Patent number: 4399467Abstract: A data compression system which generates several types of symbols from bands of data derived from the digital image. Each group of data bits located in the same bit position across the data band is represented by a mode symbol, which signifies the decimal value of the binary combination of the data contained in that group. The mode symbol is followed by a run symbol, which represents the number of times or incremental positions that the same mode occurs successively until a different mode is generated. Mode and run symbols are transmitted in alternation, with each mode symbol followed by its corresponding run symbol, to an encoder, which generates variable length code words that are transmitted to a receiving station and decoded to provide symbols which are used to form a facsimile image. In one embodiment of this system, the mode and run symbols are combined to form a different type of symbol, known as a ternary octade symbol, to further improve the compression performance of the system.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1981Date of Patent: August 16, 1983Assignee: NCR Canada Ltd.Inventor: Ambati Subramaniam

Patent number: 4379222Abstract: A high speed shift register device includes first and second shift registers. Odd numbered bits of a word are stored in the first shift register and even numbered bits of the word are stored in the second shift register. The first shift register is clocked by a clock signal, and the second shift register is clocked by the complement of the clock signal. The outputs of the first and second shift registers are alternately shifted by means of a multiplexer to an output conductor. A control input of the multiplexer is connected to the clock input. Data is shifted out of the multiplexer at a rate which is twice the normal shifting rate of each of the first and second shift registers.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1980Date of Patent: April 5, 1983Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Alan B. Patent number: 4356944Abstract: A prescored ceramic substrate plate is broken along each of a plurality of parallel, uniformily-spaced transverse score lines scribed therein by moving the plate, scored side up, along a guide rail and over a break edge into the lower arc of a resilient break roller which is free to rotate. First and second idler rollers apply pressure to the remaining portion of the plate as the plate is being moved. The break roller is canted in the X-axis at a predetermined angle with respect to the break edge for applying a graduated downward pressure onto the plate against the break edge. This angled orientation of the break roller to the break edge sequentially causes the plate to fracture incrementally along each score line as that portion of the plate located at the previously adjacent score line moves into the break roller.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1981Date of Patent: November 2, 1982Assignee: Bourns, Inc.Inventor: Leslie L. Patent number: 4270652Abstract: There is provided for use with a conveyor, an unloading apparatus for automatically removing a stack of sheets from a succession of shelves or bins, as in a collator, and conveying it to a desired location. The unloading apparatus includes a gripper which is adapted to advance to grip the sheets as presented on a shelf and then retract to insert the stack of sheets onto a conveyor, e.g. a tape conveyor. The gripper includes a four-bar linkage whereby the upper one of its jaws is elevated from a position beneath the plane of travel of the stack of sheets into gripping relation with the stack by a spring biased over-center action. The gripper with the stack is moved linearly onto the conveyor which takes over from the gripper to continue the movement of the stack of sheets. At the delivery end of the gripper stroke, the four-bar linkage is actuated in an opposite direction, the stack released, and the upper jaw retracted out of the path of the stack.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1977Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Assignee: AM International, Inc.Inventors: Roger F. Patent number: 4188881Abstract: The description deals with a process of duplicating page order sheets designed to greatly augment the output of existing office duplicators by preparing masters each of which carries the image of two pages of data. The master is placed on the cylinder with the page lengths axially disposed and the page widths peripherally disposed, and prints on long sheets each of which carries two pages of data side by side, each being placed in successive pockets of a collator. The stack of printed sheets in each pocket is then placed in a paper stack cutter and cut into two stacks of standard sized sheets. The present invention relates to the discovery that a certain page order sequence of originals can be devised which will allow the whole process to proceed in an orderly routine manner, materially simplifying the procedure for the operator.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1977Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Assignee: AM International, Inc.Inventor: Edwin C. Patent number: 4181078Abstract: There is provided an improved automatic recirculating duplicator adapted for duplicating from a master or plate selectively onto one or both sides of paper sheets. It is characterized by a single printing couple. Sheets are fed from a paper table to a printing nip between a printing cylinder and an impression cylinder for printing on the first side and, through operation of a controlled gripping and stripping apparatus, the sheets are turned about the impression cylinder for collection with the printed sides down on a paper tray. The paper tray is then shifted to the feeding location normally occupied by the paper table, and the gripping and stripping apparatus is reset for feeding the sheets, now printed on both sides, directly to an exterior receiver.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1977Date of Patent: January 1, 1980Assignee: AM International, Inc.Inventor: William A. Patent number: 4168092Abstract: The device shown is a dual purpose unloader for the sheet holder bins of a paper distribution system, such as a collator. The bins of a collator are sometimes sloped to allow gravitational settling of the sheets as they are fed into the pockets. The illustrated unloader is an elongated open channel with an internal slidable rod. One set of grippers is mounted on the open channel and another set of grippers on the rod. A spring urges the two sets to move into a gripper closed position, and manual handles provide a means for opening the set of grippers. A mounting frame is available for guiding the unloader into proper registration with the collator pockets if manual placement is not convenient or desired.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1977Date of Patent: September 18, 1979Assignee: AM International, Inc.Inventor: Gerhard A.
