    Abstract: There is disclosed a triazine-phenol-aldehyde condensate which contains at least 15% of nitrogen, has a melt viscosity of not greater than 2,000 cps at 175° C. and a solubility of at least 80% by weight at 25° C. by the 90:10 methanol:water method. Also disclosed are methods for the manufacture of the condensate as well as its use in fire-retardant epoxy resin compositions suitable for the manufacture of laminates for electronic applications. Additionally, disclosed is a composition comprising a physical mixture of a triazine-phenol-aldehyde condensate with benzoguanamine and/or acetoguanamine wherein the mixture contains from about 0.5% to 20% of benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine and mixtures thereof based on the weight of the condensate. There is also disclosed a glycidylated triazine-phenol-aldehyde condensate of this invention.

    Abstract: The specification discloses a binder composition comprising a urea formaldehyde resin modified with a water soluble non-ionic amine oxide and optionally further modified with an anionic acrylic latex and/or a water soluble polymer comprising 40-100% by weight, based on polymer weight, of a polymerized ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, the polymer having a weight average molecular weight from 100,000 to 2,000,000. Glass fiber mats bonded with the binder composition as well as roofing products, e.g., shingles, prepared from the glass mats bonded with the binder composition of this invention are also disclosed. The binder composition containing the amine oxide provides superior tear strength to glass fiber mats and with the use of the latex and/or water soluble polymer an improved tensile strength of the mats, as well as to asphalt roofing and other products made therefrom while maintaining the high tear strength.

The glyoxal is added continuously or by stepwise additions to the phenol so as to keep the aldehyde units in the reaction mixture to less than about 70% of the aldehyde units in the total quantity of glyoxal to be charged for making the polyphenol. Water is distilled stepwise or continuously from the reaction mixture.

    Abstract: Discloses compositions of urea dissolved in aqueous, polymerizable phenolic resole resins, wood-product laminated composite products produced with such resins, with or without the urea, and methods for the production of wood-product laminated composites with such resins. The resins contain the alkaline polymerization product of (a) formaldehyde polymerized with phenol and aliphatic hydrocarbylphenol or (b) aliphatic hydrocarbylphenol dissolved in the resin containing the polymerization product of phenol and formaldehyde, wherein the hydrocarbylphenol has from 9 to 17 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl group and the quantity of hydrocarbylphenol is from about 0.2% to 5% based on the weight of the aqueous resole resin. Wood-product laminate composites bound with the above resole resin, after curing, exhibit unexpectedly low water absorption, good internal bond strength and reduced thickness swell properties.

    Abstract: A curable, alkaline, melamine modified phenol-formaldehyde resin is prepared from an initial phenol-formaldehyde resole resin containing from 0.5 to 2.5 percent of free formaldehyde by scavenging formaldehyde with 1 to 12 parts of melamine for each 100 parts of the initial resin wherein the molar ratio of formaldehyde to melamine is 0.2 to 1.5 moles of formaldehyde for each mole of melamine to reduce the free formaldehyde to less than 70% of that in the initial resin and prepare a storage stable resin which contains less than 0.7% of free formaldehyde and which maintains its stability under application conditions. An ammonium salt of strong acid and additional water is incorporated in the melamine modified resin to prepare an alkaline binder. The binder is sprayed on to fiberglass with low formaldehyde emissions, good stability and rapid cure in the acid range.

    Abstract: An applicator of resilient plastic material having a double wall construction, an air chamber between the walls and spacers in the air chamber is disclosed. The applicator is adapted to be pressed between the thumb and forefinger to dispense glue. The applicator has an applicator body comprising a shoulder, a dispensing opening in the shoulder and a downwardly depending skirt. A cup which is adapted to hold glue, particularly cyanoacrylate glue, is within the skirt and the top and bottom portions of the cup are in fluid tight engagement with the applicator body adjacent the top and bottom of the skirt. The cup fits within the skirt with its walls in spaced apart relationship with the skirt to provide an air chamber therebetween. The shape of cup walls and the opposed skirt generally conform to each other. A preferred embodiment includes friction elements on the outside of the skirt overlying at least a portion of the area covered by the spacers.

Various compounds such as: carboxylic acid amides, urea, dicyandiamide, N-methylolated amides, N-alkyl 2-pyrrolidinones having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, those having an internal epoxide group, alkanols, and Schiff bases retard the ambient temperature hardening of the resin with the aryl phosphite hardening agents.

    Abstract: A water based thixotropic adhesive gel is disclosed which consists essentially of: water; partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol, or wherein a portion of the polyvinyl alcohol is replaced with polyvinylpyrrolidone; a water-soluble high viscosity thickening agent polymer which is compatible with the polyvinyl alcohol and which imparts thixotropic properties to the gel; a water-soluble plasticizer for the polyvinyl alcohol; and a watersoluble defoamer in proportion of ingredients so that the viscosity of the adhesive will break down when a flexible tube or squeeze bottle dispenser is finger-pressed and have a sufficiently low viscosity to allow for easy extrusion from an orifice having a diameter of about 0.06 to 0.15 inches. When pressure is released, after the desired amount of adhesive has flown out of the dispenser, the adhesive quickly reverts to very close to its original gel state so that it will not run on a vertical surface on porous and semiporous surfaces such as paper.
