Abstract: The present invention provides for an apparatus and a method for monitoring, in vivo, the ruminal pH of an animal. The apparatus has an external aspect at the outside of the animal, an indwelling ruminal aspect; and an intermediate aspect between the external and indwelling aspects. The indwelling aspect further has a pH sensor; and the external aspect further having a housing and a means for storing data from the pH sensor in said housing. The apparatus may further comprise a means for transmitting signals corresponding to the pH data collected and a means for receiving said signals. The method of monitoring, in vivo, the pH of the rumen of an animal includes installing any of the embodiments of the apparatus to the animal and taking a plurality of measurements of the pH from the apparatus, and transmitting signals corresponding to said measurements to a receiving device.

  • Patent number: 6605594
Abstract: Aqueous somatotropin compositions are presented that contain less than about 10% of a biologically active somatotropin, water, and glycerol in an amount effective and at a pH effective to maintain the somatotropin substantially completely stable. The somatotropins in such compositions preferably retain their physical and chemical stability for at least 2 years. The somatotropin compositions also preferably have anti-microbial activity, such that, after they have been sterile-filtered, no additional anti-microbial agent is necessary to maintain the sterility of the composition.

  • Patent number: 6307013
Abstract: Protein suspensions comprising soluble and insoluble components are purified via flocculation with anionic polymers, such as polyacrylamides, potato starch, or modified cellulose. The procedure improves the efficiency of solid/liquid separations and can minimize or eliminate the requirement for centrifugation and/or filtration in large scale biotechnological processes. The method is particularly well suited for the purification and clarification of protein suspensions containing soluble somatotropin monomer using polyacrylamide and polysaccharide flocculants.

  • Patent number: 6218145
Abstract: A composition for expression of a protein-encoding gene in a host cell is described, making use of an heterologous regulon. This composition provides a protein-encoding gene under control of a promoter heterologous to the host cell, and a gene for an RNA polymerase, preferably a single-subunit RNA polymerase that recognizes the promoter heterologous to the host cell. The gene for the RNA polymerase is under control of an inducible promoter recognized by the host cell. Also disclosed is a method for expressing the protein-encoding gene using the composition described.

  • Patent number: 5374523
Abstract: An assay for determining the presence in bovine genetic material of a genetic marker located on the bovine somatotropin gene indicative of an inheritable trait of increased milk production is provided. The marker is a polymorphism in the gene encoding somatotropin at amino acid position 126 which results in two forms of somatotropin existing in bovine. The assay comprises analyzing a bovine to determine its genotype with respect to the somatotropin gene. Bovine with the desired marker can be selected for inclusion in breeding programs or for milking. The desired marker indicative of superior milk production is dependent upon the breed of cattle. Holstein cattle that are homozygous for the leucine forms of somatotropin are desired. Jersey cattle that are homozygous for the valine form of somatotropin are desired. A kit for performing the assay is also provided.
