  • Patent number: 5257664
Abstract: A method and composition for controlling the profile of a formation where temperatures higher than 400.degree. F. are encountered. An aqueous solution of an organoammonium silicate, alkali metal or ammonium silicate is injected into a zone of higher permeability in a formation. Subsequently, a spacer volume of a water-immiscible organic solvent is directed into said zone. Afterwards, a water-miscible organic solvent containing an alkylpolysilicate and an inorganic salt or a chelated calcium compound are injected into the higher permeability zone. A silicate cement is formed in-situ thereby substantially closing the higher permeability zone to fluid flow. Thereafter, a steam-flooding, water-flooding, carbon dioxide-flooding, or fire-flooding EOR operation is commenced in a lower permeability zone.

  • Patent number: 5248547
Abstract: The present invention relates to novel multi-layer coextruded thermoplastic stretch wrap films useful for the packaging or palletizing of goods. More particularly the films of this invention comprise at least three layers having two outer layers and at least one intermediate layer placed between the outer layers. The intermediate layer is formed from a high pressure low density polyethylene resin and the outer layers are formed from a linear low density polyethylene copolymer such as ethylene copolymerized with a minor amount of at least one C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 alpha-olefin, such as hexene-1, octene-1, decene-1, 4-methyl-pentene-1 and butene-1. The force required to stretch the novel films of this invention may be controlled by the thickness of the intermediate layer relative to overall film thickness, the melt index of the intermediate layer resin, the molecular weight of the intermediate layer resin or a combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 5244936
Abstract: An aqueous polymeric gel-forming composition capable of selectively plugging highly permeable zones in subterranean oil-bearing formations. The composition comprises an aqueous solution of an anionic acrylamide copolymer of high molecular weight, comprising about 5 to 95 weight percent of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, about 2 to 95 weight percent of N-vinyl-N-methyl acetamide and about 5 to 93 weight percent of acrylamide, and a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of transition metal ions, phenolic resins and amino resins. The compositions of this invention will form stable gels in brines of wide-ranging salinity and are effective at the pH levels encountered in carbon dioxide and water flooding operations. Also provided is a process for selectively plugging regions of higher permeability within an oil-bearing formation to improve sweep efficiency during a fluid flood oil recovery operation.

  • Patent number: 5240075
Abstract: A method and apparatus for treating steam which is to be injected into a formation through a gravel pack well completion by preventing dissolution and removal of silica from the gravel pack. The steam is flowed through a treatment vessel which is filled with a silica-containing material, e.g. sand, where it dissolves silica from the sand prior to injection through the gravel pack. Since the treated steam is already substantially saturated with silica, it will not dissolve any substantial amounts of silica from the gravel pack. The treatment vessel can also be heated during treatment, if desired.

  • Patent number: 5238067
Abstract: This invention is directed to a method to improve fracture acidizing in a carbonate containing formation. Initially, the formation is hydraulically fractured so as to form a fracture in the formation in a preferred direction. Thereafter, an acid is directed into the fracture so as to etch the fracture's face and create channels therein. Afterwards, a viscous fluid is directed into the fracture which fluid contains a material sufficient to serve as a diverter and prevent growth in the existing fracture. Once the diverting material is in place, hydraulic fracturing is again conducted within the existing fracture whereupon fracturing forces are directed away from the diverter so as to form a branched fracture to contact hydrocarbonaceous vugs in the formation. The steps of fracturing acidizing, and diverting are continued until a vuggy area in the formation has been interconnected with the fracture system.

  • Patent number: 5237538
Abstract: A space time gate is selected surrounding a coherent noise to be removed from an array of seismic traces. Signal-plus-noise within the selected gate is extracted from the array of seismic traces. Coherent noise within the gated signal-plus-noise is estimated and subtracted from such gated signal-plus-noise to provide a signal estimate. This signal estimate is restored into the array of seismic traces.

  • Patent number: 5211230
Abstract: A horizontal production well is located in the lower portion of a heavy viscous oil-bearing reservoir. A vertical injection well is located in the upper portion of the reservoir. Oxygen-enriched gas is injected down the injector well and ignited in the upper portion of the reservoir to create a combustion zone that reduces viscosity of oil in the reservoir as the combustion zone advances downwardly toward the horizontal production well, the reduced-viscosity oil draining into the horizontal production well under force of gravity.
