anhydrous ammonia fluid is utilized in the process of this invention to provide the aqueous ammonia fluid.

  • Patent number: 4746222
Abstract: Apparatus for the mixing and cooling of hot, particulate matter, such as hot, retorted oil shale, comprises a plurality of enclosed, vertically spaced apart, converging vessels through which the material to be mixed and cooled is flowed. At least the lowermost vessel is configured for a packed bed flow of the material and has mounted therein, on a vertical drive shaft, a mixer blade assembly having a plurality of similar mixing blades which are upwardly inclined at an angle, A.sub.1, of between about 30.degree. and about 75.degree. and preferably within about .+-.15.degree. of the sidewall angle of the vessels. The blades are mounted so as to have an angle of attack, A.sub.2, relative to the rotational direction of travel, of between about 20.degree. and about 60.degree.. A constant angle of attack along each mixing blade is assured by making the angle, A.sub.3, between the blade leading edge and the blade base to be related to the blade inclination and attack angles in accordance with the relationship:A.sub.

  • Patent number: 4743669
Abstract: Certain urea-sulfuric acid components, comprised of urea and sulfuric acid in a 1/4 to 7/4 molar ratio, contain a monourea adduct of sulfuric acid, which is catalytically active for promoting organic chemical reactions. The invention provides methods employing such urea-sulfuric acid components for catalyzing organic reactions such as oxidation, oxidative addition, reduction, reductive addition, esterification, transesterification, hydrogenation, isomerization (including racemization of optical isomers), alkylation, polymerization, demetallization of organometallics, nitration, Friedel-Crafts reactions, and hydrolysis. Novel catalysts are disclosed which involve combinations of the urea-sulfuric component with one or more transition metal halides and/or with one or more surfactants. The surfactant-containing compositions are particularly useful for the treatment of materials containing lipophilic substances.

  • Patent number: 4701555
Abstract: The biuret content of biuret-containing urea is reduced by contacting a solution or melt of biuret-containing urea with a polar adsorbent under conditions sufficient to remove at least a portion of biuret from the urea. The resulting biuret-containing adsorbent can be regenerated for further use by contact with a polar desorbent under conditions sufficient to desorb at least a portion of the biuret contained on the adsorbent. Optionally, biuret can be recovered by recovering the biuret-containing desorbent, and biuret concentration in the desorbent can be increased by recycling the biuret-containing desorbent into contact with biuret-containing adsorbents, and biuret can be recovered from the desorbent by low temperature crystallization.
