Patent number: 5151183Abstract: The instant invention is a membrane useful for separating organic matter such as proteins from aqueous solutions which resists fouling and maintains a high flux during separation. The membrane is prepared by either drying a polysulfone composite membrane, or first treating a polysulfone composite membrane with aqueous methanol and then drying it. The membrane is then exposed to elemental fluorine in an inert gas in the substantial absence of oxygen at a temperature in the range of about -45.degree. to 70.degree. C. After fluorine treatment, the membrane is exposed to air. The fluorine content in the treatment mixture may be from 0.0125 to about 10 volume percent, preferably 0.025 to 2 volume percent. The fluorine treatment does not significantly alter the membrane pore size.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1991Date of Patent: September 29, 1992Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventors: Robert H. Patent number: 5013448Abstract: Semipermeable membranes comprising polyesters which are resistant to chlorine are prepared by casting on a porous support backing material either a solution comprising a blend of a polymeric hydroxyalkyl acrylate and a polymeric monocarboxylic acid, or a polymeric polycarboxylic acid, or a solution containing a prepolymer which has been formed by the reaction of a polymeric hydroxyalkyl acrylate with an acryloyl halide or an anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid. Patent number: 4995956Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus of controlling a raw salt stream to be treated in an electrodialytical water splitter. An aqueous salt feed stream is fed to an electrodialysis water splitter and a dilute salt stream is withdrawn from the water splitter. The dilute salt stream is fed to an electrodialysis unit comprising a concentration compartment and a diluting compartment, at least part of the dilute salt stream being fed to the concentration compartment. An electrodialysis product stream is withdrawn from the concentration compartment. The product stream and the raw salt stream are controllably combined to form the aqueous feed stream. Patent number: 4983291Abstract: High flux semipermeable membranes which comprises the polymerized reaction product within and/or on a porous support backing material may be prepared by contacting the porous support such as a polysulfone with an aqueous solution of a polyamine which may, if so desired, contain a polar aprotic solvent not reactive with the amines, a polyhydric compound and an acid acceptor. The surface of the coated support is freed of excess solution and thereafter contacted with an organic solution of a polyacyl halide for a period of time sufficient to form a polymerized reaction product within and/or on the support material. The resulting composite is then treated with a hydroxy polycarboxylic acid, polyaminoalkylene polycarboxylic acid, suffonic acid, amine salts of acids, amino acid, amino acid salt, polymeric acid and inorganic acid, before drying of the membrane. This will enable the membrane to be stored in a dry manner prior to use thereof in a separation process.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1989Date of Patent: January 8, 1991Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventors: Michael M.
