Patent number: 6321017Abstract: A bend limiter/strain reliever is provided for maintaining optical fiber bend limits at exit portals of a optic fiber closure for the closure's entire range of motion, from being fully closed to being fully open. Bend limits are maintained as optical fiber is directed on paths through a closure exit portal between the closure interior and wire brackets on the closure exterior. Fibers are retained, organized and strain relieved by the bend limiter/strain reliever such that directed fiber is maintain at a minimum bend radius on such fiber paths. The curved surface of the bend limiter/strain reliever allows the closure to be accessed without excessive bending of so routed optical fibers. In this manner, optical signal degradation and/or total loss is avoided by limiting the bending of routed optical fiber to radii in excess of a predetermined minimum bend radius.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1999Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Neal Anthony Janus, Anthony Pellegrino, Randy Alan Reagan, Elwood Horace Green, Jr.

Patent number: 6317535Abstract: A system and method for testing the integrity of a pair of optical fibers that are received by a specific customer facility through the optical fiber network of a telecommunications provider. In one embodiment, the system contains a monitor and test access module including a wavelength division multiplexer for each pair of optical fibers that lead to a customer facility and an optical tap and monitoring circuit for monitoring the optical signal transmitted from the customer facility. Monitoring of the optical signal generated from the customer location gives an indication of the general quality of the fiber optic connection. A remote fiber test system that includes an optical time domain reflectometer can be coupled through the monitor and test access module. The optical fibers can be tested one at a time, or the two optical fibers leading to the same customer facility can be looped together and tested at the same time.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1999Date of Patent: November 13, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Mark Richard Jennings, Frank Salvatore Leone, Richard Joseph Pimpinella

Patent number: 6304694Abstract: A method and assembly for optically connecting a first grouping of optical fibers with a second grouping of optical fibers. To form the optical connection, the optical fibers in the first grouping and the second grouping are set into two separate arrays. A plurality of collimating elements are positioned proximate both arrays. The collimating elements correspond in both number and orientation to the optical fibers. As a result, any light signal emanating from either the first array or the second array will pass through a collimating element and will become substantially collimated. The first array and the second array are oriented with respect to one another so that each collimated element is at least partially aligned with a collimating element from the opposing array. Accordingly, light emitted from one fiber element in one array will be focused on an optical element in the opposing array without the optical fibers being precisely aligned.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1998Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Joseph Earl Ford

Patent number: 6301563Abstract: A system and method that determines risk exposure for a selected site by using adjacency analysis to identify and process sites that may not be visible to the user on a display unit. The system determines the risk exposure for a selected site by using geographical adjacency to evaluate other sites for potential impact. The system geographically stores hazard sites and sensitive receptor sites. Moreover, the system creates and stores a sphere of influence and a sphere of receptivity for each hazard site and sensitive receptor site, respectively. For the selected site, the system calculates a sphere of evaluation based on a geographical location of the selected site and a given radial extent. The system determines if the sphere of influence or the sphere of receptivity intersects the sphere of evaluation and outputs the results of the intersection analysis to the display unit.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1998Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Assignee: The Chubb CorporationInventors: Randall E. Patent number: 6285293Abstract: A patch cord tracing system and method for tracing patch cords in a telecommunications patching system. The system includes a plurality of tracing interface modules that attach to the patch panels in a telecommunications closet. On the patch panels in a telecommunications closet are located a plurality of connector ports that receive the terminated ends of patch cords. The tracing interface modules mount to the patch panels and provide a sensor, an LED and a tracing button to each of the connector ports. The sensor detects whenever a patch cord is connected to, or removed from, a connector port. Accordingly, by connecting a computer controller to the various sensors, the computer controller can monitor and log all changes to the patch cord interconnections in an automated fashion.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1999Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Avaya Technology Corp.Inventors: Michael Gregory German, Frank S. Patent number: 6285664Abstract: A method and system that minimizes pilot signal overlap and radio frequency (“RF”) interference by estimating changes in pilot coverage for different traffic channel loading and power conditions. Once base stations are positioned, a terminal for measuring received pilot signal strengths, such as a mobile station or pilot scanner, is used to collect and generate the baseline pilot survey data, which is then stored on a disk or tape. Base station transmit pilot EC/IOs, i.e., traffic channel loads on forward links, are also stored on disk or tape. The invention uses two adjustment factors associated with transmit power and traffic channel loading to optimize for different RF conditions, specifically for different base station transmit power or forward link loading conditions. For each RF condition, the methodology calculates the changes in the baseline pilot survey data. This reflects what EC/IOs a mobile station would receive under the given conditions.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1998Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Neil E. Bernstein, Xiao Cheng Wu

Patent number: 6263136Abstract: The present invention is an intelligent optical transmitter module that is used to produce optical test signals. The optical transmitter module contains a solid state laser and a microprocessor. The solid state laser produces the test signals which are used to test optical fibers in an optical fiber network. The laser is both monitored by and controlled by the microprocessor. In one embodiment, backface monitoring and optical output coupling power monitoring (using an optical tap) are accomplished within the module in order to more accurately reflect the state of the laser. The microprocessor reads data regarding the performance of the solid state laser which may be output to another control device. The control device utilizes the data from the microprocessor in the analysis of fiber optic loop conditions as well as the laser itself. The microprocessor enables the output levels of the solid state laser to be adjustable by way of a digital to analog converter.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: Lucent TechnologiesInventors: Mark Richard Jennings, Frank Salvatore Leone, Richard Joseph Pimpinella
