  • Patent number: 5933519
Abstract: The invention detects areas of interest at low magnification, locating possible abnormal cells or other cells of interest using image processing and statistical pattern recognition techniques. Next, at high magnification, the areas identified at low magnification are re-examined. The information from the low magnification and high magnification scans is collated and a determination is made about the slide--whether it is normal, abnormal, contains endocervical component, and so forth. The invention also provides a method and apparatus to train object feature and slide feature classifiers. The invention provides an automated cytology system that can process training slides for use in a feed back classifier development environment. The invention also can classify endocervical groups of cells.

  • Patent number: 5914459
Abstract: A discriminating deceleration sensing electrical switch assembly is enclosed within a munitions projectile for providing an electrical circuit path between a pair of electrical contacts upon deceleration of the projectile being greater than a selected deceleration threshold value. The discriminating deceleration electrical switch assembly includes a switch support having a bore hole for holding a spherical mass or ball. A tactile dome switch or snap switch is juxtaposed between an electrical contact assembly, including a pair of electrically conductive surface regions, and the spherical mass. The components are arranged along the munitions firing axis such that, upon sufficient deceleration along the firing axis, a force acting on the spherical mass will cause the dome switch to deform and contact the conductive surface regions to provide switch closure.

  • Patent number: 5821449
Abstract: A hollow grain propellant for use in a lightweight training round. The hollow grain propellant incorporates multi-perforation propellant grain geometry. The hollow grain propellant is configured as a propellant grain having a center hole surrounded by uniform perforations. The center hole is larger than any one of the uniform perforations. The placement of the uniform perforations forms webs of equal length. The hollow grain propellant may include seven or more perforations. The perforations are arranged in a single ring around the center hole. The size of the center hole may be controlled to produce a wide range of bulk densities. The number of perforations may be dependant on the size of the center hole. The number of perforations may be controlled to vary with the size of the center hole to provide for a desired bulk density. The large center hole improves flame permeability through a propellant bed by increasing the porosity of the propellent bed and increasing grain diameter.

  • Patent number: 5703835
Abstract: A security system for detecting a gunshot event. A communication link, and a number of pole units are arranged in a dense grid. Each one of the pole units includes a microphone and a signal conditioning and thresholding unit coupled to the microphone. The signal conditioning and thresholding unit outputs a detection signal in response to an event when an output signal from the microphone exceeds a peak background average. A data acquisition and signal processing unit is coupled to the signal conditioning and thresholding unit for discriminating gunshot events. The data acquisition and signal processing unit remains in a powered down stand-by mode so as to conserve energy until a detection signal is received. The data acquisition and signal processing unit includes apparatus for identifying a gunshot event by measuring an initial pulse time duration and subsequent pulse pattern features, and a communication interface coupled at an input to the data acquisition and signal processing unit.

  • Patent number: 5574458
Abstract: Automatic countermeasures dispensing module controller for radio frequency countermeasures processes information generated by a missile approach detector and radio frequency receivers which is correlated to generate a radio frequency countermeasures dispensing command. A countermeasures module is connected to provide effective countermeasures against radio frequency guided missiles. Voice warning messages are generated and a threat display symbol is generated on a cockpit display system that provides an audio and visual monitor of the threat. The number of countermeasures employed is counted. If a radar warning receiver or pulsed radar jammer is in operation and a missile approaching event is detected, the region of missile approach is read from a missile approach detector. The missile threat is displayed and correlated with the radar warning receiver or pulsed radar jammer for the indicated region with a missile approach detector.

  • Patent number: 5549477
Abstract: An in-flight simulator for an integrated aircraft survivability equipment system controlling radar warning receiver and a radar jammer with countermeasures control provides a training module which emulates the existence of airborne threats. The airborne threats are provided in real time as if they were detected by a threat detection system such as a radar warning receiver or a radar jammer. A list of threats is provided for either a radar warning receiver or pulse radar jammer, a continuous radar jammer, an RF/IR missile approach detector or a laser that threat on a display, includes that threat in a candidate list and executes various threat proximity algorithms with the candidate list. The invention determines whether the threat is within the range hidden by terrain or beyond the horizon. The threat simulator performs aircraft survivability equipment sensor model simulation. Threats are also prioritized.

  • Patent number: 5224064
Abstract: Transcendental function approximation using a regional approximation look-up table, offset lookup table, scaling shifter and interpolation adder/subtractor. Rapid fixed-point arithmetic calculations can be accomplished which approximate values of transcendental functions to a predetermined accuracy. An N bit argument is used to produce an N bit result allowing the placement of the radix point in the two numbers to be different. Different parts of the input argument are fed in parallel to the regional approximation look-up table and the offset lookup table. A scaling shifter converts the output of the offset lookup table and regional lookup table to a result usable by the interpolation adder/subtractor processor. The regional approximation lookup table also provides information to the interpolation processor which provides the N bit approximation.

  • Patent number: 5184082
Abstract: Apparatus and an associated method are described for testing liquid crystal matrix displays that can be performed prior to the assembly of the display. This display procedure involves applying of square wave signal to the control elements and a sine wave signal to the input terminal of an active element associated with the pixel under test. By selection of the sine wave signal frequency, the modulation products resulting from the combination of the square wave signals and the sine wave signal fall between the components resulting from the application of the square wave signal alone. As a result of the symmetry of the modulation components, a comb filter can be used to select the modulation components. The power of the transmitted modulation products provides a figure of merit for the active element associated with the pixel.
