  • Patent number: 6540353
Abstract: An aspheric multifocal contact lens for wearing by a patient with presbyopia is disclosed. The lens has a lens body with a rear surface adapted to fit on the surface of the eye and a front surface that interacts with the rear surface to bring about the desired optics of the lens. The lens also has a centrally located and generally circular first optic zone providing a first power correction for near vision, and a second optic zone concentric with the first optic zone and located peripherally therefrom providing a second power correction for distance vision. A transition zone concentric with the first optic zone is located between said first and second optic zones. The transition zone provides a rapid power shift of about 0.8 to about 1.6 diopters over a distance of about 0.25 mm between the power correction of the first and second zones.

  • Patent number: 6520722
Abstract: Disclosed is a cutting tool with an asymmetric tooth form, and a method for making the same. Such tooth forms are useful for cutting tools such as band saw blades, circular saws, hacksaws and other saw type products. The tooth form of this invention can improve precision over prior art tooth forms by reducing manufacturing variability. The improved precision provides more consistent performance and a better quality of the cut surface. The non-symmetrical form ground tooth profiles cut designated chip profiles and thereby cut specific portions of the kerf much like a broaching application. This non-symmetrical ground tooth profile can alter the distribution of the downfeed cutting force allowing for more aggressive cutting or conversely, cutting at the desired rate with less downfeed pressure.

  • Patent number: 6515383
Abstract: A device and method for substantially enhancing the cooling of electric machines, e.g., motors and generators, is described. A hermetically-sealed chamber surrounds electric wire winding end-turns at either end of the stator core, and contains at least one phase-change coolant. The coolant removes heat from the stator winding through the end-turns, where often temperatures are the greatest, through cyclical ebullition, whereby heat generated by the stator winding end-turns boils and, subsequently, vaporizes the liquid coolant. The hot, vaporized coolant is removed through at least one vapor return passage and collects, cools, and condenses on the stator cooling jacket, which removes heat from the vaporized coolant. The liquid condensate precipitates into a wicking matrix, which continuously returns the liquid condensate through capillarity to the liquid coolant pool that partially wets the wicking matrix and winding end-turns.

  • Patent number: 6504522
Abstract: An active-matrix-type image display device having a gray-scale power supply for generating gray-scale voltages of different levels, and a source driver that applies gray-scale voltages according to a digital picture signal to source lines and includes one scanning circuit for each source line. The outputs of the scanning circuits are sequentially made active once in a horizontal period. A latch circuit fetches the digital picture signal in synchronization with making the output of the scanning circuit active. The digital picture signal is decoded by a decoder circuit, and one of analog switches becomes a conducting state according to the decoded signal. As a result, one of the gray-scale voltages is output to the source line.

  • Patent number: 6498713
Abstract: A low-voltage, low-inductance device for storing electrical charge in a snubber circuit and a method of minimizing inductance in the snubber circuit using the device, wherein the device includes a plurality of extended electrodes, in parallel or series, that are joined to a positive conductor terminal at one end spray and at a negative conductor terminal at the other end spray so that end sprays of adjacent extended electrodes are alternately joined to the positive and negative conductor terminals. Accordingly, current flowing though adjacent extended electrodes is of substantially equal intensity but different in direction. As a result, inductance produced effectively cancels out that of adjacent extended electrodes.

  • Patent number: 6411065
Abstract: An integrated system for comprehensive control of an electric power generation system utilizes state machine control having particularly defined control states and permitted control state transitions. In this way, accurate, dependable and safe control of the electric power generation system is provided. Several of these control states may be utilized in conjunction with a utility outage ride-through technique that compensates for a utility outage by predictably controlling the system to bring the system off-line and to bring the system back on-line when the utility returns. Furthermore, a line synchronization technique synchronizes the generated power with the power on the grid when coming back on-line. The line synchronization technique limits the rate of synchronization to permit undesired transient voltages.
