  • Patent number: 6614826
Abstract: A laser system and method having an output laser beam uses an gain medium with one or more output beam transverse profile tailoring (OBTPT) longitudinal strips to tailor the transverse profile of the output laser beam to a desirable shape such as having a symmetrical profile transverse to the direction of propagation of the output laser beam. The laser system has two reflector systems on opposite ends in the long z-axis dimension of the gain medium to form a resonator that outputs the output laser beam following the same long z-axis dimension. In some embodiments the gain medium has a narrow y-axis dimension and a wide x-axis dimension. In these embodiments the OBTPT longitudinal strips have lengths running the long z-axis dimension, widths running the wide x-axis dimension and thicknesses running the narrow y-axis dimension of the gain medium. The widths of the OBTPT longitudinal strips are generally chosen with respect to coupling width of the output laser beam.

  • Patent number: 6612051
Abstract: A tool assembly using a fluid-powered actuator and including first and second tool members. The first tool member is pivotably connectable to a boom arm of a vehicle or stationary support platform for rotation about a first axis. The first tool member is also attached to a body of the actuator and the second tool members is attached to a shaft of the actuator so that operation of the actuator rotates the second tool member relative to the first tool member about a second axis spaced apart from the first axis and independent of rotation of the first tool member about the first axis. The second tool member is positioned to cooperatively engage the first tool member to assist in collection operations. The actuator has a generally cylindrical body with an output shaft rotatably disposed therein for rotation about the second axis.

  • Patent number: 6603794
Abstract: A system and method for laser beam coupling between waveguide optics uses extension members to reduce power losses in a laser beam traveling within a resonator cavity of the laser beam. In some embodiments, the extension members are made of electrically conducting material and are spaced from longitudinal ends of electrodes by electrically insulating material. The electrically insulating material is sized to prevent electrical discharge from occurring between the electrode and the extension member adjacent thereto. In other embodiments, the extension members are fashioned from a lasing medium such as from a solid-state crystal lasing medium.

  • Patent number: 6538549
Abstract: An advanced circuit breaker system and method includes first and second terminals to electrically couple the advanced circuit breaker to an electrical circuit. A cam applies a first torque to a rotatable contact arm, having an arm contact electrically coupled to the first terminal, from a first position to a second position of the contact arm and a second torque to the contact arm from the second position to a third position. A bimetal blade, having a blade contact electrically coupled to the second terminal, changes shape when electrical current flowing through it exceeds a threshold for at least a predetermined amount of time. The arm contact maintains contact with the blade contact when the first torque occurs and separates from the blade contact when the second torque occurs. The blade contact changes shape to increase separation from the arm contact if electrical current exceeds at least a certain amount above the threshold.

  • Patent number: 6433583
Abstract: The switch circuit receives a first supply voltage and a second supply voltage different from each other; a control input receiving a control signal that may be switched between the first supply voltage and ground; a driving inverter stage supplied by the second supply voltage and defining the output of the circuit; a feedback inverter stage supplied by the second supply voltage and including a top transistor and a bottom transistor defining an intermediate node and having respective control terminals. The control terminal of the top transistor is connected to the output node, the control terminal of the bottom transistor is connected to the control input, and the intermediate node is connected to the input of the driving inverter stage. An activation element helps switching of the intermediate node from the second supply voltage to ground; current limiting transistors are arranged in the inverter stages to limit the current flowing during switching and to reduce the consumption of the circuit.

  • Patent number: 6173319
Abstract: An improved method and system for initializing the logical units (LUs) in a Gateway between an SNA network having a mainframe host computer and another network. An activation procedure derives the Table of Boundary LUs on the mainframe host computer by noting the device logical unit numbers within the set of ‘Activate Logical Unit’ (ACTLU) SNA Request Units. If the mainframe host computer includes an LU in its Table of Boundary LUs, then the activation procedure creates a corresponding LU in the Gateway. The activation procedure also marks each of the created LUs in the Gateway as active. The newly created LUs are then added to the resource pool of LUs available to the network.

  • Patent number: 6158288
Abstract: An ultrasonic flowmeter using ultrasonic pulses transmitted within a pipe containing flowing fluid determines values, including flow rate or fluid velocity of the flowing fluid. The ultrasonic flowmeter transmits trains of ultrasonic pulses having velocity components either in the upstream or downstream direction. The ultrasonic flowmeter includes the transducer placed downstream external to the pipe and a transducer placed upstream external to the pipe. Time measurements are made to determine a time, T.sub.U, required for a pulse train to travel from the downstream transducer to the upstream transducer and the time, T.sub.D, required for a pulse train to travel from the upstream transducer to the downstream transducer. The ultrasonic flowmeter is configured to have consistent triggering of the pulses of the pulse train to reduce error. Also, the electronics are simplified to allow for lower timing resolution requirements. Once T.sub.U and T.sub.

  • Patent number: 6076011
Abstract: A system to monitor surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of a user and provide appropriate feedback to the user includes an EMG feedback monitor sized and configured to be worn by the user. In the depicted embodiment, surface EMG activity is measured with electrodes integrally affixed to a housing of the system. Feedback is typically provided using vibrations of certain duration and repetition. The system operates under various user selectable operational modes. Each operational mode is associated with particular electromyographic feedback criteria used to determine appropriate feedback for the user. The electromyographic feedback criteria is related to signal levels and time measurements associated with surface EMG activity level measured of the user. The depicted embodiment includes a computer interface allowing EMG signal data recorded by the EMG feedback monitor to be sent to a computer system.
